However, identifying common practices across different applications is still challenging. In this paper, we use smart parking as a case study to investigate features of crowdsourcing that may apply to other mobile applications. Based on this we derive principles for efficiently harnessing crowdsourcing. We draw three key guidelines: First, we suggest that that the organizer can play an important role in coordinating participants', a key factor to successful crowdsourcing experience. Second, we suggest that the expected participation rate is a key factor when designing the crowdsourcing system: a system with a lower expected participation rate will place a higher burden in individual participants (e.g., through more complex interfaces that aim to improve the accuracy of the collected data). Finally, we suggest that not only above certain threshold of contributors, a crowdsourcing-based system is resilient to freeriding but, surprisingly, that including freeriders (i.e., actors that do not participate in system effort but share its benefits in terms of coordination) benefits the entire system.","PeriodicalId":254708,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the second ACM international symposium on Design and analysis of intelligent vehicular networks and applications","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134016172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study starts with the analysis of the different communications standards that are expected to link the IV to mobile devices inside the vehicle, other IVs in the ITS network, the road side unites and the existing wireless infrastructures into three types namely, Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC), Wide Area Network (WAN) and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). An adaptive communication gateway architecture is devised to support Multimode Multiband (MMMB) operation. This architecture accounts for the need for concurrent operation of multiple communication links and address the different challenges proper to the ITS applications","PeriodicalId":254708,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the second ACM international symposium on Design and analysis of intelligent vehicular networks and applications","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121800332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This approach is useful for planning algorithms utilizing data from vehicular networks, for example. These algorithms may be robust to some data staleness and this robustness can be used to save energy. Our model relies on the statistical distribution of user queries depending on which we develop sensor sampling schedules while optimizing system cost. For Poisson arrivals of user queries, we develop an optimal data sampling strategy which samples the network at regular intervals. For hyper-exponential query inter arrivals, we discuss methods to find an optimal sampling strategy. We show that optimal strategies can be discovered using dynamic programming techniques but the process is highly computational. Due to this reason, we suggest suboptimal sampling strategies which are nearly as efficient as the optimal strategy. We carefully design the cost function for the sensing system such that it is truly representative of most platforms we want to optimize for. Our model is generic and can be used to model any system that aggregates information which is then queried in real-time by users.","PeriodicalId":254708,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the second ACM international symposium on Design and analysis of intelligent vehicular networks and applications","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133003066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For such a purpose, we propose HyDi, a data dissemination protocol suited for highway scenarios. HyDi can seamless operate under well-connected networks by applying broadcast suppression techniques in order to avoid contention at the link layer, and also at intermittent connected networks by applying store-carry-forward techniques, thus delivering messages even when there is no end-to-end path. By means of simulation using the recently defined IEEE 802.11p standard, we compare HyDi against the only two existing solutions in the literature --- DV-CAST and SRD --- and we show that HyDi has an overhead as good as DV-CAST, outperforms both protocols when considering the average delay under heavy traffic scenarios, decreases the average number of hops to deliver messages and can deliver data to almost all nodes in a given region of interest.","PeriodicalId":254708,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the second ACM international symposium on Design and analysis of intelligent vehicular networks and applications","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124599963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we have addressed this problem by introducing a novel approach based on the idea of cooperative localization. Our proposed scheme incorporates different techniques of localization along with data fusion as well as vehicle-to-vehicle communication, to integrate the available data and cooperatively improve the accuracy of the localization information of the vehicles. The simulation results show that sharing the localization information and deploying that of the neighboring vehicles, not only can assure the vehicles in a vicinity to obtain more accurate localization information, but also find the results robust to sensor inaccuracies or even to failures.","PeriodicalId":254708,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the second ACM international symposium on Design and analysis of intelligent vehicular networks and applications","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123425139","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such systems provide safe environments on roads as they notify vehicles about congestions, accidents, and dangerous situations. VANETs facilitate broadcasting and geocasting notification messages among vehicles for the purpose of distributing important information among them. Mining and querying VANET is a key challenging task due to the spatial nature and huge amount of the information collected from the VANET's field. This paper adopts a modified version of STING (STatistical INformation Grid [1]) for building a grid-based spatial structure for storing the data collected from VANETs. The modified structure will allow an efficient querying and mining for interesting knowledge and patterns regarding vehicles and road conditions, as of the proposed framework implements a third dimension to represent time.","PeriodicalId":254708,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the second ACM international symposium on Design and analysis of intelligent vehicular networks and applications","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129312885","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent researches have suggested the use of a set of anonymous keys certified by the issuing CA (Central authority) to preserve privacy, authentication, and confidentiality of the communicating entities. But how to determine the right time for the vehicles to exchange their communication pseudonyms and what would be the impacts on the network resources such as time processing and memory. In this paper, we propose a protocol that preserves authentication, non repudiation, and location privacy and helps vehicles to exchange their pseudonyms at roughly the same time. It is based on calculating the Euclidean distance and the average of the speed permitted on the path to evaluate the lifetime of the communication's pseudonyms. The exchange of the information is based on asymmetric and symmetric cryptography scheme and it uses hash function. The protocol permits to determine the expiration time of pseudonyms and how to make the distribution of all the road side units along the road in order to establish a good communication between them and the vehicles.","PeriodicalId":254708,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the second ACM international symposium on Design and analysis of intelligent vehicular networks and applications","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130182453","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the key characteristics of vehicular networks is the high intermittent connectivity. Recent studies have investigated and proven the feasibility of a content-centric networking paradigm for vehicular networks. Content-centric information dissemination has a potential number of applications in vehicular networking, including advertising, traffic and parking notifications and emergency announcements. It is clear and evident that knowledge about the type of content and its relevance can enhance the performance of data dissemination in VANETs. In this paper we address the problem of information dissemination in vehicular network environments and propose a model and solution based on a content-centric approach of networking. We leverage the expansion properties of interacting nodes in a cluster to be interpreted in terms of social connections among nodes and perform a selective random network coding approach. We compare the reliability performance of our method with a conventional random network coding approach and comment on the complexity of the proposed solution.","PeriodicalId":254708,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the second ACM international symposium on Design and analysis of intelligent vehicular networks and applications","volume":"163 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127801865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Qualities of Service policies have been used to improve the performance of VANET. One of the significant parameters in Quality of Service is Congestion Control. The congestion control is used to ensure safe and reliable communication architecture. Three types of strategies are available for congestion control which consists of transmission power control, packet transmission frequently control and packet duration. Heuristic techniques can be used to define heuristic rules and finding feasible and good enough solution to some problems in reasonable time. According to heuristic's benefits, we are motivated to use these techniques in congestion control to generate efficient VANET. This work is aimed to improve congestion control with heuristic techniques to reduce the traffic communication channels while considering reliability requirements of applications in VANETs. The simulation results have demonstrated that meta-heuristic techniques features significantly better performance in terms of packet loss, throughput and delay compared with other congestion control algorithm within VANETs.","PeriodicalId":254708,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the second ACM international symposium on Design and analysis of intelligent vehicular networks and applications","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130867544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
