A new modulation technique is proposed to ensure the zero-voltage-switching to be maintained. Comparison of the proposed method to other modulations and inverters is presented. Theoretical and experimental results are shown.","PeriodicalId":254764,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1999 International Conference on Power Electronics and Drive Systems. PEDS'99 (Cat. This is a new soft switching topology developed for three phase voltage source soft-switching inverter, active power filter and reactive power compensator has the significant advantage of current rating reduction for auxiliary active switching devices. In addition, this paper presents a novel prototype of voltage-source soft switching space vector-modulated inverter with ARCS mentioned above, which is more suitable and acceptable for high-power utility interactive power conditioning, along with a digital control scheme. The steady-state operating analysis of ARCS has the remarkable features and the practical design procedure of this resonant snubber are illustrated on the basis of computer simulation analysis. The operating performance evaluations in the steady-state of this three phase voltage source soft switching inverter are discussed and compared with the three phase voltage source hard switching inverter.","PeriodicalId":254764,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1999 International Conference on Power Electronics and Drive Systems. Because all classical converters consist of capacitors and inductors, they have big size and low power density. The switched-inductor has been successfully employed in DC/DC converters and opened the way to build the converters with high power density. For example, Professor John G. Kassakian of MIT designed a new power supply system for the future electric car in the 21st century (see IEEE Spectrum, p.22-7, 1996). The heart of this system is a two-quadrant DC/DC converter operating the conversion between +42 V and -14 VDC. In this paper the author discusses the operating modes of the converter and its control by neural nets.","PeriodicalId":254764,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1999 International Conference on Power Electronics and Drive Systems. By keeping the relations between faults and waveforms in a neural network, the neural network can be trained to detect faults. So automation of fault diagnosis can be realized. The purpose of voltage control is to instantaneously limit large overvoltage applied to certain IGBTs in inverter valves during switching transients and off-state IGBT voltages and to maintain the voltage to an acceptable level. The performance of the gate drive circuit is examined experimentally by the series connection of four different rated IGBTs with conventional snubber circuits. The experimental results show the voltage balancing by the voltage control with wide variations in imbalance conditions.","PeriodicalId":254764,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1999 International Conference on Power Electronics and Drive Systems. The proposed system consists of two sets of PV array and buck-boost type chopper circuit. However, the system has lower \"using rate\" of PV energy than that of the ordinary PV system, as each PV array is only operated in the half duration of the AC power frequency. In this paper, it is also discussed how to increase this \"using rate\" by varying the connected capacitor between PV array terminals. The simulation and experimental data show that the proposed inverter can supply the AC power to a utility grid line with the power factor nearly unity.","PeriodicalId":254764,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1999 International Conference on Power Electronics and Drive Systems. This paper describes the development of a circuit model, thermal model and cost model for a capacitor discharge impulse magnetizer and compares simulations to measurements from an actual system. Especially, the temperature computation of discharging circuits of an impulse magnetizer is very important since it gives some indication of the design of the magnetizing circuits. Also, the authors used a cost structure consisted of five major subsystems for cost modeling.","PeriodicalId":254764,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1999 International Conference on Power Electronics and Drive Systems. This leads to specifications for container crane drive systems to be very detailed. As a side effect of this, new technology only very reluctantly is accepted. The following paper summarizes the key aspects of crane drive system reliability in the light of most recent developments of drive technology. Most relevant is the maturing of field-oriented controlled AC drives. The main focus of the paper is on a comparison between DC and AC drive technology. For DC drives brushes and commutators are identified as the main reliability bottleneck. The sensitivity of the commutator-brush arrangement to various ambient conditions is explained. For AC drives their general characteristics are presented together with known restrictions in terms of motor winding insulation stress and the reliability impact of different AC infeeder configurations.","PeriodicalId":254764,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1999 International Conference on Power Electronics and Drive Systems. The authors have previously proposed the transmission power control using a variable inductance which can be realized by variable active passive reactance (VAPAR). The transmission power controlled by this variable inductance with feedforward-based power controller showed quick transient response, although there were slight transient oscillations. This paper, at first, describes a basic theory of the power control method using a variable inductance. Second, the concept of the power control method using variable inductance with a feedforward-based power controller is expressed. Simulations and experiments were carried out using the feedfoward-based power controller to verify the ability of this method. Then, the characteristics of the power control were analyzed for different line impedance by simulations. The results show that the transmission power can be quickly controlled using variable inductance with the feedfoward-based power controller in the case with a small line resistance, while transient oscillation is observed in the transmission power when a line is rather large. Third, a new transmission power control using a variable inductance with a power feedback-based controller is proposed, which can be applied to a power system with large line resistance. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified by simulations. The transient response of the transmission power can be greatly improved using the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":254764,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1999 International Conference on Power Electronics and Drive Systems.
