Modem silicon based computers process data in parallel using static memory and latching logic gates. If processing is to be possible in all-optical form we believe it is necessary to return to serial techniques since it has proved difficult to keep light still and obtain latching. Recent work at Colorado [1] has used these serial techniques to implement a stored program optoelectronic computer using a combination of electronic detection to control lithium niobate gates and optical fibres to provide the optical pathways. The key feature of the bit serial design is to use the time of flight of the light to provide a natural memory and to arrange for computation to occur by appropriate synchronisation of data and control pulses. One advantage of this approach is that the optical processing is scaleable in bit rate. In this paper we will describe an all-optical implementation of these techniques, based on the Nonlinear Optical Loop Mirror (NOLM)[2] switch architecture, with application to the operation of packet switched networks.","PeriodicalId":262564,"journal":{"name":"Nonlinear Guided Waves and Their Applications","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122581737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The AGVD has been used to make temporal dispersion isomorphic to spatial diffraction which in turn gives rise to the possibility of simultaneous two-dimensional, radially symmetric self-focusing and temporal pulse compression resulting in a 3D soliton or “light-bullet”. This light-bullet is fully confined by nonlinear effects alone but exhibits the behavior of both temporal solitons in fibers and spatial solitons in slab waveguides.","PeriodicalId":262564,"journal":{"name":"Nonlinear Guided Waves and Their Applications","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133388700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In nonlinear self-switching, the power-dependent coupling of energy between two channels is caused by the imbalance of nonlinear gain/absorption and/or refractive-index between the two channels. In this paper, we report the experimental results of nonlinear polarization switching in an InGaAs/GaAs single quantum well(QW) GRINSCH optical amplifier. The amplifier consists of a 10 nm InGaAs well. On either side of the well, it includes a 40 nm GaAs barrier, an about 200 nm graded-index separate confinement layer with AlxGa1-xAs (x drops from 0.4 to 0), and an Al0.4Ga0.6As p/n type cladding. It lased at the threshold current 120 mA with 20 % duty cycle at 974 nm. The amplifier had a length about 300 μm and a ridge 50 μm wide for lateral guiding. The electro-luminescence in the TE (TM) mode was centered near 975 (940) nm, indicating the relative energy state of the heavy and light hole subbands. In the experiment, we used a Ti:Sapphire laser (Mirra 900) for femtosecond and cw optical signals. After the signals passed through the amplifier, their polarization status and power distributions between the TE and TM directions were recorded, as shown in Fig. 1.","PeriodicalId":262564,"journal":{"name":"Nonlinear Guided Waves and Their Applications","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122603066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Shortly thereafter it was shown theoretically that this long-range interaction is due to the electrostrictive excitation of acoustic waves by light pulses and the subsequent interaction of light pulses with excited acoustic waves.2 Further theoretical and experimental investigations showed that the acoustic effect significantly increases the soliton timing jitter in communication lines and limits both the bit rates and information transmission distances.3 This acoustically-induced pulse interaction does not only manifest itself in the long-distance soliton propagation; experiments on passively modelocked fiber ring lasers indicate the presence of a long-range interaction that can lead to regular pulse spacing inside the laser cavity.4 Theoretical calculations show that the acoustic interaction between passively modelocked pulses in fiber ring lasers are complicated and can cause pulse bunching or can stabilize periodic sequences of pulses.5","PeriodicalId":262564,"journal":{"name":"Nonlinear Guided Waves and Their Applications","volume":"2015 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127677544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bright temporal solitons have been observed [1] in silica fiber in which the Kerr nonlinearity (n2) is positive and the dispersion anomalous (β2<0). Since bright solitons exist as long as n2 and β2 are of opposite sign, another regime is possible and was observed recently [2] near the band gap in AlGaAs waveguide having a self-defocusing nonlinearity and normal dispersion. In this case, the solitonic feature can be deduced from a temporal narrowing of the pulse with increasing input pulse peak power. For pulses of increasing peak power, the self-phase modulation better compensates the dispersion. Nevertheless it still not possible to conclude in a solitonic phenomenon in a strict way since no information was obtain about the spectrum. If an important spectral broadening with increasing pulse peak power occurs, it would clearly deny the soliton hypothesis. In this presentation we propose to introduce spectral measurements and to qualify the pulse behavior.","PeriodicalId":262564,"journal":{"name":"Nonlinear Guided Waves and Their Applications","volume":"5 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116765068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the most interesting effects is the ability of the spatial soliton, created by a strong beam inducing a sech-type refractive index profile, to behave as a waveguide, carrying a weak probe beam [2]. These waveguides can be made either with bright [2] or dark [3] spatial solitons. Such facts suggest further that colliding solitons might serve as X-junctions [5,6] and more generally as multiport devices. Several such devices have been analyzed to date [6,7]. The use of a probe beam with the same frequency as the pump is preferable because these devices then have no losses in the impact area of two solitons [6]. Moreover, a probe beam injected into one of the channels has no reflected component in this case. It passes through the impact area of the soliton collision and is distributed totally among the output channels. This is one of the essential properties of any ideal NxN switch. On the other hand, the use of a probe beam of the same frequency introduces the problem of its separation from the pump. Thus, from the experimental point of view it is more convenient to use a weak probe beam at different frequency [7], in which case the probe can be separated from the pump simply by spectral filtering. However, in this case “solitonic” devices like X-junctions or NxN switches lose their beauty because of losses in the soliton collision area [7] and the fact that an input beam can potentially be reflected into any of the input channels.","PeriodicalId":262564,"journal":{"name":"Nonlinear Guided Waves and Their Applications","volume":"42 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115625156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nonlinear optical fibre resonators can exhibit these Ikeda instabilities as well as the bistable behaviour [2-4]. Obviously, an unstable output is unwanted in a bistable device and methods need to be investigated to limit or remove the chaotic behaviour. One possible solution is to use a method for stabilizing unstable periodic points on the chaotic attractor by applying small perturbations of a control parameter, first proposed by Ott, Grebogi and Yorke (OGY) in 1990 [5], who stabilized an unstable point in the Hénon map, even in the presence of noise. We report here on the application of the OGY method to the Ikeda map, which can be shown to describe the iterative passage of the electric field around a simple nonlinear fibre resonator, see Fig. 1, [4]. The focus is on the fundamental possibility of controlling the Ikeda instabilities and not on the practicalities, which may be challenging.","PeriodicalId":262564,"journal":{"name":"Nonlinear Guided Waves and Their Applications","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116284037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
