Grounded in Halliday’s (2014) systemic functional grammar framework, the analysis examines the interplay between verbs and circumstances in predicates in expressing directional events. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive understanding of how directional events are constructed in Vietnamese by utilizing authentic language data. The study addresses the complexity of directional event semantics by exploring diverse perspectives on event classification and cognitive constructions. Given the challenges of analyzing a non-inflected language like Vietnamese, the research advocates applying Halliday's framework to enhance coherence in analyzing directional events. The results offer valuable insights into the semantic aspects of directional events in Vietnamese, benefiting linguists, language educators, and researchers interested in the broader implications of directional events cross-linguistically.","PeriodicalId":267534,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of English Linguistics","volume":"104 42","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140986820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Barry Cole's \"Reported Missing\" is a narrative poem abundant with deviations. It tells the story of an unsuccessful dialogue between a police officer and a man searching for his missing lover. Since the language used by the two men is disparate, their conversation ends in vain. The woman remains missing as a result of their communication breakdown. This paper aims to uncover the sources of the failure by examining the deviations in this unsuccessful dialogue, including deviation in the domain, deviation in the medium of transmission, and deviation in the tenor of discourse. These linguistic deviations represent the dramatic conflicts between the objective and subjective world, sparking reflection on the subjective beauty of one's emotions and the harsh objective reality.","PeriodicalId":267534,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of English Linguistics","volume":"108 11","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135137119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also aims at contrasting the effects of reading based on contextualized storytelling with reading based on dual-code model, text-only and multi-sensory approach reading to investigate the performance differences in reading comprehension and word recall. The participants were 30 first year undergraduate university students, who study English language and Translation at Isra University located in Amman, Jordan. They included 15 males and 15 females. The data were collected from a word recall test, an activity of story retelling in addition to a short questionnaire. The data were analyzed quantitively in the light of the research questions. The findings revealed that there is no significant difference between the mean scores of the three groups: two experimental groups and one control group) in term of the word recall test and the proposition. The multi-sensory approach is considered more effective intervention than Dual-Code Model and text-only reading in EFL learners’ overall reading comprehension was not proved in this study.","PeriodicalId":267534,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of English Linguistics","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135197652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, there has been a growing interest in exploring code-mixing due to its prevalence and significance in multilingual societies. This study aims to investigate the types and motivations behind code-mixing in Yuna's interview with a Malaysian music activist titled \"Korek Fizikal bersama Yuna.\" Employing a qualitative research design, the study identifies three types of code-mixing (insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization) using Musyken's classification. The framework of Hoffman's theory of code-mixing is adopted to categorize the reasons for its usage, such as expressing identity and emphasizing points. Throughout the interview, Yuna's code-mixing is prevalent, notably employed to assert her local Malaysian identity and establish familiarity with the interviewer. This highlights the significance of code-mixing as a powerful communicative tool for expressing cultural identity and building rapport in interviews. The findings of this research have broader implications for our understanding of language dynamics and bilingualism in multicultural societies like Malaysia. By comprehending how proficient multilingual speakers utilize code-mixing, we can gain valuable insights into the sociolinguistic aspects of language use and intercultural communication.","PeriodicalId":267534,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of English Linguistics","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132265199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite its importance, this area of translation studies has been largely overlooked by researchers. The author recognised this gap and sought to bridge it by examining the connection between theory and practice in this field. Translating religious texts goes beyond literal translation, requiring a deep understanding of different faiths and the ability to capture their essence. Unfortunately, the intricate nature of religious texts is often disregarded in translation studies, which ultimately leads to difficulties for translators as they navigate the cultural nuances and religious connotations embedded in legal and religious language. This study focuses on the cultural challenges faced by English-major students at Tafila Technical University when translating Christian marriage documents. The findings underscore the importance of cultural knowledge and provide valuable insights. By addressing these challenges and proposing effective strategies, this research aims to enhance the quality of English-Arabic-English religious translation, particularly in the context of Christian marriage documents.","PeriodicalId":267534,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of English Linguistics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128999702","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It researches into language proficiency, use, and identity of Jordanian Turks of both sexes. A mixed methods approach was chosen, drawing upon a combination of quantitative and qualitative data captured through two methods: sociolinguistic questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The data analysed in this study provide evidence that the female members of the Jordanian-Turkish community, whose linguistic repertoires are comparatively more bilingual than male counterparts, are undergoing a language shift in progress, and the male members, on the whole, are monolingual language users and have therefore shifted their language practices and only sustained ritualised cultural practices.","PeriodicalId":267534,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of English Linguistics","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121336189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite this, the reasons behind this instructional approach have not been adequately investigated. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the knowledge and perceptions of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Kinondoni Municipality, Tanzania, regarding the integration of pragmatics teaching into the classroom. A questionnaire was shared through Google Form and completed by thirty-six English language teachers from 8 secondary schools. Results revealed that the majority of teachers have a positive attitude towards the integration of pragmatics teaching and felt confident in their ability to incorporate it into their teaching, yet they have limited knowledge of pragmatics. These findings have implications for the quality of English language teaching and learning in the schools. The study recommends that more focus be given to the integration of pragmatics in the EFL teachers' education, as well as providing regular in-service training to English language teachers in Tanzania.","PeriodicalId":267534,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of English Linguistics","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114580215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These issues are: (1) the appropriate name for the speech forms (2) whether or not they are dialects of Yoruba or a distinct language, and (3) the internal relatedness of the speech forms. In an attempt to resolve these controversies, some existing scholarly works have come up with some proposals and suggestions. However, their proposed suggestions and solutions have not been able to sufficiently resolve the contentious issues. This being the case, this present study, leaning on history of migration, mutual intelligibility, syntactic evidence and neutrality hypothesis, advances fresh evidence and plausible arguments that would hopefully be generally acceptable and permanently resolve these lingering argumentations. Data for this study were elicited with syntactic checklist from purposefully selected native speakers, and were subjected to descriptive method of data analysis.","PeriodicalId":267534,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of English Linguistics","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126597510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More and more junior high school English teachers and students have begun to pay attention to the importance of English reading and put forward higher requirements for students' English reading ability. Studying the reading habits and reading strategies of junior high school students and cultivating students to master reading strategies is a very important issue in the current junior high school English teaching, which has very important practical significance. This paper discusses reading strategies for junior English teaching, designs reading training methods for different teaching stages, and discusses the functions and characteristics of three learning modes to improve students' English reading ability and self-learning ability. Through the use of different learning modes, according to the students' personal abilities and personality characteristics, we can mobilize their enthusiasm and initiative, stimulate their interest in English reading, and achieve practical quality-oriented teaching.","PeriodicalId":267534,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of English Linguistics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130487333","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
