The received power ratio between a packet signal with minimum received power and an interference signal is considered as a criterion for the capture effect. It is revealed that, though the maximum overall throughput for a slotted ALOHA over Rayleigh fading channels is very vulnerable to AWGN for a single common-receiver case, pluralizing common receivers dramatically improves the overall throughput. Surprisingly, it has also been found that, even if the signal-to-noise ratio is as bad as 2.5 (dB), the instability of a slotted ALOHA over Rayleigh-fading channels is still much less serious than that over channels without capture. Diversity selection is performed by using a quality measure obtained from the demodulation process. This technique is compared to diversity selection based on power and diversity selection after channel decoding. It is found that this diversity selection technique is more effective in mitigating selective fading than a conventional technique based on power and that it performs almost as well as diversity selection after channel decoding. This diversity selection technique can be implemented at the portable handset by using only one receiver if the base station transmits in at least one time slot in addition to the communication slot. Thus, its use does not significantly increase the portable's hardware complexity. Simulations and experiments have confirmed that two-branch diversity using the proposed method can provide reliable speech communications using TDMA (time division multiple access) for a portable radio channel with RMS spread of 555 ns or less and a transmission rate of 450 kb/s.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":256305,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference, 1989, and Exhibition. The authors present a heuristic algorithm to sequentially place an arbitrary number of repeaters with the objective of maximizing the throughput of the resulting networks. The heuristic attempts to reduce the average number of hops that packets must be transmitted over, without increasing interference at the nodes. Even if the average number of hops is not reduced significantly, it creates a number of other paths (of the same length), and thus congestion is avoided. Results are presented for one particular protocol, code division multiple access with noise threshold theta . All procedures use a block of N+1 measurements to produce N data decisions. The motivation is to lessen the energy penalty associated with classical DPSK detection and to approach the performance of fully-coherent detection, but without complicated feedback phase-tracking circuitry and the associated phase-acquisition time. The authors formulate optimal (block) detection under the assumption of unknown carrier phase. Performance analysis and simulation show significant improvement with increasing blocklength, but complexity increases exponentially in blocklength. Suboptimal methods are then proposed which have far less complexity, but retain the improvement over standard DPSK. A simple closed-form expression for the probability of error is derived and evaluated for cases of practical interest to researchers and designers of land mobile radio systems. It is shown that the dynamic BER performance is considerably improved using the offset diversity scheme. The configurations of a satellite-terrestrial integrated network are classified into four basic forms. A new application of subscriber/transit integrated communication networks that combines the basic forms is proposed. With a new concept called virtual transit switching these networks can realize farthest-end routing without modifying the existing call control scheme for terrestrial networks. An ISDN-oriented, satellite dedicated network based on this concept is also proposed. The design drives were maximum flexibility and minimization of equipment weight, power, and dimensions. The video multiplexing system is designed to maintain asynchronous access to the link while preserving an internally synchronous structure. Reed-Solomon codes are used to obtain a practically error-free system with low overhead. Coder and decoder are able to work asynchronously. The selected coding algorithm is DCT based and allows a variable bit rate from 64 to 2048 kbit/s and also transmission of fixed images with full resolution. The coefficients of the DCTs are then zonal-sampled and vector quantized. The codebooks for the VQ are optimized by both the traditional Linde-Buzo-Gray (1980) method and by a simulated annealing (SA) algorithm. In addition a method of selective multistage VQ (SMVQ) is investigated in which only those vectors not matched well enough by a codebook vector are allowed a second stage of VQ. The method combines the adaptive predictive distortion criterion with the distortion measure used in the typical regular-pulse excitation system and reduces the degradation due to pulse amplitude quantization.
