Since long adaptive filters with sparse target filters usually converge very slowly, adaptation algorithms with fast convergence rate are needed. PNLMS is one of the algorithms that is designed for fast convergence on sparse impulse responses. But there are some disadvantages to this algorithm. The computational complexity of this algorithm is prohibitive, especially for long echo tails. Another disadvantage is that its convergence rate slows down significantly after the adaptation of large taps. In this paper we propose new algorithms to solve both these problems. In another part of this paper, we present a modified PNLMS algorithm with better computational and convergence characteristics. Proposed algorithms show a better performance than PNLMS both in convergence rate and computational complexity.","PeriodicalId":264814,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications, 2003. Such a scheme is only practical for watermarking applications, where the original signal is available to the detector as for a fingerprinting purpose. The aim of this paper is to analyze the quantization watermarking in the wavelet transform or equivalently in filter bank domain. We involve the nonlinear effect of dithered quantization in the filter bank analysis using the time-domain formulation of the filter bank. We derive a general and compact form for distortion in the host image due to the encoding and embedding process. The formulation can be simplified and optimized for different filter banks and dither signals. We provide some supporting experiments for the analysis.","PeriodicalId":264814,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications, 2003. K-means, which is a \"hard-max\" approach, converges very fast, but it easily falls into local minima. On the other hand, the NG and SOM methods, which are \"soft-max\" approaches, are good at the global search ability. Though NG and SOM exhibit better performance in coming close to the optimum than K-means, they converge slower than K-means. In order to the drawbacks that exist when K-means, NG and SOM are used individually, we have developed hybrid methods such as NG-K and SOM-K. This paper investigates the effectiveness of NG- K and SOM-K in an image compression application. Our simulation results show that NG-K and SOM-K have good scalability to the number of weight vectors.","PeriodicalId":264814,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications, 2003. Okabe et al., 1988], which is a learning rule for ANNs, is based on the principle that individual neurons and neural nets as a whole try to sustain a \"moderate\" level in their input and output signals. In this way, a close mutual relationship with the outside environment is maintained. In this paper, two potential moderatism-based local, gradient learning rules are proposed. Then, a pattern learning experiment is performed to compare the learning performances of these two learning rules, the error based weight update (EBWU) rule [Tanvir Islam, M et al., December 2001][Tanvir Islam, M et al., September 2001], and error backpropagation [Bishop, CM et al., 1995].","PeriodicalId":264814,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications, 2003. We consider the case where the channel is quasistatic (i.e. the sampling period is several orders of magnitude below the coherence time of the channel). There are no requirements on the length of the training sequences and all the received symbols that contain contributions from the training symbols are exploited. The interference from the unknown data symbols surrounding the training sequences is considered as additive noise colored by the transmission channel. An iterative weighted least squares approach is used to filter out the contribution of both this interference term and the additive white gaussian noise term.","PeriodicalId":264814,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications, 2003. It can automatically classify abnormal tissues in human brain in a three dimension space from multispectral magnetic resonance images such as T1-weighted, T2-weighted and proton density feature images. It consists of four steps: data matching, information modelling, information fusion and fuzzy classification. Several fuzzy set definitions are proposed to describe the specific observation universal. The fuzzy information models of tumor area in human brain and the particular fuzzy relations that contribute to information fusion and classification are also established. Three MR image sequences of a patient are utilized as an example to show the method performances. The results are appreciated by experts in radiology.","PeriodicalId":264814,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications, 2003. The method is based on the maximisation of the spatial gradient cross-correlation function, which is computed in the frequency domain and therefore is implemented by fast transformation algorithms. By taking into full consideration gradient magnitude and phase, the selection of salient and reliable image features is promoted and the resulting accuracy of motion estimation enhanced. The proposed method outperforms established competing frequency-domain motion estimation methods, most notably phase correlation, in terms of sub-pixel accuracy for a range of test material and motion scenarios. Our results also show that our method is considerably more immune to the presence of manually induced additive Gaussian noise.","PeriodicalId":264814,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications, 2003. As an indicator for the degree of saliency we evaluate an invariant of the spatio-temporal structure tensor that indicates an intrinsic dimension of at least two. The saliency is used to derive a list of candidate locations. Out of this list, the currently attended location is selected according to a mapping found by supervised learning. The true locations used for learning are obtained with an eye-tracker. In addition to the saliency-based candidates, the selection algorithm uses a limited history of locations attended in the past. The mapping is linear and can thus be quickly adapted to the individual observer. The mapping is optimal in the sense that it is obtained by minimizing, by gradient descent, the overall quadratic difference between the predicted and the actually attended location.","PeriodicalId":264814,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications, 2003.
