Third-generation ports emerged in the last decades of the 20th century, principally due to world-wide large scale containerization and inter-modalism combined with the growing requirements of the international trade. Ports turned into integrated transport centres and logistic platforms for international trade. The aims of this paper are to: (a) analyse the current conditions of Gioia Tauro port, in the context of Calabria Region (Italy); (b) propose strategic development directions and transport interventions towards a third generation port. Scenario and planned interventions in the port of Gioia Tauro are identified in the Regional Transport Plan of Calabria and in the strategic report of the Integrated Logistic Area (ALI) of Gioia Tauro. The defined scenario aims to achieve the objectives to strength the existing transhipment activities and to support the development of new port-related activities in the hinterland area. The infrastructural interventions aim to connect the port with the European networks and the access to/from Calabria Region. The interventions concern both the expansion of the port infrastructures, on the sea-side; and the increase of the railway and road infrastructures, on the land-side.","PeriodicalId":259696,"journal":{"name":"Urban and Maritime Transport XXVII","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121029363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Commercial ports are strategic nodes that facilitate international interchanges of goods at the global level. The port’s efficiency influences the choices on the entire transport system. By considering the strategic role played by ports, it is necessary to define a set of material and immaterial interventions that support its growth. This paper focuses on the Gioia Tauro port, one of the main hub ports in the Mediterranean Sea. According to UNCTAD’s classification based on the definition of port-generation, the paper analyses the port’s potentialities in relation to the possibilities to increase the production of value-added other than the one linked with transport activities. The strategic perspective for the Gioia Tauro is to become a full third-generation port. In order to achieve this objective, some material and immaterial intervention are needed. In particular, this paper focus on the contribution of research development for the port’s growth. The territory around the Gioia Tauro port is the Calabria, a region in Southern Italy and Europe. Transport, agri-food and automotive are the main productive sectors in the port area. The development of the research, like the most advanced best practices in maritime transport at the international level, should support the productive sectors. Universities and research centres present have a low level of interchanges with the Gioia Tauro port and productive sectors actually operating in the region. This paper contributes to defining a development perspective for Gioia Tauro port in order to realize a systematic connection between research and production. The strategic perspective comprehends a set of interventions aimed to activate and consolidate interchanges of knowledge and skills among public administrations and private companies.","PeriodicalId":259696,"journal":{"name":"Urban and Maritime Transport XXVII","volume":"572 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123926010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They represent an infrastructure that goes beyond the services related to the loading/unloading of goods and that offers the complete cycle of services within the supply chain. The port of Gioia Tauro is the first transhipment container (lift-on/lift-off) port and one of the most important for the (roll-on/roll-off) international traffic of road vehicles (automotive) of Italy. The increasing number of handled containers in 2020 is not enough to achieve the goal of making the port of Gioia Tauro one of the first European ports of the Southern Range. It’s necessary to fully develop its “third-generation” nature. This condition would allow to attract new companied, to increase the local production, the import and the export of the Calabrian regional economy. One of the possible ways to achieve this goal is the development of the logistics connected to the mechanical sector, with a specific focus on automotive. This sector in Calabria quotes about one third on the value of regional exports. The characteristics of the production plants is similar to that of the rest of the Italy: small and medium-sized enterprises are flanked by some settlements of world-leading multinational groups. The paper focuses on the logistics for the mechanical sector in Calabria, analysing the current criticalities and defining the development scenarios and the planned interventions strategies to be undertaken in the port of Gioia Tauro.","PeriodicalId":259696,"journal":{"name":"Urban and Maritime Transport XXVII","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115108509","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

High-speed stations, airports and international ports are increasingly becoming places of trade and therefore of added value production. In this sense, in addition to the primary functions for which they were born, they tend to assume others. The full development of a third-generation port implies the creation of some basic services that allow the port and the industrial areas closely connected to fully develop the port activities and logistics related to them. The port must maintain the characteristics of a highly productive system, but at the same time, the population of hinterland centers has to participate in the growth of the port, without inducing constraints on the activities of the port but, on the contrary, constituting residential rules areas with evolved characteristics. In other words, the port must be an opportunity for integrated development of the hinterland. By defining the area of direct integration, it is necessary to using some guiding international principles: from one side the port needs to have a service district and a residential pole that can share with hinterland municipalities; from the other side the actual urban sprawl can be modified regenerating the urban spaces of all nearby centers, and integrating the regenerated centers, according to the principles of smart cities. In the note, after the analysis of the development guidelines carried out at the international level, some nodes of the Italian transport core network TEN-T are recalled, that are characterized by being born as places exclusively aimed at transport activities. On this basis, the paper, referring to the real case of Gioia Tauro port, analyses the contribution that the territory can make for the full construction of a third-generation port.","PeriodicalId":259696,"journal":{"name":"Urban and Maritime Transport XXVII","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124695078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gioia Tauro is one of the main commercial ports in Italy, located in Calabria, Today, it is specialized in container transhipment operations and it has a great expansion capacity to become a third-generation port. In Calabria, there is a demand for logistics relating to different sectors present in the regional economy; however, this demand remains unsatisfied due to the presence of different problems. The agri-food sector, in particular, is one of the most important in Calabria and it is a distinctive element of regional productions. The main problems hindering the expansion of agri-food sector are: low innovation, small and poorly structured companies, limited availability of specific transport and logistics infrastructures. The completion of Gioia Tauro as third-generation port could allow to solving these problems and boost the regional agri-food sector, also in the context of improving the other economic sectors. This paper proposes an agri-food logistics scenario for Gioia Tauro as third-generation port, according to the Regional Transport Plan of Calabria and to the strategic report of the Integrated Logistics Area. The scenario is aimed to encourage the development and integration of existing supply chains, to enhance the Gioia Tauro hinterland in order to attract agri-food factories, operators, transport and logistics companies, encourage agri-food production for the local and the international markets. Furthermore, the paper proposes the set of planned interventions for the realization of the agri-food logistics scenario. These interventions are located in the hinterland of Gioia Tauro port, where there is a large industrial area suitable for the expansion of the sector. The interventions are mainly aimed at the realization of a cold-pole, and other related interventions.","PeriodicalId":259696,"journal":{"name":"Urban and Maritime Transport XXVII","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126032114","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this paper is to present the methodology to identify structural factors for the realisation of a Gioia Tauro third-generation port, starting from the analysis and the goals of Calabria Regional Transport Plan (RTP). The current state, limits and weakness of Gioia Tauro’s port are highlighted. The Calabria’s RTP on the one hand becomes the connection tool between institutional policies of various territorial levels, on the other it becomes an important element for the development of specific actions. Further work analyses the action and the measures that operate to reduce the limits and the weakness exalting the potentiality.","PeriodicalId":259696,"journal":{"name":"Urban and Maritime Transport XXVII","volume":"7 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126022689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this reason, it is important to know the trajectory of oil slicks in case of a spill in order to prioritize actions for oil recovery and thus to better protect areas exposed to pollution risk. For this purpose, several oil slick drift models are developed to study the impact of various possible scenarios and to estimate the environmental sensitivity of a maritime and coastal area even before this type of accident occurs. In this context, this paper presents the applications of a two (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) oil spill models, suggested to define the trajectory of the oil slick in a marine environment taking into account different meteorological parameters. The two models have been applied to simulate the oil spill propagation in the case of a collision accident that occurred off Saint-Tropez (France) on 7 October 2018.","PeriodicalId":259696,"journal":{"name":"Urban and Maritime Transport XXVII","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126393518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
