The quality of limestone is determined by \u0000 its mineralogical and textural characteristics and physico-mechanical \u0000 properties. The Struganik stone corresponds to marl, clayey limestone and \u0000 limestone (micritic and allochemical). The limestone is commonly layered, \u0000 either thinly bedded or banked. Chert concretions are present in all \u0000 varieties. The Upper and the Lower Campanian age were deduced by the abundant \u0000 foraminifers. Micrite limestone is an autochthonous rock generated in a deep \u0000 marine environment, whereas allochemical limestone is related to a shallow \u0000 marine environment but subsequently brought into a deep-water system. The \u0000 mass quality of the Struganik limestone is controlled by variability of \u0000 lithology and layering. The values of physico-mechanical properties, such as \u0000 density, porosity, water absorption and strength, were statistically analyzed \u0000 and the obtained data were used to assess the rock quality in the quarry. The \u0000 relationship among the quantified properties is described by regression \u0000 analyses and the equations of the best-fit line. The Struganik limestone was \u0000 qualified by its petrological and engineering properties coupled with \u0000 statistical analysis. It satisfies the majority of the requirements of the \u0000 Main National Standard as a decorative stone, but with a limiting factor \u0000 regarding abrasive resistance.

In the paper some results are presented and analyzed, especially those concerning the distribution of gold relative to trace elements in the secondary lithogeochemical dispersion haloes. In the assemblage of 8 analyzed trace elements of the Lece lithogeochemical field, Au, Pb, Zn, Ag and Sb show expressive, contrasting and mutually well correlated secondary dispersion haloes. The sedimentary sequence exposed in the erstwhile Tiruchirapalli district hosts a more or less com- plete geological record of the Upper Cretaceous-Tertiary period. Systematic field mapping, collation of data on the micro-meso scale lithology, sedimentary structures, petrography, faunal assemblage and facies relationships of these rocks, in the light of modern stratigraphic concepts, helped to enumerate the lithostratigraphic setup and depositional history of the basin. Spatial and temporal variations of the lithologies and revised stratigraph- ic units are presented in this paper. Many high frequency sea level cycles (presumably fourth or higher order) which stack up to form third order sea level cycles (six in number), which in turn form part of second order cycles (two in number), including seven eustatic sea level peaks, have been recorded in this basin. Trend analy- sis of sea level curves indicates a gradual increase of the sea level from Barremian to Coniacian and a grad- ual decrease from Coniacian to Danian. Such lasting sea level trends had their influence on the sedimentation pattern and facies association. It is inferred that depositional bathymetry was maintained at a shallow-moder- ate level, primarily influenced by a lack of major subsidence during the depositional history of this basin. The study also revealed a prevalent simple basin filling process and dominant control by sea level changes, rather than tectonic movements over the depositional regime.

The co-occurrence of Paleocene nannofossils, reported by some authors, and Maastrichtian macrofossil taxa in these sections indicates diachronism in the appearance of macro- and nannofossils across the K/Pg boundary. Thus, this boundary cannot be precisely localized except if the Maastrichtian fossils are assumed to have been redeposited, but there is no evidence of resedimentation. Maastrichtian macrofossils are found not only within the range of the Paleogene nannofossil zones, but also in sections overlying them in the Kajlâka Formation where new Maastrichtian macrofossil taxa, such as the echinoid Hemipneustes striatoradiatus (LESKE), appear and some inoceramid and cephalopod taxa range into this unit. These facts shed doubt over the applicability of nannofossils in determining the K/Pg boundary where this has already been firmly documented by macrofauna.
