The characteristics of nanostructures are strongly influenced by the properties of the interfaces, such as roughness, surface defects, or adsorbed charges, so a major challenge in predicting the properties of nanostructures lies precisely in capturing the complex interplay between the confined particle states and the surface condition. In this paper, I review some recent successful applications of ensemble Monte Carlo - an efficient and versatile transport simulation technique - to predict the properties and optimize the design of a wide range of realistic semiconductor nanostructures, from quantum cascade lasers to electronic devices and thermoelectrics.","PeriodicalId":254587,"journal":{"name":"10th IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116854295","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unreliable electrical contact and tip wear are the primary challenges for electrical characterization at the nanometer scale. The experiments show that force modulation reduces tip wear by a factor of three and enhances electrical contact between tip and sample, which allows operation at lower loading force and further reduction of tip and sample wear. Long-term wear experiments with platinum silicide tips on phase change media (Ge8Sb2Te11) show a nine and two times higher conductance for loading forces of 10 and 20 nN, respectively. The proposed technique could be of significant importance in applications such as probe storage and metrology, as long-term, reliable conduction in C-AFM remains a challenge.","PeriodicalId":254587,"journal":{"name":"10th IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127144486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, a 3-D hydrogel matrix of DNA has been manufactured at macroscopic scale[2] for biomedical applications as an extra-cellular matrix and a cell-free protein amplification platform[3]. To explore DNA hydrogel in a microscopic level, we report a novel method to produce DNA nanogel enclosed by a lipid vesicle. Nano-sized DNA hydrogels have been simply prepared by mixing precursors with DOPC lipid components under repeated sonications, following by nanometer filtering. After peeling off outer lipids using a lipid-chaotropic reagent (Triton X-100), we observe uniform nanogels entirely composed of DNA. With increasing the amount of DOPC lipids, the size of DNA nanogel has decreased. Our theoretical model based on equilibrium thermodynamics predicts such trend consistent with experiments. It indicates that DOPC lipid molecules energetically interfere with crosslink mechanisms among DNA units. DNA nanogel of well-controlled size may be incorporated with functional multi-modules and further applied to novel and advanced technological tools for in vivo diagnostics or therapeutics in preventive medicines.","PeriodicalId":254587,"journal":{"name":"10th IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126194586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Further, a barrel shifter that can shift and rotate multiple bits in a single cycle forms the essence of many computing systems. In this paper, we propose an efficient architecture and design of a reversible ternary barrel shifter. The ternary barrel shifter is realized using the Modified Fredkin gates (MFG) and the ternary Feynman gates. The design is evaluated in terms of quantum cost, the number of garbage outputs and the number of ancilla bits. To our knowledge, the use of multiple valued reversible logic for the design of a barrel shifter is being attempted for the first time in the literature.","PeriodicalId":254587,"journal":{"name":"10th IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125364705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a novel approach for the design of CMOS logic gates which aims to simultaneously decrease their power consumption and their probabilities of failure. This new sizing method was evaluated on CMOS inverters and NOR-2 gates at three technology nodes: 16nm, 22nm, and 32nm. The new inverters and NOR-2 were compared to the classic gates. The results show that the new gates have significantly lower power and higher reliability when compared to classic CMOS gates. The results also suggest that the advantages of the new design method are enhanced at smaller feature sizes: at 16nm the new gates outperform the classic ones in reliability, power, and PDP.","PeriodicalId":254587,"journal":{"name":"10th IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116463392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tunneling is allowed only between paired lead eigenstates linked to each other via an imaginary wavevector in the forbidden gap. Following Kane's tunneling theory, we believe that the tunneling for typical semiconductor materials is associated with the coupling between the s and p atomic orbitals, similar to the selection rule for optical transitions. The tunneling efficiencies for both homojunctions and heterojunctions are compared to select optimal materials.","PeriodicalId":254587,"journal":{"name":"10th IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128264279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although activation method can increase surface area and pore sizes, the mass loss and energy consumption must be needed. We propose the new route to adjust the micropores and the mesopores of carbon cryogels by using thermal processing during the carbon gel preparation. The two thermal processings, hydrothermal and acidic-thermal, are utilized and the porous properties of treated carbon cryogels are observed. The results demonstrate that these two thermal processings can tune the micropore sizes and mesopore sizes. The tunable condition should be optimized.","PeriodicalId":254587,"journal":{"name":"10th IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129268044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The length scale of the CNT has the definite influence on the internal structures of percolation networks, affecting the characteristics complex permittivity of the composites. In a Dällenbach type radar absorber made of a dielectric composite, the optimal thickness of lossy layer is dependent on the characteristics of complex permittivity. In this work, radar absorbers composed of E-glass composite laminates with CNTs of different length scales were developed in X-band. The design result demonstrates the influence of the CNT length on complex permittivity of composite laminates and on microwave absorber characteristics.","PeriodicalId":254587,"journal":{"name":"10th IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129308684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A micro-scale analysis system for blood allows immediate diagnosis, regardless of time or location. Rapid handling of target cells is required for accurate analysis because WBCs are easily altered during cell separation. In previous papers, the reported sample solution flow rates for cell sorting were on the order of tens of micro-liters per minute. This paper proposes a hybrid cell sorter (HCS) that combines hydrodynamics and magnetophoresis. The HCS is proposed for improving the classification efficiency of a virtual impactor-based cell sorter. Also, its performance has been evaluated in the classification of blood cells. The overall classification efficiency of red blood cells (RBCs) increased from 68.26% to 88.63% when using the proposed hybrid scheme. Experimental results show that the classification efficiency of blood cells could be modulated and enhanced by magnetophoresis.","PeriodicalId":254587,"journal":{"name":"10th IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124576053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
