Among groundwater resources, karst aquifers tend to be rich in sufficiently-accessible amounts of high-quality water. During most of the year, this water requires only disinfection prior to delivery to the end user. However, in many cases extreme rainfall and/or sudden snow melt results in transient turbidity, increase in bacterial count and temporary contamination (e.g. increase in nitrate and phosphate concentrations). To be able to determine the effect of the precipitation regime on various groundwater quality parameters, it is necessary to establish continuous monitoring of the parameter of interest and certain parameters should be observed at least once a day, if not more often (continuously). Such monitoring provides sufficiently long time-series of the considered parameter, so that autocorrelation and cross-correlation analyses can be undertaken and AR, CR and ARCR modeling used for simulations and short term forecasts. Apart from the theoretical background, the paper presents a case study of the occurrence of nitrates at a karst spring called “Banja” near the city of Valjevo, Serbia. A ten-year (1991–2000) timeseries of the discharged volume of water was used in the study, as well as nitrate concentrations recorded on a daily basis. In addition, daily precipitation was gauged in the immediate vicinity of the catchment and the rainwater chemically analyzed. The analyses included nitrate concentrations in precipitation. The generated timeseries were used for autocorrelation and cross-correlation analyses of nitrate concentrations in the Banja Spring pool during the entire period of monitoring, as well as in one wet and one dry year. Vuković","doi":"10.2298/GABP1879047S","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2298/GABP1879047S","url":null,"abstract":"The Rudnik orefield is one of the well-known skarn-replacement and high-temperature hydrothermal Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag-Bi-W polymetallic sulfide deposits, and is a part of the Sumadija Metallogenic District, Serbia. It comprises ore bodies grouped into several major ore zones. The pseudostratified and platelike ore bodies have relatively high content of valuable metals. The average content varies in wide ranges: Pb (0.94–5.66 wt%), Zn (0.49–4.49 wt%), Cu (0.08–2.18 wt%), Ag (50–297 ppm), Bi (~100–150 ppm), and Cd (~100–150 ppm). Generally, a complex mineral association has been determined. Iron sulfides, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena and sulfosalts are abundant minerals in the ore. Carrier minerals of Bi and Ag are Bi-sulfosalts, such as galenobismutite, cosalite, Ag-bearing aschamalmite, vikingite, schirmerite and gustavite. Copper, Ag and Pb-Sb sulfosalts have been found only locally. Complex Ni-minerals (sulfides, arsenides and sulfoarsenidеs) with Fe, Co and Ag were formed under to the influence of present serpentine rocks and their yield of Ni, Co and Cr in the hydrothermal ore-bearing solutions. Significant scheelite mineralizations have been found in the Nova Jama, Gusavi Potok and Azna ore zones. The presence of Bi-sulfosalts and argentopentlandite suggests formation temperatures higher than 350, and lower than 445°C, respectively. Therefore, the mineralization was formed in the temperature range 350 to 400°C. The continuity of pyrite, pyrrhotite and siderite colloform bands in relic aggregates shows frequent changes of fS2 and fO2 in hydrothermal solutions. Isotopic composition of sulfur also confirms that the source of the ore-bearing fluids was magmatic. In addition, the enrichment of Bi and Ag indicates a magmatic origin. The appearance of Biminerals represents a significant genetic indicator for detection of increased Ag concentrations within the ore mineralizations. Typical gangue minerals are quartz, silicates, carbonates, oxides and different oxy-hydroxides. The data about these sediments were obtained by exploration of two relatively shallow boreholes, RB 47/P-1 and RB 53/P-1, located on the left bank of the Sava River. Two genetic entities are distinguished: the lacustrine-palustrine deposits of Plio–Pleistocene age and alluvial deposits of Pleistocene and Holocene age. Deposits of the Plio–Pleistocene are clearly different, both lithologically and palaeontologically, from the overlying alluvial deposits. The Late Pleistocene layers (2-4) of the Baranica Cave near Knjaževac (Eastern Serbia) contain rich and diverse vertebrate fauna, as well as several Palaeolithic artefacts. The squamate reptile fauna contains three lizard and seven ophidian (snakes) taxa (Lacerta agilis, Lacertidae indet., Anguis fragilis, Elaphe quatuorlineata, Zamenis cf. longissimus, Coronella austriaca, cf. Natrix sp., Vipera ammodytes, Vipera cf. berus, Vipera sp.). This is only the second of Late Pleistocene herpetofauna described from Serbia. Radišić","doi":"10.2298/GABP1778047D","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2298/GABP1778047D","url":null,"abstract":"The application of a mathematical model that analyzes the transport of selected pharmaceuticals from the Sava River to a corresponding radial collector well at Belgrade’s groundwater source is assessed. The occurrence of selected pharmaceuticals in surface water and the corresponding well was monitored from 2009 to 2015. The pharmaceuticals selected for the present study are carbamazepine, trimethoprim, and metamizole metabolites 4-AAA and 4-FAA. Transport is analyzed based on experimental data (sorption isotherms) and a field tracer experiment that includes injection of the selected pharmaceuticals. The analysis shows that sorption of carbamazepine is relatively low and that this pharmaceutical does not degrade under the studied conditions, so it is not possible to accurately determine the degradation half-life. Trimethoprim is detected in the Sava River with an average concentration 8.5 ng/l, but there is no positive detection in well Rb-16. The average concentration of 4-AAA in the surface water is 34 ng/l and of 4-FAA 13 ng/l. The average concentrations of 4-FAA and 4-AAA in the groundwater are in the range from 1 and 1.85 ng/l. This paper presents a new finding of pachyostotc snake from the local quarry Dubovac, three kilometers northwest of Bileca. The specimen consists of 29 vertebrae, seven of which are detached from the slab. The two best preserved vertebrae are almost square shaped resembling Simoliophis rochebrune but considerably smaller. Vertebrae and ribs are extremely pachyostotic as inPachyophis woodwordy. Where incrustation occurs, groundwater entrance velocities at horizontal screens also need to be determined. At Belgrade Groundwater Source, maximum permissible screen entrance velocities are correlated with the oxic state of the aquifer, expressed via the redox potential, and the concentration of bivalent iron in the groundwater. The entrance velocities limit the rate of screen incrustation and are based on the maximum permissible increase in local hydraulic resistance at the screens. This is a novel approach on a global scale. In the case of anoxic groundwater, the derived permissible entrance velocities are much lower than estimated by standard, commonly used methods. The new approach is believed to be a significant contribution to well design. Jaroslav Cerni Institute for the Development of Water Resources (JCI) has developed software for estimating 3D groundwater flow, which relatively easily and realistically simulates horizontal screens and riverbed configuration and conductivity. The software is an effective tool for determining the capacity of the location and of the radial collector well itself. It is especially useful where the aquifer system comprises a semi-permeable interbed between the water-bearing layer, in which the screens are emplaced, and the overlying strata. A comparative hydrodynamic analysis of two wells at Belgrade Groundwater Source is presented in the paper. The results of the structural analysis of the Supragetic Unit metamorphic basement in eastern Serbia at map-, outcrop- and thin-section scale, and its importance for the late Early Cretaceous nappe-stacking are presented in this paper. The Supragetic Unit metamorphic basement includes various volcano-sedimentary rocks of Ordovician-Silurian protolith age. They were metamorphosed to the low greenschist facies with temperatures reaching 300–350°C and pressure reaching 0.3–0.5 GPa. The microscale studies show that quartz and albite demonstrate dominantly bulging and locally subgrain rotation recrystallisation, while chlorite, sericite and muscovite define spaced to continuous foliation recognised both at the outcrop- and the thin-section-scale. The statistical analysis based on the available map data shows low- to high-angle west-dipping foliation which is interpreted as an indicator of flat-ramp geometry of the Supragetic thrust, rather than east-vergent tight to isoclinal folding. At the thin-section scale ductile to semi-ductile C’-S structures indicate top to ESE thrusting. Subsequent kinking, recognised both at the outcrop- and the thin-section-scale, deform the older foliation. Those kink bands are the result of WNW–ESE to NW–SE compression and could represent the later stage of a continuous deformation event during which C’-S structures were formed. The youngest, brittle deformation is represented by subvertical joints with no offset recognised in thin-sections. A whole skull, bones of a forearm in articulation, and other skeleton parts were laying on the cave floor encrusted in travertine cover and in some places overgrown by stalagmites.
