To test it, nine of approximately 40 researchers in the Science and Technology Division have been relocated from the US West Advanced technologies headquarters in Englewood, Colorado, to Boulder, Colorado, a distance of some 40 miles. After an explanation of the technical infrastructure of the system and some of the choices made in building it, the authors discuss some of the problems encountered and some of the lessons learned from this experience. When dual-polarization transmission techniques are used, an efficiency of 9 b/Hz can be achieved and transmission of 270 Mb/s data in the 30-MHz bandwidth becomes possible. The features and configuration of a 64 QAM DMR transmission system using dual polarization are presented. It is concluded that, currently, the 64 QAM DMR with XPIC (cross-polarization interference cancellers) is the most feasible system from both the technical and economical viewpoints when a capacity of higher than 135 Mb/s is required.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":256305,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference, 1989, and Exhibition. The algorithm is modified to increase the performance, and a method is introduced to decode any RS code generated by any generator polynomial. The main advantage of the introduced decoder structure is the versatility. By a versatile decoder, the authors mean a decoder that can be programmed to decode any RS code defined in Galois field 2/sup m/ with a fixed symbol size m. This decoder can correct both errors and erasures for any RS code, including shortened and singly extended codes. COSMIC integrates and correlates network alarm information and graphically displays the network's status on a near-real-time basis. COSMIC has established the use of personal computers for network status monitoring. Its main capabilities are in the areas of real-time graphical displays for network management. Its features include a hierarchical graphical display of the network configuration, alarm correlation, and additional database referencing features. COSMIC provides a user-friendly and easy-to-use interface to the technicians in the NCC. The system has been deployed in the NCC for more than a year, and the efficiency of network management operations with the NCC has improved substantially. The mobiles use slotted ALOHA random access to send requests for channel assignments to a central station. For successful requests, the actual transmission of voice/data within a call is done using the channel assigned for this purpose by the central station. The satellite channel is assumed to be power limited. Taking into account the known burstiness of voice sources (which use a voice-activated switch), the central station overassigns channels so that the average total power is below the power limit of the satellite transponder. The performance of this model is analyzed. Maximum-likelihood detection of these schemes based on the Viterbi algorithm is described. The asymptotic gain is 3.01 dB for the two-state code, and 4.33 dB for the four- and eight-state codes which involve a smaller expansion of the uncoded signal alphabet. A comparison is made between proposed schemes and the conventional 2D TCM in terms of tradeoff between performance and detection complexity. It is shown that some of the proposed schemes have a significant advantage over 2D TCM. In this mode the transmitter is switched on when a user begins to talk and switched off again when he or she stops. There are two reasons for using DTX: to increase the number of radio channels (by 100% or more) which can be accommodated in a given bandwidth and to reduce the power drain in hand portable equipment. It is noted that, while adding little degradation to the speech channel and very little additional cost, the DTX will increase considerably the capacity of the system. This technique determines the upper bound of the mean packet transfer time in a class of regular mesh networks called Manhattan street networks. The proposed technique is based on determining the internode distance distribution and the topology z-transform for an ideal (i.e. where the links are of infinite capacity or the nodes are equipped with infinite buffer space) version of the network under consideration for a specific traffic distribution pattern. Deviations from the ideal conditions are taken into account by incorporating a tuning parameter and a penalty indicator in the performance equations. The value of the tuning parameter is zero for the ideal network. In order to be able to predict this transmission range, a considerable amount of experimental and theoretical work was required prior to the introduction of ISDN for a better understanding of the cross-talk and noise phenomena in these loops. The author summarizes NEXT measurement results and modeling methods and reports on impulse noise measurements and the statistical models derived from them. Detailed results of swept-frequency measurements in different cables are considered. Measurement results indicate considerable variation in the density of impulse noises within 24 h, a hyperbolic distribution, interval distribution according to the sum of exponential functions, and steadily increasing amplitude density below 40 kHz.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":256305,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference, 1989, and Exhibition. It is found that the introduction of SONET-based networks provides an ideal opportunity to reappraise protection methodologies and to improve customer circuit availability significantly. The authors propose techniques for achieving these aims by examining a whole network from customer to customer so that weak links in the chain can be identified.
