In this paper we will explain in detail the design, implementation and performance evaluation of a sparse WSN that has been working maintenance-free for over 12 months. The network has been designed for environmental monitoring purposes, and several motes, attached to lampposts, accurately measure the Temperature and Relative Humidity at various locations in a local street. Our contribution is an enhanced data gathering application for environmental applications. We will present the different arguments and tradeoffs to be taken into account when designing a network of this type, such as the type of sensors and their calibration, choice of mote and operating system, power supply, special housing required for the mote, data sampling frequency, requirements for the data sink, the structure of the database at the central site, and different issues relating to the exploitation of the meteorological results. We show that a reliable, low cost WSN deployment for environmental monitoring that takes into account the main properties of these networks, such multi-hop routing, low maintenance, low cost and long mote lifetimes, is achievable.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126768172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The DTBS technique enables a beacon enabled coordinator to calculate its time schedule to transmit beacons, thus avoiding potential collisions, without the need of a central coordinator. The proposed DDCM strategy is able to re-configure, in an IEEE802.15.4 beacon-enabled wireless mesh sensor network, nodes' duty cycle based only on locally available network information. DDCM features the allocation, deallocation and reallocation of superframe slots as well as the prevention and resolution of slot conflicts within a mesh network in a distributed fashion. The feasibility of our proposal is demonstrated and evaluated through network simulations. The proposed DDCM algorithm shows low slot collision probability and better energy efficiency than current state-of-the-art approaches.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122344297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider scalable video streaming and download services offered by eMBMS service over LTE networks. We propose an effective and practical solution to jointly optimize user experience and power consumption in both UE and eNodeB. To perform power efficient multimedia transmission in LTE networks, we face three key trade-offs: (1) maximizing energy saving vs. minimizing delay, (2) maximizing sleep time vs. minimizing lost packets, (3) maximizing quality of video vs. minimizing unnecessary video transmissions. We provide a balanced solution that addresses the trade-off by including user preference. Our simulation results indicate 5% to 18% improvement in base station power consumption and 13% to 25% improvement in UE power conservation chances. The provided solution also decreases the transmitted data in the network while preserving the user perceived quality of the video. Data of unprecedented quantity and quality can be collected and reported by a possible user base of billions of mobile phone subscribers worldwide. The collection of detailed sensor and location data may however compromise user privacy. In this paper, we present a decentralized mechanism to preserve location privacy during the collection of sensor readings. As most sensor readings are geotagged, we propose to exchange them between users in physical proximity in order to jumble the paths followed by the users. We evaluate different strategies to exchange and report the sensor readings to the application using real-world GPS traces of mobile users. The results demonstrate the feasibility and efficacy of our proposed scheme, which can obfuscate up to 100% of the visited locations in the best instances.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133270532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In such environments, high packet drop rates lead to frequent retransmissions and increased energy consumption of resource-restricted wireless nodes. To overcome this, we propose a novel Forward Error Correction (FEC) based adaptive error control strategy that employs a cascaded fuzzy inference system to combat communication unreliability. The strategy unifies various heterogeneous metrics such as signal-to-noise ratio, line-of-sight/non-line-of-sight detection and ACK/NACK to closely estimate the low-power links' quality and based on that, selects an appropriate FEC code to protect packet transmissions. Numerical evaluations are carried out using a realistic indoor fading channel model and IEEE 802.15.4 2.4 GHz modulation format. The performance results obtained from a comparative analysis with static and Adaptive FEC Code Control schemes (AFECCC) conclude that the proposed adaptive scheme guarantees better trade-off (packet error rate and energy-efficiency) for indoor WSN applications.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"518 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133761900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In low-power wireless systems, power-efficiency is determined by the ability to maintain a low radio duty cycle: keeping the radio off as much as possible. We present an implementation of the IETF Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) for the Contiki operating system that leverages the ContikiMAC low-power duty cycling mechanism to provide power efficiency. We experimentally evaluate our low-power CoAP, demonstrating that an existing application layer protocol can be made power-efficient through a generic radio duty cycling mechanism. To the best of our knowledge, our CoAP implementation is the first to provide power-efficient operation through radio duty cycling. Our results question the need for specialized low-power mechanisms at the application layer, instead providing low-power operation only at the radio duty cycling layer.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131869286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lau","doi":"10.1109/MASS.2011.28","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/MASS.2011.28","url":null,"abstract":"In cognitive radio networks, the occupation patterns of the primary users can be very dynamic, which makes optimization (e.g., utility maximization) of data dissemination among secondary users difficult. Even under the assumption that all secondary users are fully collaborative, the optimization requires cross-layer decision making which is challenging. The challenge escalates if users are socially selfish, who prefer to relay data only to those other users with whom there are social ties. Such social selfishness of users translates into new constraints on network protocol design. There has been no study so far on the impact of social selfishness on data dissemination in cognitive radio networks. In this paper, we consider social selfishness of secondary users, and propose the design of a joint end-to-end rate control, routing, and channel allocation protocol which can maximize the overall throughput utility of multi-session unicast in cognitive radio networks. We give a distributed implementation of the protocol. Based on a Lyapunov optimization framework, we address social preferences of users using differentiated buffer sizes and relay rates for different data sessions, and apply back-pressure based transmission scheduling to achieve guaranteed utility optimality. A unique contribution of our Lyapunov optimization is that only a finite-sized buffer is required at each user node, which sets our design apart from other designs in existing literature where they assume infinite buffers. We investigate the the optimality of our protocol and the impact of user social selfishness using both theoretical analysis and extensive simulations.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"181 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115887520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Proximity malware, which exploits the temporal dimension and distributed nature of DTNs in self-propagation, poses threats to users of new technologies. In this paper, we address the proximity malware detection and containment problem with explicit consideration for the unique characteristics of DTNs. We formulate the malware detection process as a decision problem under a general behavioral malware characterization framework. We analyze the risk associated with the decision problem and design a simple yet effective malware containment strategy, look-ahead, which is distributed by nature and reflects an individual node's intrinsic trade-off between staying connected (with other nodes) and staying safe (from malware). Furthermore, we consider the benefits of sharing assessments among directly connected nodes and address the challenges derived from the DTN model to such sharing in the presence of liars (i.e., malicious nodes sharing false assessments) and defectors (i.e., good nodes that have turned malicious due to malware infection). Real mobile network traces are used to verify our analysis.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129804842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a novel DeteRministic bEAcon Mobility Scheduling (DREAMS) algorithm, without requiring any prior knowledge of the sensory field. In this algorithm, beacon trajectory is defined as the track of depth-first traversal (DFT) of the network graph, thus deterministic. The mobile beacon performs DFT under the instruction of nearby sensors on the fly. It moves from sensor to sensor in an intelligent heuristic manner according to RSS (Received Signal Strength)-based distance measurements. We prove that DREAMS guarantees full localization (every sensor is localized) when the measurements are noise-free. Then we suggest to apply node elimination and topology control (Local Minimum Spanning Tree) to shorten beacon tour and reduce delay. Through simulation we show that DREAMS guarantees full localization even with noisy distance measurements. We evaluate its performance on localization delay and communication overhead in comparison with a previously proposed static path based scheduling method.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128443027","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
