This robustness prevents the soliton from being destroyed by various perturbations occurring in practical fiber networks. The European network is peculiar because it consists almost entirely of standard fibers with a high dispersion at the preferred communication wavelength of 1550 nm. Thus the large peak power required and the short dispersion length do not permit an increase of the bit rate beyond 2.5 Gbit/s. Recently two options for upgrading the network are in the focus of interest, viz. dispersion management in the soliton regime and the operation of the network near the zero dispersion point at λ≈1300 nm. With regard to signal transmission at λ≈1300 nm semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) are mostly used for periodic signal amplification. In contrast to erbium-doped fiber amplifiers SOAs introduce an own nonlinear dynamics into the line. Thus, even in the case where attenuation is neglected the resulting evolution equation does not admit soliton solutions. However it is worthwhile to look for solitary wave solutions because they may represent some stable attractors in parameter space. Thus it might be expected that one can save, at least to some extend, the robustness familiar from solitons. The aim of this contribution is to identify such solitary waves in a fiber line with losses and bandwidth-limited saturated amplification.","PeriodicalId":262564,"journal":{"name":"Nonlinear Guided Waves and Their Applications","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131571368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The application of solitons to long distance optical transmission has been studied intensively [1]. On the other hand, optical solitons are also useful for realizing optical signal processing, such as all-optical switching. Recently, photon number squeezing has been demonstrated by spectrally filtering of the pulses whose energy is slightly larger than that of the fundamental soliton [2]. It is not easy to take advantage of the sub-Poissonian state generated by squeezing in real optical transmission systems at present because of the intrinsic finite noise figure of the widely used Er3+ doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). However, the spectrally filtered soliton scheme should be useful for reducing noise caused by intersymbolic interference or amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in EDFAs. In this paper, we demonstrate that the spectrally filtered soliton scheme is effective in improving the signal to noise ratio in optical communication equipment.","PeriodicalId":262564,"journal":{"name":"Nonlinear Guided Waves and Their Applications","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114602351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been established that in the case of homogenous self-focusing media the interaction force depends on the relative phase of the solitons. In particular, two in-phase solitons attract while out-of-phase solitons repel. Phase-sensitive attraction, repulsion, and fusion of spatial solitons have been demonstrated in experiments with various nonlinear media including liquids [3], glass waveguides [4], atomic vapours [5], and photorefractive crystals [6].","PeriodicalId":262564,"journal":{"name":"Nonlinear Guided Waves and Their Applications","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132137640","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, until fairly recently, second harmonic generation in optical fibres has been more of scientific than practical interest, owing to the low levels of induced nonlinearity (~10-3 pm/V, which is four orders of magnitude less than in inorganic crystals, e.g. lithium niobate). The mystery of photoinduced χ(2) gratings was finally solved on the basis of the coherent photogalvanic effect [4]: a high (104-5 V/cm) spatially oscillating electrostatic field appears in glass as a result of charge separation induced by coherent photocurrent, oscillating with a period determined by the coherence length; this electric field produces a quasi-phase-matching χ(2) grating in proportion to χ(3). The conversion efficiency reported in the first experiments on photoinduced SHG-~ 5 % from a peak pump power of ~ 20 kW-is still among the highest conversion efficiencies achieved so far in optical fibres. The reasons for these relatively high conversion efficiencies has to be searched in the long length (tens of centimetres) and good uniformity of the photoinduced gratings.","PeriodicalId":262564,"journal":{"name":"Nonlinear Guided Waves and Their Applications","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122365095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

THG is yielded by a third-order nonlinear process, but it is difficult to achieve efficient THG because the third-order nonlinear optical coefficient is usually small. A TH wave can also be obtained by using two second-order nonlinear processes in series, and high efficiency can be expected because second-order nonlinear processes are usually more efficient than third-order nonlinear processes. In this method, a pump wave is once converted into a second harmonic (SH) wave, and then converted into a TH wave by frequency-mixing of the pump wave and the generated SH wave. Previous works used two bulk crystals and a birefringent phase-matching method for such second-order nonlinear processes [1]. Recently, efficient second-order nonlinear processes have been demonstrated by using a waveguide structure and ferroelectric-domain-inverted grating for quasi-phase-matching (QPM) in second harmonic generation (SHG) devices [2-8] and sum-frequency generation (SFG) devices [9]. We have proposed the application of such techniques to the generation of a TH wave [10]. In this paper, we demonstrate THG of a Nd:YAG laser light with cascading QPM-SHG and QPM-SFG in LiNbO3 waveguide.","PeriodicalId":262564,"journal":{"name":"Nonlinear Guided Waves and Their Applications","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116999116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
