The discussion covers the development of hardened concrete properties and classes of deterioration. The lecture concludes with the following guidelines for obtaining the performance that is desired of concrete in transportation: (1) Decide what sorts and levels of imperfections are tolerable and intolerable; (2) Understand what causes imperfections that are intolerable; (3) Evaluate the environment in which the concrete is to serve to recognize the presence of influences that must be resisted if the concrete is to perform as desired; (4) Prepare concrete specifications that require appropriate levels of relevant properties of concrete so that the concrete can resist the deteriorative influences it will encounter in service; and (5) Ascertain that both the contractor's quality control and the owner's quality assurance systems work to ensure that the concrete produced is as specified.","PeriodicalId":253577,"journal":{"name":"SP-223: Investigating Concrete-Selected Works of Bryant and Katharine Mather","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131572119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, what is needed to more fully realize its potential as a construction material is to understand what we want it to do, learn how to make it so it will do so, use available methods to restrict undesired variability, consider the ethical and environmental aspects of its use, and help the people who are making it to do better.","PeriodicalId":253577,"journal":{"name":"SP-223: Investigating Concrete-Selected Works of Bryant and Katharine Mather","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132587180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

IT WAS NOTED IN 1947 THAT CRACKS HAD DEVELOPED IN THE LOCK WALLS. A BOARD OF CONSULTANTS WAS APPOINTED, AND THE MEMBERS OF THE BOARD EXAMINED THE STRUCTURE AND RECOMMENDED THAT THE CONCRETE RESEARCH DIVISION, WATERWAYS EXPERIMENT STATION, CONDUCT A STUDY TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE CRACKING. THE DATA DEVELOPED ARE SUMMARIZED AND DISCUSSED. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE CRACKING RESULTED FROM A CHEMICAL REACTION BETWEEN THE ALKALIES IN THE CEMENT AND UNSTABLE SILICA IN THE AGGREGATE. The paper describes the differences in the procedures used which depend on the nature of the sample submitting for testing and the purpose of the examination. Suggestions are also made concerning the features to be delineated, the amount of material to be examined, and the organization and presentation of the results of the examination. The goal of this paper is that the information will clarify the concept of what is meant by petrographic examination of aggregates and ultimately contribute to greater uniformity of these examinations.","PeriodicalId":253577,"journal":{"name":"SP-223: Investigating Concrete-Selected Works of Bryant and Katharine Mather","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130012967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
