We investigate a different approach where the user controls many tasks running in parallel. The idea is to let a user accomplish his goal more quickly by trying competing alternatives in parallel (or-parallelism) and by working on subgoals in parallel (and-parallelism). To help the user manage a large number of parallel tasks, the application must provide features to generate many tasks easily, to summarize the state of all tasks, to broadcast commands to related tasks, and to abort tasks that are no longer needed. A parallel interface to an application thus becomes crucial to enhance the user's productivity. We demonstrate this approach using DLP, a parallel, distributed version of the Larch Prover, an interactive theorem prover. DLP supports explicit parallelism and runs on a network of workstations. Users control DLP through a multi-window interface on a bit-map color-display. Many theorem proving problems that would otherwise take considerable user effort to solve have been done with relative ease using DLP.","PeriodicalId":267002,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 5th IEEE International Symposium on High Performance Distributed Computing","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124176819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With careful scheduling, resource-intensive applications can be implemented efficiently on metacomputing systems at the sizes of interest to developers and users. In this paper, we focus on the problem of scheduling applications on metacomputing systems. We introduce the concept of application-centric scheduling in which everything about the system is evaluated in terms of its impact on the application. Application-centric scheduling is used by virtually all metacomputer programmers to achieve performance on metacomputing systems. We describe two successful metacomputing applications to illustrate this approach, and describe AppLeS (Application-Level Scheduling) agents which generalize the application-centric scheduling approach. Finally, we show preliminary results which compare AppLeS-derived schedules with conventional strip and blocked schedules for a 2D Jacobi code.","PeriodicalId":267002,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 5th IEEE International Symposium on High Performance Distributed Computing","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125139090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the increasing availability of distributed systems, a few experiments have been carried out on different systems. These experimental studies either depend on task initiation or task initiation plus task migration. We present the results of a 0 study of load balancing using a centralized policy to manage the load on a set of processors; it was carried out on an Amoeba system which consists of a set of 386s, linked by 10 Mbps Ethernet. The results on one hand indicate the necessity of a load balancing facility for a distributed system. On the other hand the results question the impact of using process migration to increase system performance under the configuration used in our experiments.","PeriodicalId":267002,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 5th IEEE International Symposium on High Performance Distributed Computing","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131358207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These environments will be accessed via multiple interface devices. As we move from a desktop-centric computing model to a network-centric model, new approaches in the way software and data are handled will need to be developed. In this article, we outline the requirements for enabling the technological infrastructure, describe some first steps that we have taken toward building this infrastructure, and sketch directions for future development.","PeriodicalId":267002,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 5th IEEE International Symposium on High Performance Distributed Computing","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133694260","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is efficient because it is nonblocking, coordinated and thus domino-effect free. It offers some portability because it is built on top of MPI and uses only the services offered by MPI and a POSIX compliant local file system. As far as we know, this is the first real implementation of such a scheme for DSM. Along with the description of the algorithms used, we present experimental results obtained in a cluster of workstations, and discuss many insights that came out of the implementation effort. We hope that our research shows that efficient, transparent and portable checkpointing is viable for DSM systems.","PeriodicalId":267002,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 5th IEEE International Symposium on High Performance Distributed Computing","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114977054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is as yet little understanding of the higher level services required to support these applications, or of the techniques required to implement these services in a scalable, secure manner. We report on a large scale prototyping effort that has yielded some insights into these issues. Building on the hardware base provided by the I-WAY, a national scale asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network, we developed an integrated management and application programming system, called I-Soft. This system was deployed at most of the 17 I-WAY sites and used by many of the 60 applications demonstrated on the I-WAY network. We describe the I-Soft design and report on lessons learned from application experiments.","PeriodicalId":267002,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 5th IEEE International Symposium on High Performance Distributed Computing","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127745557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We start with a review of the past, present and near-term future of the \"Java phenomenon\", exposed in the background of some related previous approaches towards a distributed interpretative virtual machine architecture. Next, we discuss the anticipated role of Java in building distributed Web-based computing environments. We outline an evolutionary path from the current Web technology \"soup\" towards \"all-Java\" systems and we illustrate this process in terms of the Northeast Parallel Architectures Center (NPAC) Web technology prototypes (WebVM, WebFlow, Bridge-based Collaboratory) and selected applications (CareWeb, 3D Visible Human).","PeriodicalId":267002,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 5th IEEE International Symposium on High Performance Distributed Computing","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129943271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To support these evolving communications demands, computer vendors, switching product providers, communications carriers, and users are looking to ATM as the unifying technology to provide seamless services. ATM, if brought to the user, will indeed provide him with increased power and performance. This promise however can be fulfilled only by bringing the virtues of ATM to the desktop. This paper introduces a European Project to tackle on one hand the challenge of bringing ATM to the desktop and on the other hand adding value to ATM. Bringing ATM to the end user has meant bridging the ATM Control Plane functions with those of the User Plane using a middleware type functionality. To add value to and optimize the use of ATM, a service platform making use of this middleware was designed and implemented.","PeriodicalId":267002,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 5th IEEE International Symposium on High Performance Distributed Computing","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123062403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Beowulf is a class of experimental parallel workstations developed to evaluate and characterize the design space of this new operating point in price performance. A key factor determining the realizable performance under real world workloads is the means devised for interprocessor communications. A study has been performed to characterize a family of interconnect topologies feasible with low cost mass market network technologies. Behavior sensitivities to packet size and traffic density are determined. Findings are presented which compare more complex segmented topologies to the earlier parallel \"channel bonded\" scheme. It is shown that in many circumstances the more complex topologies perform better, and in some circumstances software routing techniques compare favorably to more expensive hardware switch mechanisms.","PeriodicalId":267002,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 5th IEEE International Symposium on High Performance Distributed Computing","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131227491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
