Such technologies vastly increase the size and complexity of power grid systems for modeling and simulation. This increasing complexity necessitates not only the use of high-performance-computing (HPC) techniques, but a smooth, well-integrated interplay among HPC applications. This paper presents a new software package that integrates HPC applications and a web-based visualization tool based on a middleware framework. This framework can support data communication between different applications. Case studies with a large power system demonstrate the predictive capability brought by the integrated software package, as well as better situational awareness provided by the web-based visualization tool in a live mode. Test results validate the effectiveness and usability of the integrated software package.","PeriodicalId":265395,"journal":{"name":"2016 Power Systems Computation Conference (PSCC)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127824916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These are being demonstrated under VISOR - an innovation project that has created the first integrated GB WAMS in order to demonstrate the capabilities and tangible business benefits of WAMS to the GB system. Other work from the project is discussed including hybrid state estimation, dynamic model validation, line parameter estimation and a new boundary constraint approach that uses angle difference in addition to power. Finally, selected learning from a review of existing GB WAMS performance is presented, along with details of next steps in the project.","PeriodicalId":265395,"journal":{"name":"2016 Power Systems Computation Conference (PSCC)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125387202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A model predictive control (MPC) scheme that relies on system wide-area measurements is employed for coordinated control action through these power electronic devices with the aim of preserving the system stability without having to constrain pre-fault transfer levels. Case studies employing detailed dynamic models are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for different formulations on a representative equivalent model of the future GB transmission grid.","PeriodicalId":265395,"journal":{"name":"2016 Power Systems Computation Conference (PSCC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131331340","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address these challenges, some U.S. ISOs have incorporated specific “flexible ramp products” in their short-term scheduling processes. This paper proposes an enhanced modeling approach to underpin flexibility in European Central Dispatch systems. The model employs a “multi-timing” day-ahead scheduling method, which allows for the optimal procurement of such ramp products on an intra-hourly (“real-time”) basis, when concurrently optimizing energy and reserves over hourly time intervals. Additionally, a probabilistic method for the quantification of the flexibility requirements is proposed, to align the real-time system ramping needs with the intra-hourly optimization intervals. The model is evaluated using the Greek power system for three market configurations. Results demonstrate enhanced flexibility features in terms of market efficiency and system reliability.","PeriodicalId":265395,"journal":{"name":"2016 Power Systems Computation Conference (PSCC)","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116464992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The event-driven metering (EDM) approach enables gathering data useful for setting up effective representations of the knowledge that can be extracted about the prosumers' energy usage during time. Specific comparisons between the EDM effectiveness in reconstructing the power patterns with respect to the classical time-driven metering at regular time intervals are introduced to show the remarkable advantages of the EDM approach. An enhanced average power pattern reconstruction mechanism is also presented, based on the direct reproduction of the average power at the fastest time step occurring before the event generation, and on averaging the power pattern for the remaining part of the corresponding time interval. The case study application is illustrated by using the highly variable power pattern of a residential user.","PeriodicalId":265395,"journal":{"name":"2016 Power Systems Computation Conference (PSCC)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123207645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed tool will aid planners during the decision-making process about how much energy can be offered to the clients, considering both forebay and afterbay inflow uncertainties. Hydro uncertainties will be modeled using real statistical data related to the forecasting errors. With this new approach the output variables which are currently deterministic will now be represented by probability distributions, allowing planners to evaluate the risks associated with a given operating strategy. The proposed tool will be tested in a case study simulating a flooding scenario. Results are presented and discussed in details.","PeriodicalId":265395,"journal":{"name":"2016 Power Systems Computation Conference (PSCC)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114480087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The investigated MTDC system interconnects synchronous areas within an AC power system. A novel primary frequency support (PFS) controller is incorporated into the standard control scheme of VSC station control to enable VSC- MTDC system taking part in primary frequency control under severe generation outages. An analytical method to determine the PFS gain is also proposed to assure an accurate schedule of exchanged power through VSC-MTDC system according to the residual transferable margin of the parallel HVAC lines. The proposed PFS controller uses feedforward control technique to forestall undesirable effects of transient frequency deviation on system dynamic performance. The PFS controller is then tested on a typical high voltage transmission system.","PeriodicalId":265395,"journal":{"name":"2016 Power Systems Computation Conference (PSCC)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129480104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This implies substantial challenges and new requirements for the electricity transmission as well as for the distribution system in order to ensure stable operation of the power system. The static voltage stability analyses of the German transmission system carried out in this paper confirm the need for further reactive power sources in Germany. Solutions for cost-efficient and technical reasonable concepts to provide reactive power considering contributions by transmission as well as distribution system will be introduced and evaluated. Additionally, for dynamic evaluation of innovative control concepts for frequency and voltage control a simulation framework is developed. Simulation results show that a system with conventional and innovative ancillary service providers as well as a combination of them can fulfill technical requirements.","PeriodicalId":265395,"journal":{"name":"2016 Power Systems Computation Conference (PSCC)","volume":"44 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131850447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The treatment of a significant part of this information can be simplified by introducing the concept of Load Area, a group of prosumers whose power injection has a similar impact on the distribution grid operating conditions. Thanks to the Load Area concept, a compact yet accurate representation of distribution networks can be obtained. The Load Areas allow to select the relevant data for both monitoring and control functionalities of distribution systems, as well as to represent the relationships between such data in a compact representation. In this paper, the Load Area concept is recalled, and specialized methods are applied to get a compact representation that exploit the radiality. The results from two test cases confirm the viability of the proposed methods and highlight the computational gains deriving from their adoption.","PeriodicalId":265395,"journal":{"name":"2016 Power Systems Computation Conference (PSCC)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125125217","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A symmetrical three-phase fault in an ac grid connected to a rectifier terminal of the MTDC grid causes the power injected into the dc grid to decrease, which in turn leads to a lower dc voltage in the MTDC grid. If dc voltage drops below a critical voltage limit before the ac fault is cleared, then the dc grid becomes unstable and its operation is disrupted. An analytical approach is proposed in this paper to calculate the critical clearing time of a fault in an ac grid behind a rectifier terminal beyond which dc voltage collapse occurs. A five-terminal MTDC grid modeled in EMTDC/PSCAD is used to validate the results obtained with the analytical method.","PeriodicalId":265395,"journal":{"name":"2016 Power Systems Computation Conference (PSCC)","volume":"368 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126705744","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
