Such a network is built up using a mixture of many different technologies, both for switching user-to-user information and for signalling. The present contribution focusses on the \"traditional\" public network (i.e. B-ISDN as the next version of PSTN and ISDN), and the upcoming networks getting more and more global attention (i.e. Internet and CATV). Each of the networks has its own history, and was originally intended for its own specific user-group. Hence, there are different architectures used in the different networks, especially for the service-network. All these technologies have the same basic goal: providing connectivity between the end-users of the system. And the more the world's community get access to all these networks, the more important the end-users, and their wishes, are relevant to these networks. This contribution identifies what INs may teach other networks, but also what other networks may teach INs.","PeriodicalId":267616,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IN'96","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130363003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

INs will facilitate the rapid and efficient introduction of new services that meet various customer needs; they will also allow easy modification of existing services. The introduction of INs may cause various patterns of overload traffic conditions. With the introduction of these diverse services, it is becoming more and more important to satisfy quality of service (QoS) requirements. We propose an overload control method that makes it possible to maintain high throughput while satisfying the QoS requirements under any overload traffic conditions. This paper begins by first showing the characteristics of the IN. Next, it is shown that the IN architecture and its traffic characteristics lead to new problems in overload control. To overcome these problems, we consider the requirements for overload control, and an overload control method is proposed. Then, we evaluate this method's performance by simulation.","PeriodicalId":267616,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IN'96","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127032618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first phase was developed with \"Type A\" services in mind to bound the scope of the work while retaining commercial viability. All other services were arbitrarily grouped as \"Type B\". The IN \"Type A\" services are defined by the ITU-T in Recommendation 4.1211 which includes a number of limitations selected to avoid implementation, operational and control complexity, while still enabling a commercially viable suite of capabilities. The ITU-T Study Group 11 has specified Capability Set 1 (CS-1) and CS-1R (CS-1 \"Refined\"). Capability Set 2 is being worked on, with solidification of the specifications, but the same restrictions remain in place. The \"Type A\" restrictions exclude the application of IN technology to the delivery of multimedia and multi-party services. These services must be addressed with the increasing relevance and importance of broadband and multi-party services. The implications of each of the \"Type A\" restrictions is examined in turn, showing options by which the restrictions can be removed, and the network evolved towards a full range of services network of the future. In removing the single medium constraint, it is necessary to address the relationship of \"call\" processing to \"connection\" processing. These concepts are defined and their relationship explored. The paper concludes with some suggestions on the priorities for evolving IN technology and its application to an increasing scope of successful services.","PeriodicalId":267616,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IN'96","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130605449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The IP provides the 'ears and mouth' of the intelligent network. It is responsible for playing announcements to, and collecting information from callers, as required by the service logic, and as directed by the service control point. IP functions are specified by IN standards, such as ITU-T CS1-R, ETSI Core INAP and Bellcore AIN 0.2. The level of the function required of an IP by these standards is very low; it is required simply to play individual announcements, or collect single items of user input. This level of function hardly deserves to be called 'intelligent'. In our view it is beneficial to assign a higher level of function to the IP for the following reasons: (1) to enable new services to be implemented which are impossible with current standards; (2) to exploit the capabilities which are typically available on modem implementations of the IP; and (3) to make efficient use of the available signalling network bandwidth.","PeriodicalId":267616,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IN'96","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134374244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is a need for a model of design centred around user needs and participation, with a deeper conception of interaction. A reorientation of our view of the fundamental nature of interactive systems is needed. It moves away from a view of systems as fixed \"black boxes\" artifacts, towards a new view of \"systems-in-use\" open to change. In this paper, we present a multi-agent system for multimedia conference control. Autonomous agents are useful for control as well for cooperative applications, but here we treat only control aspects.","PeriodicalId":267616,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IN'96","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114494161","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, competition in the local loop is inextricably linked to the ability to retain one's telephone number when switching service providers, especially in the case of business customers. Thus, the concept of local number portability (LNP) is gaining momentum in the industry. The article first defines the various flavors of LNP and the current focus of the industry. The network implications of LNP are then described. Using this as background, the objectives for a generic and flexible LNP solution that minimizes network impacts are formulated. A \"hybrid IN\" solution that meets the objectives is then developed. The solution is hybrid in the sense that it uses AIN 0.1 triggers and messages for providing the basic call processing while using an AIN 0.0 Enhanced 800-like (E800-like) query/response messaging technique for proper feature operations. Various call scenarios are presented to show how calls involving LNP subscribers are processed using this solution. An interaction scenario for the CLASS Automatic Callback/Automatic Recall feature is shown to demonstrate the use of the generic E800-like messaging technique in providing correct feature operations. Possible evolutions of the solution are noted.","PeriodicalId":267616,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IN'96","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132965257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The rapid and customized provision of services, which we call \"intelligence on demand\" represents the prerequisite for the realization of a dynamic services market place. In this context a new paradigm is gaining momentum, referred to as \"intelligent agents\". For the progressively deregulated telecommunications services market, the intelligent network (IN) represents the technological basis for the rapid provision of advanced telecommunication services. How do INs and intelligent agents relate? Are they complementary or mutually exclusive approaches. What are the impacts of agent technology on the IN concept?. Within this paper we try to give some answers to these questions.","PeriodicalId":267616,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IN'96","volume":"2014 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127553480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
