Besides the half-bridge boost rectifier (HBR), and bipolar voltage (BVM) and unipolar voltage (UVM) modes of operation with the full-bridge boost rectifier (FBR), this paper investigates the case in which one leg of the FBR operates at the line frequency while the other one is modulated at higher frequency (clamped unipolar voltage mode, CUVM). In addition this paper proposes two interleaved boost rectifiers, one in a HBR version and the other in a FBR version. These topologies alleviate the current stress and inductor size problems present in the both HBR and FBR. Besides the theoretical analysis of the proposed topologies the paper presents a quantitative study of the inductor size and input current ripple reduction when compared to the basic HBR and FBR topologies. The IFBR reduces of 50% the inductor size, the semiconductor current stress, and the switching losses with respect to the UVM option as applied to FBR Also, the IHBR topology reduces the inductor size to less than 25% and the semiconductor current stress to 50% when compared to the basic HBR. The two proposed topologies are suitable for high power applications. Simulated and experimental results confirm the theoretical analysis.","PeriodicalId":263412,"journal":{"name":"Twenty-First Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition, 2006. This electrical power generation technology can achieve both the high efficiency and very low emission. However, two independent energy sources in the system, SOFC and GT, require more dedicated power management strategy. A novel power tracking control method is proposed in this paper to address the issue of power partitioning between two energy sources. In order to analysis and verify the control strategy in the hybrid SOFC system, a detailed system simulation platform is developed. The simulation results demonstrate that the power tracking control can effectively control the load power distribution between two channels.","PeriodicalId":263412,"journal":{"name":"Twenty-First Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition, 2006. This is to show how power electronics can benefit from the same advantages that have been exploited by the microelectronic industry, for some time already, regarding high density packaging, as implemented in modern digital photo and video cameras for example. Complementary technologies, enhancing the role of the printed circuit board from mere electrical interconnect medium to means to perform electromagnetic integration of passives, using specialised laminate material; to perform volumetric optimisation, using flexible foil; and to perform thermal management, using existing material and volume; are investigated as well as the specific material and technology limitations being faced by design engineers today. The investigation lead to a PCB assembled power converter implementing electromagnetic integration of passives, a flexible foil integrated-LCT winding realisation as well as a novel 3D-folding packaging method to obtain increased power density. The impact which the exploitation of these combined technologies introduce has been quantified using recently developed performance indicators, from which a critical look on aspects of improvement is possible. Experimental validation of the presented performance indicators are performed by means of a technology demonstrator. The design criteria and technology choices for this demonstrator, based on planar core-, in combination with flexible foil winding realisation technology, are also addressed.","PeriodicalId":263412,"journal":{"name":"Twenty-First Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition, 2006. If the transformer is driven asymmetrically without dead times, self-driven synchronous rectification (SDSR) is a very interesting solution. However, if the transformer is driven symmetrically, the synchronous rectifiers are off during the dead times and, as a consequence, the efficiency is lowered. This paper deals with the optimisation of a SDSR system, that keeps the rectifiers on even during the dead times. The system is based on using the output inductor to turn the SR on and the power transformer waveform to turn them off. Hence, the most important parameters have been studied in order to obtain the highest possible efficiency. This system is very interesting because it can be used in any topology with a symmetrically driven transformer independently of the output voltage level and for a wide input voltage range. The system has been implemented in a prototype in order to measure the real efficiency that can be achieved with the proposed scheme and compared with the efficiency of the same prototype without SDSR","PeriodicalId":263412,"journal":{"name":"Twenty-First Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition, 2006. Ignition is achieved by resonance when the converter is controlled as a FB inverter at the resonant frequency of the LC filter. After ignition the converter operates as a LF square wave inverter by controlling the FB to act alternately as a Buck converter supplying positive or negative current. While ignition occurs at the LC filter resonance, the Buck converter switching frequency is selected significantly higher to attenuate high frequency harmonics and avoid exciting acoustic resonances. System stability is achieved by controlling the input current to the FB (output current of the PFC front-end), resulting in a power mode control provided that the voltage supplied by the PFC stage is constant. A digital control circuit selects the different operation modes of the FB converter according to the lamp requirements.","PeriodicalId":263412,"journal":{"name":"Twenty-First Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition, 2006.
