Medical advances have not only extended life expectancy, but they have allowed people of all ages to live longer with chronic, often severely painful and disabling conditions. A corresponding assurance of quality of life, however, is not guaranteed. The health care system must respond to the needs of incurably ill patients with adequate relief from suffering, and to their families with assistance in managing their burden of care and possible financial hardships. The end of life is an important phase of life. People have the right to expect the highest quality of care possible and have their wishes about care respected. They also deserve the opportunity to address key personal issues and have their symptoms well controlled to permit the highest quality of life possible until life’s end.","PeriodicalId":268184,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pharmaceutical Care in Pain & Symptom Control","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117280613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When used effectively, the NNT is a powerful tool for decision making. The NNT can allow clinicians to assess whether new treatments are applicable to their patient population as well as an individual patient. Clinicians who understand the statistical terms associated with the NNT are better equipped to make decisions regarding a specific treatment and NNT described in a trial. Many authors describe new ways to describe and utilize the NNT. This paper reviews these new methods and reviews the statistical terms associated with the NNT, using specific examples from the pain literature.","PeriodicalId":268184,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pharmaceutical Care in Pain & Symptom Control","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131046378","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As reported by the APA's monthly magazine, the report finds that psychologists are “virtually absent” in end-of-life care arenas. This commentary addresses the validity of that claim, discusses ways in which psychologists have contributed to palliative care to date, and suggests some ways in which the profession may increase its visibility and value in the field of palliative care.","PeriodicalId":268184,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pharmaceutical Care in Pain & Symptom Control","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123447001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
