In this study, the use of binary time series for spectrum occupancy characterization and prediction is proposed. Both deterministic and non-deterministic occupancy schemes are examined. The proposed method can be seen as an approximation of the reliability output Viterbi algorithm (ROVA). The results provided by the proposed algorithm are only slightly worse than that of the ROVA, given a significantly lower computational complexity especially for codes with large memory lengths. Fourth generation networks (3GPP2, 3GPP, WiMAX), are packet based and use orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) on the forward link. In this case voice will typically be transported using the voice over IP (VoIP) protocol. With this approach, there is a trade-off between delay performance and user capacity since by using queuing one can more efficiently utilize radio resources but at the expense of additional queuing delays. In this paper we provide models for determining various performance metrics of such a system and compare the accuracy of the models with published simulation results. Symbol timing synchronization is an important issue in such systems. In this paper, a data aided symbol timing estimation algorithm was proposed for burst-mode STC-CPM systems over Rayleigh fading channels. A training sequence is embedded before transmission of each packet. The receiver first adds the signals from different receive antennas and then calculates the digital Fourier transformation (DFT) of the phase of the one-symbol differential signal of the sum. The initial symbol timing offset can be estimated from the phase of the tone component of the DFT outputs. MATLAB simulation results show that the variance of the timing estimation error is very small in slow Rayleigh flat fading channels and frequency selective fading channels and the degradation of frame error rate (FER) is significantly small under the condition of non-ideal synchronization. We first introduce the beamforming system where the base station (BS) utilizes only a fraction of the full channel response. The mobile station (MS) of the proposed system selects a single antenna at the receive side based on which the BS adjusts beamforming weights without any overhead to the structure of the BS. Without requiring the singular value decomposition operation, the proposed scheme achieves a performance very close to that of the optimum beamforming system. An exact analysis of the received signal-to-noise ratio for the proposed scheme with 2 receive antennas is also presented. We propose a new simple system to dramatically reduce PAPR with a combination of CI (Carrier Interferometry) spreading code and peak-windowing employing a Clipping/Filtering signal. It is observed that, if we cannot find the exact Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) thresholds due to different reasons, such as reduced Link Adaptation (LA) rate, Channel State Information (CSI) error, feedback delay etc., it is better to fix the transmit power across all sub-channels to guarantee the target Frame Error Rate (FER). Otherwise, it is possible to use adaptive power distribution to save power, which can be used for other purposes, or to increase the throughput of the system by transmitting higher number of bits. A time-division multiple-access (TDMA) based cooperative protocol is considered. This protocol has full data rate because the source transmits two symbols during two time slots. However, the protocol does not obtain full diversity gain, because each column of effective channel matrix has a different distribution. We propose the constellation rotation scheme to solve the problem. Also, we analyze the diversity gain of the proposed system with the maximum-likelihood (ML) receiver by deriving the pairwise error probability (PEP). The analysis proves that the system applying the constellation rotation scheme achieves a full diversity. In spite of the fairly high data rates that HSDPA offers, the shared downlink radio channel used in HSDPA is a challenging environment for delay- and loss-sensitive applications. It is relatively easy to partition resources over wired links with known link capacity. Nevertheless, such partitioning is complex for wireless links with variable capacity; due to the dynamic nature of the link, it is difficult to effectively allocate the resources (i.e., time slots) between users who may be paying different prices for different services. In this paper we study the general problem of resource partitioning for shared wireless links like HSDPA. We consider different QoS classes or user groups, and the use of MAC-layer scheduling for resource partitioning between groups and between individual users. We propose a variant of an existing HSDPA scheduler called required activity detection (RAD) scheduler.
