The ideal protection for data circuits must have high discharge capacity, fast response time, precise clamping voltage, and be almost transparent on the line. Those characteristics are obtained with hybrid circuitry which is made of a gas tube on the input stage and a diode on the output stage. Once the surge passes the primary protector without being stopped, it is clamped down by the solid state diode first, and then the bulk of the energy (99%) is handled by the gas tube. The diode provides a response time in the range of 1 nanosecond. It handles only 1% of the total energy dissipated. The diode must have a tight clamping ratio in order to reduce as much as possible the risk window. The inverter comprises power MOSFETs, fast recovery diodes, ferrite core transformers, and compact resonant filters tuned to twice the switching frequency of 25 kHz. It has high power-to-weight ratio, low total harmonic distortion and good output voltage regulation for both input voltage and load current variations. This has brought about such excellent characteristics as compact and lightweight design, fast response, high efficiency, and high power factor. The program has evolved into two divisions: the power systems engineering and operational review and the quality assurance review. Key elements of the program are based on existing practices and the pragmatic knowledge of the people conducting the review. Both reviews are an intensive examination of a power system's engineering arrangements and operational capability. Each review is conducted by a team of representatives from the power engineering, building design engineering (electrical), and switching maintenance disciplines. In addition to the core members, most review teams include selected central office personnel, an equipment mechanic, and an electrician. The review program has provided benefits in these key areas: (1) identification of potential service failure conditions, (2) containment of costs/realization of savings, and (3) collection and dissemination of information. The new converter is essentially a four-quadrant converter offering several advantages. These include high efficiency, reduced size and weight, excellent dynamic performance, and inherent galvanic isolation. The new topology proposed has the potential for a wide range of applications such as: inverters, rectifiers, and step-up step-down four quadrant converters for special applications. The key features as a rectifier are sinusoidal current absorption and unity power factor in both single-phase and three-phase operation. Special emphasis is given to the design of a 50 VA single-phase inverter for telecom applications (19 to 26 Hz ringing generator). The simplicity of the scheme proposed allows galvanic isolation between DC source and AC load without the requirement for a low-frequency transformer or DC/DC preregulating stage. In particular, the focus is on determining the impact of solar radiation and outside air temperature on the internal cabinet environment. The effect of materials, finishes, and insulation on the penetration of solar radiation is shown, and design ideas for limiting solar effects are discussed. This system performs not only centralized supervision and control functions, but also information processing (relational database and data communications tasks) and diagnostic functions. It accomplishes diagnoses by applying expert system technology to power equipment. The system is provided with a common standard structure and open communication protocol (OSI) procedure to accommodate the total operations systems of the future. It is equipped with an improved intelligent human-machine interface and preventive system maintenance functions. ALICE can supervise and control up to 210 telephone offices. It can measure up to 96 equipment points (e.g., heat, voltage, amperage for equipment) and monitor up to 576 alarms through remote transmitting equipment in each office. The authors describe the system configuration of ALICE, and explain its system functions for supervision and control, maintenance improvement, database/data communications, expert system diagnostics, and wide-area maintenance support. Targeted for remote power applications in the range of 200 to 50000 watt (average) load, this power concept takes advantage of the large peak-to-average load demand ratios encountered in these sites. This hybrid power system can be retrofit to existing power plants, providing an extremely cost effective solution to rising fuel and maintenance costs. Two system architectures, for DC and AC loads, are presented along with photovoltaics/diesel sizing considerations, battery sizing, component selection issues and the data on load vs cycle performance. It is a constant-voltage, current-limited PWM SMPS (switched-mode power supply) with instrumentation and other features suitable for this type of application. A controlled rectifier utilizing MOSFET switches converts the 3-phase-input AC power to a regulated 400 V DC supply. The switching scheme ensures that the input current waveforms are sinusoidal.
