The Northrop Grumman Corporation has recently begun a major sensor-development program of a pyrotechnic-pumped laser (PPL) illuminator and a range-gated camera. The near-term goal is a system that would deliver a penetration of 30,000 feet of atmospheric/obscuration. The PPLs under test have single-pulse power values that are orders-of-magnitude more powerful than conventional laser-pumping methodologies. The cost of these PPL's places them in the category of single use/disposable. This concept can likely be put in use for long-range operations in the mid-term (perhaps the year 2005). The system could provide all-weather, day and night earth imaging at very high resolutions. Since this long-range system would be required to image through approximately 30,000 feet of obscurant to be effective, PPL power levels and camera sensitivity is being scaled accordingly. Carried in the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle Endeavour in April and October, 1994, SIR-C/X-SAR simultaneously records SAR data at three wavelengths (L-, C-, and X-bands; 23.5, 5.8 and 3.1 cm, respectively). In addition, the full polarimetric scattering matrix may be obtained at L- and C-band. Scientific investigations are continuing using SIR-C/X-SAR data in topics in geology, hydrology, ecology, oceanography and radar remote sensing techniques. Vegetation classification, biomass measurement, forest-floor flood imaging, snow cover distribution and wetness, and soil moisture estimation are some of the quantitative measurements that can be conducted using SIR-C/X-SAR data. In addition, a number of longer-term processes bearing on global change are being studied, including conditions of alpine glaciers, forest ecosystem health, volcanic activity, and desert processes. The October flight included acquisition of experimental repeat-pass interferometry data that have been used to generate digital elevation models and for detection of surface motions in volcanic, tectonic and glacial terrains.","PeriodicalId":262646,"journal":{"name":"1996 IEEE Aerospace Applications Conference. The HSI is an Earth Observing, imaging spectrometer which combines two grating spectrometers and a panchromatic camera into one compact unit. The instrument produces images in 384 contiguous, uniform spectral bands between 0.4 /spl mu/m and 2.5 /spl mu/m. The hyperspectral images have 30 meter spatial resolution. A 5 meter panchromatic camera allows further spatial enhancement (sharpening) of the hyperspectral image. The optical system, focal places and electronics are described. In-flight calibration features maintain radiometric accuracy of the instrument data, which is essential for the range of scientific, commercial and educational applications planned. They now have very different performance characteristics from the giant slalom, racing, bump and recreational skis. However, very little is known about the changes in these materials after thousands of cycles of finite strain levels. We study the dynamic behavior of skis using the nondestructive technique of modal analysis. This method separates the fundamental modes of vibration. The mode shapes are generated and the dampening factors are calculated for the different modes. Each mode is dynamically displayed on a computer and the data sets printed out. Though its effects are likely to be transient, frequent occurrences of these upsets may lead to the loss of system stability. In this paper, we compute the stationary probability of those upsets induced due to EMI by using parameters accounting for EMI behavior and the conditional probabilities of upsets in the presence of EMI. The latter represents susceptibility to EMI depending upon the electrical shielding properties of controllers against various intensities and frequencies of EMI. We use a Markov-chain model to describe burst upsets when EMI is present. We then modify a system dynamic equation by including the stochastic features (occurrences/magnitudes) of these upsets, and examine the condition of system stability for the mean behaviors of the modified equation. The derived information about the required level of the stationary probability of upsets is a key to the design and verification of the integrity of reliable controllers. We also present a simple experiment emulating EMI on data transmission to estimate the necessary parameters and a demonstration example about system stability.","PeriodicalId":262646,"journal":{"name":"1996 IEEE Aerospace Applications Conference. This internal communication is significantly different than terrestrial data traffic. Satellite constraints impose requirements not present in terrestrial systems. Performance of candidate architectures against satellite data traffic is likely to produce some counterintuitive results. This paper proposes a worst case model of data traffic for satellites. This model is then used to compute the response of several data architectures against this traffic. This paper presents a summary of the baseline cooling configurations, assesses the advantages and disadvantages of the candidate thermal switch designs, and describes the requirements and configuration for a validation demonstration utilizing a sorption bed gas source. The primary infrared focal plane array (IRFPA) is cooled by a pair of cryogenic refrigerators at 60 K and a co-located second infrared focal plane assembly operating at a higher temperature is passively cooled by a cryogenic radiator at 135 K. The configuration relies on a cryogenic switch to thermally isolate the two cooling systems. The cryogenic thermal switch also has application to the Objective Flight System to reduce heat load parasitics from a redundant refrigerator system. Several thermal switch designs (including a gas gap switch, with remote storage or sealed gas, and a diode heat pipe) were evaluated. A configuration and requirements were developed for a validation demonstration program utilizing a gas gap sorption switch. The requirements were also flowed into an existing cryogenic flexible diode heat pipe technology program.","PeriodicalId":262646,"journal":{"name":"1996 IEEE Aerospace Applications Conference. Are these activities distinct from other system engineering activities? Is there a recognizable approach to doing them, an architecting approach? The author, along with a group centered at the University of Southern California, thinks so.
