This descriptive qualitative research focuses to find out how does karma associate with the world anthem against the evil portrayed in John Lennon’s song lyrics Instant Karma!, from the Psychoanalytic theory by Sigmund Freud. The song title is Instant Karma! itself is an implementation of a concept of accountability for your actions. Therefore, the view of the psychoanalytic put forward by Sigmund Freud (1901) is compatible to analyze Instant Karma! by John Lennon. Data were collected by studying, interpreting works of literature, and evaluating them. Studying means getting a better understanding of the song through close readings of the lyrics, contextual insights, and listening to it.  Interpreting means trying to find the meaning or theme of the song through related interviews with John Lennon as the writer, composer, and singer. Analyzing through song lyrics was the only way to be done since there was no music video. Evaluating means giving criticism about the song lyrics themselves. Criticism is not all about finding fault or any mistakes, but about how we interpret the meaning of the song itself. The data was collected together one by one through the note-taking approach to discover the data to associate with valid information related. The conclusion shows Instant Karma! by John Lennon portrays the outcome of a person’s actions in past and present states of existence. Those actions lead us to our fate. What comes around, goes around, what we sow, so shall we reap. The Karma itself is not only associated with bad output but also as a good one. Good deeds will have a positive effect while bad deeds will bring negative consequences","PeriodicalId":265238,"journal":{"name":"Loquēla (Journal of Linguistics, Literature, and Education)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129972468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data was taken from the novel “The Player” by an Indonesian female author, Aliazalea published in 2020. This study used a theory proposed by Hoffman (1991) to identify the types of code-switching. Furthermore, the theory proposed by Gumperz (1982) was used to identify the functions applied in the code-switching found in the novel. The content analysis method was used to analyze the data with descriptive presentation. As a result, 35 codes switching were found in the characters in the novel. The types of code-switching proposed by Hoffman (1991) are inter-sentential switching occurred 9 times, intra-sentential switching occurred 15 times, and emblematic switching occurred 11 times. There are 3 functions implied in the code-switching found from 6 functions proposed by Gumperz (1982). They are interjection, message qualification, and personalization. The other 3 functions are quotation, addressee specification, and reiteration which do not appear in the data. From the analysis, it could be concluded that intra-sentential switching is the type of code-switching most frequently used by the characters. Personalization is the function most frequently implied in code-switching as the characters tend to convey their thoughts by switching the language.","PeriodicalId":265238,"journal":{"name":"Loquēla (Journal of Linguistics, Literature, and Education)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134150212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This descriptive qualitative research focuses on finding out the class struggle suffered by the proletariat class in South Korea due to the 1998 monetary crisis portrayed by the lyrics of Dinosaur by AKMU, from the Marxism theory by Karl Marx. The song title Dinosaur itself is a metaphor in the context of debt collectors. On that account, the view of the proletariat social class put forward by Karl Marx (1867) is a propitious match for a song analysis in Dinosaur by AKMU. Data were collected by observing the lyrics, music videos, and related interviews with AKMU as the writer, composer, and singer. The data was flocked together by the note-taking approach to discover data to latch onto valid information related. The conclusion shows that Dinosaur by AKMU portrays economic conditions between the proletariat and the ubiquitousness of debt collectors in South Korea due to the 1998 monetary crisis. The solidity of the debt collector industry was bolstered by the emergence of families from the lower middle class who have entangled in the instability of the poverty rate in South Korea at the time the song Dinosaur was released.","PeriodicalId":265238,"journal":{"name":"Loquēla (Journal of Linguistics, Literature, and Education)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128946944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
