Substations are responsible for many protection, control and monitoring functions that allow robust routing of power from generators to loads through a complex network of transmission lines. With the latest technology development many intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) available in substations today are capable of performing enhanced functionalities beyond what their basic function is. This brings an opportunity for adding new functionalities that go well beyond what the traditional substation automation solutions have provided. This presentation summarizes requirements for automated fault analysis functions that may be performed in substations in the future. Particular focus is on requirements for implementing a new concept of merging operational and non-operational data with a goal of improving fault analysis. The requirements are aimed at expanding the substation automation role in automated fault analysis towards better serving many utility groups: operations, protection and asset management.","PeriodicalId":258632,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126088115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such results can also be used to valid several methodologies employed in automatic identification and classification processes of faults in distribution lines, which can still contribute to increase both reliability and safety when practical experiments are necessary. The compilations of the results obtained from the application of these strategies are presented for validation purposes.","PeriodicalId":258632,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116707880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But some problems, specially related to a codification that is able to represent and work with a complex multiconstraint and combinatorial problem such as this one, have prevented the use of the full potential of these algorithms to find quality solutions for large systems with minor computational effort. This paper proposes a solution to this problem, with a new codification and using an efficient way for implementing the operator of recombination to guaranty, at all times, the production of new radial topologies. The algorithm is presented and tested in a real distribution system, showing excellent results and computational efficiency.","PeriodicalId":258632,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115171192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Production of electrical energy using solar energy falls next to wind energy among all renewable energy sources. While a two-state model is well suited for modeling conventional generators, a multi-state model is needed for modeling solar/photovoltaic cell generators due to the random variation of solar radiation. This makes the method of finding reliability evaluation indices of solar cell generators different from the conventional generators. This paper presents a method suited for the purpose and presents details of a reliability evaluation study on a power system with solar cell generators. Test results indicate the viability of the method.","PeriodicalId":258632,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"47 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116652221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The algorithm is based on the concepts of network tracing and it supports both single-path and multi-path restoration. In case the network components are too stressed and even the multi-path restoration cannot restore all the out-of-service loads, the algorithm tries to shed minimal load while restoring as many other loads as possible. Capability of the algorithm is demonstrated with a few back-feed restoration solution examples.","PeriodicalId":258632,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127105078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such devices have gained popularity among the PWM-based compensation series devices. Two cases are studied: balanced and unbalanced voltage sags, which are the most frequent disturbances. For the latter case, a modified delta rule is used to transform the three-phase voltage into positive, negative, and zero sequences. The model of the LC filter is explained and a Software Phase Locked Loop (SPLL) based on Trans-vector-type is developed. DVR's simulations are provided. Hardware implementation employs a fixed point Digital Signal Processor and power electronics devices, as well as an SPLL. Experimental results on voltage sags have been dealt with to corroborate the adequate DVR performance.","PeriodicalId":258632,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127363008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is shown that the error in measurements with high UI is not reflected in their residues. This masking effect is due to the “proximity” of a measurement to the range of the Jacobian matrix associated with the power system measurement set. A critical measurement is the limit case of measurement with high UI, that is, it belongs to the range of the Jacobian matrix, has an infinite UI index, its error is totally masked and cannot be detected in the normalized residue test at all. The set of measurements with high UI contains the critical measurements and, in general, the leverage points, however there exist measurements with high UI that are neither critical nor leverage points and whose errors are masked by the normalized residue test. In other words, the proposed index presents a more comprehensive picture of the problem of single gross error detection in power system state estimation than critical measurements and leverage points. The index calculation is very simple and is performed using routines already available in the existing state estimation software. Two small examples are presented to show the way the index works to assess the quality of measurement sets in terms of single gross error detection. The IEEE-14 bus system is used to show the efficiency of the proposed index to identify measurements whose errors are masked by the estimation processing.","PeriodicalId":258632,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125010938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new wave of grid development is required, especially in order to integrate large amounts of nondispatcahble renewable to the grid. This requires a new increase in investments in transmission grids. Yet furthering network development in Western societies is more and more difficult due to strong social oppositions, which urges grid operators to imagine new solutions and to optimise the use of existing infrastructure. This paradigm shift for transmission development is discussed in the paper.","PeriodicalId":258632,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"469 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125865710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
