While the intrinsic structure of the holon is responsible for its autonomy and individualistic skills, the cooperation architecture outlines how interactions between holons can be organised and supported. The paper also illustrates how this architecture can be mapped onto a holonic production environment using a motor assembly scenario. Even though the motor assembly test case has a hierarchical task structure, we believe it is rigorous enough to demonstrate the benefits of the holonic operational behaviour.","PeriodicalId":254550,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 13th International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126561506","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In such systems agents/holons interact to assemble products, using preferences on things like assemblers, end times and so on. We show how to derive a preference-based solution in presence of contention where awarding preferences to the solution of one task can only be done by removing preferences from that of another task. The model can trade preferences in a \"fairly competitive\" market, enforce timely termination and produce a \"reasonable\" solution that satisfies the preferences. We have implemented the preference model using a manufacturing example under Java. In this paper we present the results obtained from this implementation.","PeriodicalId":254550,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 13th International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126231731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is true for all sorts of auctions in the electronic business areas consumer-to-consumer (C2C), business-to-consumer (B2C), and business-to-business (B2B). Especially for many situations in the B2B area there are other important attributes apart from price to be considered for decision making. Therefore the area of multi-attribute auctions gains more and more interest in the scientific community as well as from software vendors of electronic business products. But the approaches offered so far suffer from some limitations. Theoretical approaches are not applicable to (B2B) real world scenarios, commercial software does not cover all situations. To overcome these limitations we developed a practical approach to multi-attribute auctions, that is presented in this paper.","PeriodicalId":254550,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 13th International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications","volume":"137 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131512286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system at first gathers Web pages related to the query 'call for paper' with a search engine and filters out pages irrelevant to the query with SVMs. Next it extracts the topics of conferences and clusters them. Each cluster embodies the relationships between topics and between topics and conferences. The clustered topics are shown through an Explorer-like graphical user interface. The preliminary experimental results promise that the method works not only for obtaining the relationship between topics of conferences, but also for discovering the relationship between any information entities users are interested in.","PeriodicalId":254550,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 13th International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131105193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such data may contain a large number of outliers, which degrade the performance of Euclidean and time warping distance. Therefore, we propose the use of non-metric distance functions based on the longest common subsequence (LCSS), in conjunction with a sigmoidal matching function. Finally, we compare these new methods to various L/sub p/ norms and also to time warping distance (for real and synthetic data) and present experimental results that validate the accuracy and efficiency of our approach, especially in the presence of noise.","PeriodicalId":254550,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 13th International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127223338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose and discuss several route structures and methods for mobile agents that are dispatched in parallel. These schemes can protect the route information against malicious hosts and facilitate the dispatching of a large number of agents in parallel efficiently. Under non-collusion attacks, these methods expose minimal addresses to a host for dispatching other mobile agents. Moreover, they can detect possible attacks as early as possible and enforce the predefined dispatch order.","PeriodicalId":254550,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 13th International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127394221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed method incorporates user relevance feedback information and original document similarity information into the retrieval model that is built using a sequence of linear transformations. High-dimensional and sparse vectors are mapped into the a low-dimensional vector space, namely the space representing the latent semantic meanings of words, by using SPCA (simple principal component analysis). An experimental information retrieval system based on the proposed method has been built. Experiments on the Medline collection and Cranfield collection have been carried out. Improved average precision compared with the LSI (latent semantic indexing) model, are 6.80% (Medline) and 67.46% (Cranfield) for the two training data sets, and 4.71% (Medline) and 8.12% (Cranfield) for the test data, respectively. The results of our experiments show that the proposed method has better retrieval performance and provides an approach that makes it possible to preserve user-supplied relevance information in the long term in the system in order to use it later.","PeriodicalId":254550,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 13th International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124303532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the world of unstructured data composed of images and other media types, classification often comes at the price of countless hours of manual labor. This research aims to present a scalable system capable of examining images and accurately classifying the image based on its visual content. When retrieving images based on a user's query, the system yields a minimal amount of irrelevant information (high precision) and ensures a maximum amount of relevant information (high recall).","PeriodicalId":254550,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 13th International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124569683","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The obvious strategy of purely synchronous remote method invocation can result in a bottleneck when applied to a multi-layer application (e.g., when application logic is isolated from data sources). The effect is apparent in Java technologies and necessitates a suitable solution. This contribution deals with the effectiveness of Java and Java-CORBA remote method invocation. Standard approaches are compared with asynchronous communication support developed in the frame of standard Java RMI. Real-time behaviour of different mechanisms (and primarily of asynchronous RMI) has been evaluated on the system developed for middleware testing.","PeriodicalId":254550,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 13th International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications","volume":"238 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114427293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the system requirement enforces us to choose an open standard platform, and we think that Java has matured enough to offer acceptable performance and reliability, we decide to implement it by Java. Basically, this training simulator is a distributed interactive application, and lots of messages are exchanged within it. For the performance reason, we use an IP-multicast-based Java message service (JMS) implementation as the communication infrastructure for delivering time-critical events. In this paper, we present how to exploit the capability of the JMS publish/subscribe paradigm to implement this training simulator. Besides, we also perform a set of experiments to test and verify whether the training simulator can meet the system requirement. We think the experience of this paper is a good case study of using Java and message-oriented middleware to build message-intensive distributed systems.","PeriodicalId":254550,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 13th International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122169054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
