One important example is the propagation of soliton-like waves, in which the fundamental and second-harmonic waves mutually focus and trap each other. The (1+1) trapping (i.e. one transverse dimension and one propagation dimension) yields both spatial and temporal solitons that can in principle occur in planar waveguides and fibers, respectively [1]-[2] Although spatial solitons appear to be easier to obtain experimentally than temporal solitons, their excitation still requires nearly phase-matched propagation in high quality planar waveguides. In this paper we report our investigations on the propagation of Gaussian beams in bulk χ(2) media [3]. Contrarily to the conventional self focusing case in bulk Kerr like media, we show that stable 2D-soliton like propagation is possible, in the paraxial, in phase matchable materials with a quadratic nonlinear response. Under a variety of currently available experimental conditions, in the presence of finite mismatch and linear walk-off between the fundamental and second harmonic waves, we predict the experimental observation of such new physical processes.

From a practical point of view the interest in SHG has been dominated by guided mode - guided mode (here referred to as type A) interactions rather than by guided mode - radiation mode (type B) interactions (also called Čerenkov radiation) since in the latter case analytical relations are difficult to obtain (due to the problems associated with normalisation of radiation modes) and because the geometrical shape of the emerging SH light is not favourable. Numerical studies on type B interactions [2] have merely focused on the SHG efficiency of structures in which the index of the the core at \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 2\u0000 ω\u0000 \u0000 (\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 n\u0000 c\u0000 \u0000 2\u0000 ω\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 )\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 is larger than the index of the cladding at \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 2\u0000 ω\u0000 \u0000 (\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 n\u0000 \u0000 cl\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 2\u0000 ω\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 )\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 and in which both are larger than the effective index of the guided modes at \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 ω\u0000 \u0000 (\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 N\u0000 \u0000 eff\u0000 \u0000 ω\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 )\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 . In this paper we report on numerical investigations on type B SHG of structures with \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 n\u0000 \u0000 cl\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 2\u0000 ω\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 >\u0000 \u0000 n\u0000 c\u0000 \u0000 2\u0000 ω\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 >\u0000 \u0000 N\u0000 \u0000 eff\u0000 \u0000 ω\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 . We find that in the Čerenkov regime the depletion of the fundamental can be almost complete when there is phase-matching to a leaky mode at 2ω due to the high propagation losses (10-1000 dB/cm) of these modes [3], The increasingly more complete conversion with increasing input power makes this type of interaction very interesting for optical power limiting of the input beam at co. Benefits of this scheme are a large dynamic range, the potential absence of heating (because it does not require intrinsic absorption), adjustable limiting levels and a wide wavelength bandwidth.

All-optical demultiplexing using nonlinear directional couplers (NLDC) has been successfully demonstrated in recent years[1]. All-optical multiplexing has also been demonstrated using fibers[2]. However, because of the weak nonlinearity in the fiber, fiber lengths on the order of kilometers are required. Thus, such devices suffer from long transit times which can be unacceptable. The passive means of multiplexing, using 3 dB couplers, Y-junctions and such, suffer from a 3 dB loss. Using strong pump pulses to control a signal pulse train through cross-phase modulation, we demonstrate an efficient and compact method of multiplexing femtosecond signals using a NLDC.

In fact they permit to localize the e.m. energy at zero-velocity in the laboratory frame, in a frequency range where the linear propagation is otherwise forbidden. A recent experiment on slowly-traveling localized states has been reported by Eggleton et al. in an index-modulated fiber through the Kerr effect [2]. However, the trapping of zero velocity solitons within the grating is still an open issue, despite the fact that perfectly steady gap solitons could become the basic elements in all-optical memories. More recently, in the context of parametric quadratic effects, structures with distributed-feedback gratings (DFBG), Bragg-coupled to one or both frequencies in media for Second-Harmonic Generation (SH G), have been shown to support two-color gap solitons, i.e. localized energy states of trapped field components at the fundamental (FF) and its second harmonic (SH), based on the interplay of grating dispersion, parametric gain and cascading phase shifts [3-7]. In this Communication we numerically demonstrate that stationary gap simultons can be excited in a quadratically nonlinear DBFG via inelastic scattering of pulses launched at the FF, and can be detected using a similar ”reading” beam.

Besides the numerical methods, a perturbation theory that can\u0000 take into account the bandwidth-limited amplification (BLA) and\u0000 nonlinear gain (NLG) or losses is required. The latter perturbations\u0000 can considerably reduce soliton interactions. With regard to a\u0000 combined effect of TOD and BLA, it was shown [1] that, e.g., a decay\u0000 of a two-soliton bound state caused by TOD can be prevented by BLA. A\u0000 new idea put forward in [2, 3] was that BLA which compensates for the\u0000 linear and nonlinear losses can, simultaneously, absorb the resonance\u0000 radiation emitted under the action of TOD, thus lending the soliton a\u0000 much better stability. This effect has been experimentally observed in\u0000 [4]. For large values of TOD, however, the soliton was obtained\u0000 numerically [3] in a state with a conspicuous velocity, which differed\u0000 from that predicted by the usual perturbation approach [5] by a factor\u0000 of 2.
