This syndrome, if left untreated, is charactereized by a high mortality. In subjects with HLHS, the left ventricle is underdeveloped or, in the worst cases, not functional at all: this condition evidently hampers the circulatory support usually exerted by the ventricle. Starting from the 1980s, the clinical option for a treatment (or, more precisely, a palliation) of the HLHS subject has been given by exploiting the right ventricle in order to support systemic circulation (usually supported by the left ventricle). This has been realized with a multi-step approach, with different surgical operations, the final step being the realization of the Total Cavopulmonary Connection (TCPC), with the venae cavae directly connected to the pulmonary arteries. Since the complexity of the condition, it is not surprising that a multidisciplinary approach is required; in particular, the necessity of minimizing the power lost in the connection is essential. The objective of this study is to characterize hemodynamically a HLHS subject, previously operated on at the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital (Rome).Methods: The diagnostic MRI sets of the subject, obtained at follow-up, were analyzed using image processing software. The binarization of the images, required to label the blood domain, was performed via two-level thresholding, thus labeling the blood domain of the compartments of interest. A manual processing of the resulting volume was needed to isolate as much as possible the blood compartment from the rest of the anatomy, though, since two constant thresholds are generally insufficient to perfectly segment vessels throughout the image. The blood compartment volume was then discretized, using an unstructured mesh (more than 1 million tetrahedral cells). Suitable boundary conditions (BC) were set, using clinical data obtained in the follow-up. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study was executed, using the mathematical model of the anatomy and the boundary conditions, in stationary conditions.Results: The morphology of the calculated flow field was highly dependent on the closeness of the IVC and SVC anastomoses to the right pulmonary bifurcation: this entailed a complex flow field, with the pathlines’ direction showing large deviations, in particular along the path from the inferior vena cava to the inferior branch of the right pulmonary artery. The analysis of the pathlines demonstrated that the IVC flow (carrying hepatic factors from the liver) contributes to either RPA branch, as well as to the LPA. This has clinical relevance, considering that the hepatic factors carried by the IVC flow are essential for the physiological growth of the vessels. The good hemodynamical performance of the connection is also confirmed by its high hydraulic efficiency (94%).Conclusion: Patient-specific studies of HLHS or other relevant congenital pathol","PeriodicalId":268311,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 20th Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference ( MELECON)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123772841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system is intended as a multipurpose power link for low power appliances such as mobile phones charging and lighting. In order to maximize the efficiency of the system, several compensation topologies have been investigated, simulated and compared. The performance of each topology in terms of transmission efficiency and component current/voltage stresses was studied. A test bench setup was then developed, implemented and tested in order to validate the results obtained from the analytical equations.","PeriodicalId":268311,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 20th Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference ( MELECON)","volume":"138 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127448564","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The radiation sensor (C-sensor) is based on a Floating Gate (FG) MOS discharge principle. The output current is processed by a current-to-voltage (I/V) interface and then converted by a 5-bit flash ADC. The dosimeter is re-usable (FG can be recharged) and can detect a dose up to 1krad (Si) with a resolution of 30rad (Si) typical over temperature 0 to 85°C range. The ADC allows easy further signal processing for calibration and averaging, etc. The power consumption of C-sensor plus I/V interface is < 2mW from a 5 V power supply. The overall layout area is less than 0.25mm2. The Radiation-Hardened-By-Design (RHBD) approach guarantees that the absorbed dose does not degrade the circuitry.","PeriodicalId":268311,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 20th Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference ( MELECON)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125326077","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model of magnetic hysteresis is incorporated into a 1-D and 2-D finite element method solvers in time domain. The particular attention to the accurate prediction of the magnetic losses allows an appreciable control and limitation in the volume and weight of the components that is a critical issue in avionic environment. Classical electrical steels for avionic components are taken into account in the paper. The related identification procedure of the model by dedicated measurements and artificial intelligence algorithm is applied. A test benchmark is presented and discussed and the predicted results are compared to the experimental results.","PeriodicalId":268311,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 20th Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference ( MELECON)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114429593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Selected models of mutually delayed stochastic signals were used in the simulations, corresponding to the signals obtained from scintillation detectors in radioisotope measurements of liquid-gas two-phase flow. Standard deviations of the values of the individual functions were designated and compared, along with standard deviations of time delay estimates determined on their basis. The obtained results were compared with the results for classic cross-correlation function (CCF). It was found that for the analysed range of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR): 0.2 ≤ SNR ≤ 5, the lowest values of standard deviation of time delay estimates were obtained for the CCFHT function (cross-correlation with the Hilbert Transform of the delayed signal).","PeriodicalId":268311,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 20th Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference ( MELECON)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126923525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Italian government recently emitted two decrees to promote the introduction of renewable energy technologies in 21 non-interconnected islands, both for electrical and thermal uses. In this paper, the economic and environmental feasibility of the introduction of renewable energies in the island of Pantelleria was assessed adopting an optimization approach. Furthermore, the flexibility provided from the local desalination plant and the domestic water heaters was evaluated. The final demands for electricity, air conditioning, domestic hot water and freshwater were analyzed, and the island was schematized as a multi-carrier energy hub and optimized through a mixed integer linear programming algorithm. Results prove that the renewable energies may provide a strong reduction of operating costs and greenhouse emissions of diesel generators in non-interconnected islands, although the optimal configurations differ according to the objective function of the optimization.","PeriodicalId":268311,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 20th Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference ( MELECON)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122142551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Logs recording the interactions between students and VLEs are collected on a daily basis, thus automatic techniques are needed to manage and analyze such huge quantities of data. Students, teachers, managers, and in general all stakeholders involved in the VLEs’ learning activities, can take advantage of the insights coming from educational data and useful information can be extracted by using machine learning techniques. Traditionally, educational data have been studied as stationary data by using conventional machine learning methods. However, educational data are non-stationary by nature and they can be better treated as data streams. In this paper, we show the results of a classification study where the random forest algorithm, applied both in batch and adaptive mode, is used to develop a model for predicting the failure/success of students’ exams. Moreover, a feature importance analysis is carried out to detect the most discriminant attributes for the predictive task. Experiments were performed on the Open University Learning Analytics Dataset (OULAD) showing the reliability of adaptive random forest in creating accurate classification models from evolving educational data.","PeriodicalId":268311,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 20th Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference ( MELECON)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128988708","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
