Based on the observation that the -ta ending sentences are statement delivered through declaratives while the -e/a ending sentences are directly addressed to the hearer, regardless of their sentence types, this study argues that -e/a is not an imperative sentence ending but a direct address marker, which has not hitherto been recognized in Korean linguistics. This paper clearly shows that any sentence directly addressed to the hearer ends with the -e/a ending, no matter whether it is a declarative, interrogative, or imperative form. It further develops this observation and shows that -e/a is a direct address marker, -la an indirect address marker, and the complex form [-e/a la] a combination of direct and indirect addressing, which induces pragmatic effect of attenuating the directness of -e/a.

In addition, we examine whether there are differences in the realization of intonation in Seoul/Gyeonggi-do and Daegu/Gyeongsangbuk-do depending on the sentence type. And the different utterances between the two regions are presented through the intonation type of the final ending ‘-ji’ appearing in the two regions and physical properties(utterance length, utterance start point, utterance end point, slope). The experiment of this study present objective data using a statistical program after extracting it by conducting production test on participants. An important point in this study is that it presents the difference in intonation between the two regions according to sentence type through objective data.

In this regard, although the subject of education is different, there are two positions that the grammar categories required for education should be set differently because the subject of education is different from the position that the grammar categories taught in schools should be unified equally. Just by looking at the position on Korean grammar, one can see differences in perception of Korean language education for foreigners and Korean language education for native speakers.. In this study, all of these differences cannot be summarized. However, by mentioning these discussions, I think it can be an opportunity to think about setting the category of educational grammar necessary for Korean language education. For this reason, this paper examines the categories and forms of grammar items covered in Korean language education and summarizes the terms used as references.

Since Korean is a topic prominent language, the current study hypothesized that Korean learners of English would also show such a tendency. To prove this hypothesis, the present study examined how Korean learners of English use there-existentials in their essays. The study results clearly showed that these learners did employ Existential Constructions to package the information of sentences into the frame of topic and comment, but not for introducing new discourse referents.

MERGE-LABELING, Transfer, and CED Effects. Studies in Modern Grammar 115, 27-50. Since the postulation of Huang’s (1982) condition on extraction domain (CED), adjuncts and subjects have been standardly assumed to be opaque for extraction. However, the CED is empirically contradicted by cases where certain adjuncts and subjects are not islands to movement. Given this background, we propose that adjuncts in general are immediately transferred to resolve a problematic configuration {XP, YP} where labeling cannot be determined (i.e., problem of projection (POP)). Being sent to Transfer, extraction from adjuncts is barred. However, as uncovered by Truswell (2007), there are exceptional adjuncts in which extraction from them is occasionally permitted. In such cases, we claim that labeling via feature sharing can be achieved in the mode of restructuring or reanalysis (cf. Choe 1988; Wurmbrand 2001). Since labeling is properly determined, sub-extraction from them naturally follows. Concerning the typical subjects that ban movement from them, we argue that it is due to the labeling-wise defectiveness of T in English; movement from Spec,TP to Spec,CP is not allowed owing to the prior Transfer of typical subjects in Spec,TP position. With respect to certain exceptional subjects in which sub-extraction from them is licit, we recourse to the determination of labeling at their landing sites; thus, the island-hood of such subjects is voided. All in all, the present paper deduces CED effects within the system of MERGE through labeling and Transfer.

MERGE and Pair-Merge of Heads. Studies in Modern Grammar 115, 1-26. Chomsky (2019a,b, 2020) reformulates the standardly assumed conception of Merge in terms of workspace, arguing that the operation only operates over syntactic objects placed in a workspace. Alongside this revised version of Merge, often referred to as ‘(capital) MERGE’ in the literature, he proposes a principle of Resource Restriction which, he claims, MERGE ought to meet. In this paper, I first review the workspace-based operation MERGE and present its empirical and conceptual advantages over its predecessor, Merge. \u0000I then examine the two proposals on pair-Merge of heads put forward in Chomsky (2015) and Epstein, Kitahara and Seely (2016) with discussions on their potential conceptual problems with respect to rule ordering and Anti-Locality. I further show that possible implementations of pair-Merge of heads in the MERGE-based system give rise to some new problems in terms of accessibility defined by Minimal Search. Finally, focusing on pair-MERGE of R and v*, I present an alternative analysis to resolve the addressed problems, arguing that the pair-merged structure of R and v* is generated, not in the course of derivation but inside the Lexicon via a merging process I call Lexical Merger, or l-merger.

Effects of Focus on Forms and Focus on Form Instruction on Middle-Aged and Elderly Learners’ English Grammar Acquisition. \u0000This study, to find an effective way for older adult learners to acquire English, aims to investigate the extent instruction needs to be intentional or explicit. \u0000Traditionally, the issue was dealt with in terms of the effect of two instructional approaches—focus on forms (FonFs) and focus on form (FonF). The results of the grammaticality judgment test with audio stimuli show that FonFs instruction is a more appropriate method for middle-aged and elderly groups’ acquisition of grammatical knowledge than FonF instruction. In addition, it suggests that even among older adult learners, age still matters. That is, “the younger, the better” applies to adult learners of age 40 and above.

Derivation of [XP-NUN?] Revisited: Reply to Park (2021). \u0000Studies in Modern Grammar 115, 51-76. Contra Chung’s (2021a) contrastive topic (CT) movement analysis of the so-called contrastive topic fragment (CTF) of the form [XP-NUN?], Park (2021) claims the following: (i) The pre-NUN remnant can be a contrastive focus (CF) (as well as a CT); (ii) the CTF is derived from a cleft-like wh-construction with ettehkey ‘how’ in the pivot; and (iii) the remnants undergo scrambling. This paper makes the following three points: (i) given the generally accepted definitions of topic, the pre-NUN element behaves like a CT, as suggested in Chung (2021a); (ii) Park’s cleft-like construction based derivation faces non-trivial problems, especially with respect to the available interpretation of the CTF; and (iii) Park’s generalized question [XP-NUN etteh/ettehkey ‘how’ ...?] can in fact be viewed as a derived structure due to a clausal replacement by etteh/ettehkey, analogous to the kuleh/kulehkey replacement entertained in Park (2013) and Sohn (2019).

A Corpus-Based Diachronic Investigation of the What About and How About Constructions. Studies in Modern Grammar 115, 77-117. This paper examines diachronic development patterns of the what about and how about constructions in American English, making use of authentic corpus data. Irregular wh-question constructions including the two, in general, have received much less attention than regular wh-question constructions and empirical studies on irregular wh-questions are scarce. In addition, previous literature has mainly focused on the similarities of the two constructions and has never discussed their diachronic development patterns. The findings of this corpus-based study show that the two constructions have undergone rather different development patterns for the past 200 years in American English. In particular, a fine-grained analysis of the diachronic development patterns of the two constructions based on their dependent categories reveals that it is worth investigating their diachronic properties about their preferred subtypes and illocutionary functions for each dependent category and that superficially similar distribution patterns indeed are statistically significantly different in most comparisons.
