The proposed energy management system is used to develop a `novel deal' method in short stay accommodation based on integration of the room level energy costs into the billing system. This system has the potential to increase energy efficiency in the short stay accommodation industry by actively engaging the residents in the energy saving process. The system is economically and environmentally sustainable and can achieve a high level of energy efficiency with low expenses. The proposed model is also effective for carbon mitigation, and offers a value proposition for all the parties in the short stay accommodation industry, including owners and residents. The paper presents a software system to capture room level energy consumption information and to present the detail of consumed energy information in the resident's accommodation bill. The presented information includes energy consumption profile, the greenhouse gas emission profile, and the cost associated to the energy related services.","PeriodicalId":268687,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129590178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modeling the dynamical behavior of a large population of appliances is especially important to evaluate the effectiveness of various load control strategies. In this paper, a high accuracy aggregated model is first developed for a population of HVAC units. The model efficiently includes statistical information of the population, systematically deals with heterogeneity, and accounts for a second-order effect necessary to accurately capture the transient dynamics in the collective response. Furthermore, the model takes into account the lockout effect of the compressor in order to represent the dynamics of the system under control more accurately. Then, a novel closed loop load control strategy is designed to track a desired demand curve and to ensure a stable and smooth response.","PeriodicalId":268687,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"11 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126691980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method is to design a brain like control and coordination architecture using optimal control that are modular. Then an intelligent agent knowledge base is developed that can interact with each of the intelligent controllers and optimization algorithms on each bus in the power system providing multi-level and multi-objective capabilities. Such a robust intelligent coordinated controllers with fully functional and fault tolerant Multi-Agent Methodology (MAM) architecture are the important back-bone of next generation smart grid. The main advantage of such a design is its ability to make smart and intelligent control decisions in the presence of drastic system nonlinear movement.","PeriodicalId":268687,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"157 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132997808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We are particularly interested in the case when a significant portion of the power generated in the grid is from wind and other intermittent renewable energy sources. In this regard, we formulate a stochastic programming framework to choose optimal energy and reserve bids for the storage units. Our design takes into account the fluctuating nature of the market prices due to the randomness in the renewable power generation availability. We show that the formulated stochastic program can be converted into a convex optimization problem and therefore it can be solved efficiently. Our simulation results show that our design can assure profitability of the private investment on storage units. In particular, our design results in much higher profit compared to a similar but deterministic design that simply uses the expected values of the price parameters.","PeriodicalId":268687,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"197 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133524040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To test methods proposed for wind power grid integration, a large amount of wind data with time series are necessary and will be helpful to improve the methods. Meanwhile, due to the short operation history of most wind farms as well as limitations of data collections, the data obtained from wind farms could not satisfy the needs of data analysis. Consequently, synthetic generation of wind data series could be one of the effective solutions for this issue. In this paper, a method is presented for generating wind data series using Markov chain. Due to the high order Markov chain, the possibility matrix designed for a wind farm could cost a lot of memory, which is a problem with current computer technologies. Dynamic list will be introduced in this paper to reduce the memory required. Communication errors are un-avoidable on long way signal transmission between the control centre and wind farms. Missing of data always happens in the historical wind data series. Using these data to generate wind data series may result in some mistakes when searching related elements in the probability matrix. An adaptive method will be applied in this paper to solve the problem. The proposed method will be verified using a set of one-year historical data. The results show that the method could generate wind data series in an effective way.","PeriodicalId":268687,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130371732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the proposed MAS, agents all over the feeder communicate with their neighbors and use the local differential current information to locate the faulty zone and isolate the fault. Agents update their local knowledge by exchanging their voltage and current phasor data with their neighbors and monitoring the local current. The distributed generation penetration is considered to be up to 50 percent. The multi-agent models are simulated in Matlab® Simulink using user defined s-functions and the power system is modeled using the Simulink Simpower toolbox. The proposed method has been tested on a model of an existing Mon Power company circuit. Both faulted zone and fault type have been successfully identified.","PeriodicalId":268687,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132611880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Comparing to analytical methods, MCS for PLF has advantages such as flexibility, general purpose, able to deal with large nonlinearity and large variances, and embarrassingly parallelizable. However, MCS also suffers from low convergence speed and high computational burden, especially for problems with multiple random variables. In this paper, we proposed a Quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) based method to solve the PLF for radial distribution network. QMC uses samples from low-discrepancy sequence intended to cover the high dimension random sample space as uniformly as possible. The QMC method is particularly suitable for the high dimension problems with low effective dimensions, and has been successfully used to solve large scale problems in econometrics and statistical circuit design. In this paper, we showed that the PLF for radial distribution system has the similar properties and can be a good candidate for QMC method. The proposed method possesses the advantage of MCS method and significantly increases the convergence rate and overall speed. Numerical experiment results on IEEE test feeders have shown the effectiveness of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":268687,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126148493","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The technique has found wide application as part of the more general topic of system engineering. In this paper, we consider the applicability of TRLs to systems being readied for the smart grid. We find that there are many useful parallels, and much to be gained by this application. However, TRLs were designed for a developer who was also a user. That is not usually the case for smart grid developments. We consider the matter from the point of view of the company responsible for implementation, typically a utility, and we find that there is a need for connecting the many standards in the industry. That connection is explored, and some new considerations are introduced.","PeriodicalId":268687,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130270397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we investigate the effects of Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks on load frequency control (LFC) of smart grids. In contrast with existing works, we consider the problem that how DoS attacks affect the dynamic performance of a power system. The state space model of power systems under DoS attacks is formulated as a switched system. By applying switched system theories, the existence of DoS attacks that make the dynamics of a power system unstable is proved. A two-area power system is used to conduct case studies. The dynamic performance of the power system, such as convergence and steady-state errors, is compared under different DoS attack scenarios. It is shown that the dynamic performance of the power system is affected strongly if the adversaries launch DoS attacks before the dynamics of the power system converge.","PeriodicalId":268687,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128735246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The load reduction was provided by electric heating systems in larger dwellings (e.g., office buildings). Two simulation models were developed to assess the market performance of the Aggregator. From the simulation results it was concluded that the PPR market was not optimal for the proposed Aggregator. Among other things, the market was too inflexible and the profits were just a small subvention of the larger day-ahead electricity purchases. Also, it was concluded that the Aggregator was exposed to several risks by participating on the market, e.g. situations of shortage in available power capacity. A number of countermeasures to mitigate these risks were presented.","PeriodicalId":268687,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128860734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
