However, due to the sensibility of GPS signals to terrain, vehicles cannot get their locations when they are inside a tunnel or on a road surrounded by high-rises where the satellite signal is blocked. This incurs the safety and convenience problems. To address the issue, we propose a novel Grid-based On-road localizaTion system (GOT), where vehicles with or without accurate GPS signals self-organize into a vehicular ad hoc network (VANET), exchange location and distance information and help each other to calculate an accurate position for all the vehicles inside the network. GOT uniquely evaluates some fuzzy geometric relationship among vehicles and employs a grid-based approach to calculate vehicle's locations, by which GOT solves the issues of lack of beacon nodes and error propagation that are the two major challenges in on-road localization. Simulation shows our GOT system is very effective and efficient in calculating the vehicular positions.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131639320","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we study anypath routing in wireless networks with directional antennas, and propose DART (Directional Anypath RouTing), a crosslayer design of MAC and routing layers. For the routing layer, we propose two shortest directional anypath routing algorithms based on two antenna models. Our routing algorithms are simple and fast, thus are suitable for implementation in practical protocols. For the MAC layer, we present a directional anycast MAC, which is an enhancement to the IEEE 802.11 MAC, making DART suitable for integration into current systems. Simulation results show that DART can significantly reduce the packet transmission delay.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"71 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133087410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The performance of data collection can be measured by its achievable emph{network capacity}. However, most existing works focus on the network capacity of emph{unicast}, emph{multicast} or/and emph{broadcast}, which are different communication modes from data collection, especially continuous data collection. In this paper, we study the emph{Snapshot/Continuous Data Collection} (SDC/CDC) problem under the Physical Interference Model (PhIM) for randomly deployed dense WSNs. For SDC, we propose a emph{Cell-Based Path Scheduling} (CBPS) algorithm based on network partitioning. Theoretical analysis shows that its achievable network capacity is $Omega(W)$ ($W$ is the data transmitting rate, emph{i.e.} bandwidth, over a channel), which is order-optimal. For CDC, we propose a novel emph{Segment-Based Pipeline Scheduling} (SBPS) algorithm that significantly speeds up the CDC process, and achieves a surprising network capacity, which is at least $sqrt{frac{n}{log n}}$ or $frac{n}{log n}$ times better than the current best result.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130790256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we study the constrained relay node placement problem in an energy harvesting network. In such a network, it is imperative that the placement be energy harvesting aware, because the more energy the placed nodes can harvest the more effective the network can be. In our study, the RNs are constrained to be placed at only the candidate locations, where the energy harvesting potential of the locations are known a priori. Our aim is to place a minimum number of relay nodes, to achieve connectivity or survivability, while ensuring that the relay nodes harvest large amounts of ambient energy. For both the connectivity and survivability, we study the problems, prove that they are NP-hard, and propose polynomial time O(1)approximation algorithms with low approximation ratios. We also validate the effectiveness and efficiency of our algorithms through simulations and show that the RNs placed by our algorithms harvest 50% more energy on average, in comparison to those placed by the algorithms unaware of energy harvesting.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123901717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While they can lead to better user experiences, given privacy concerns and hardware constraints, a mobile user often exposes a limited number of locations only. We are thus interested in the Trajectory Exposure Problem in this context, i.e., to what degree that the user's trajectory (i.e., its route) is exposed? Furthermore, can the user adaptively control the exposure of its trajectory and yet offer useful information for location-based services? In this paper, we explore Gaussian Process Regression, an effective tool to re-construct the trajectory of the mobile user with selected exposed locations. We examine how the re-constructed trajectory differs from the real trajectory, i.e., evaluating the exposure rate. We present an effective heuristic that adaptively controls the trajectory exposure rate by carefully choosing the exposed locations. We further demonstrate a practical routing protocol, MoRPTE, which, controlled by a single parameter, utilizes location information flexibly and adaptively in the spectrum from zero knowledge to full knowledge to fit the applications' demands.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124085137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In three years, mobile data traffic in AT&T's network rose 5000%. The US operators invest $50 billion in the data networks every year and the technology upgrades and innovation still fail to keep up with the demand. In this paper we design two algorithms for delay-tolerant offloading of bulky, socially recommended content from 3G networks. The first one, called \"MixZones\", uses opportunistic, ad hoc transfers between users, and is assisted by predictions made by the network operator. The second one, called \"HotZones\", exploits delay tolerance and tries to download contents when users are close to Wi-Fi access points; it is also assisted by predictions made by the operator. We evaluate both algorithms using a large data set, obtained from a major mobile operator and a realistic application similar to Apple's Ping music social network. The metrics address the amount of offloading, delay and mobile energy efficiency. We find that both solutions succeed in offloading a significant amount of traffic, with a positive impact on user battery lifetime. Surprisingly, we also find that all the benefit obtained from the operator with the MixZones algorithm (i.e with ad hoc exchanges between users) can be achieved with the HotZones algorithm and a small investment in Wi-Fi access points. Note that the latter is considerably less complex to deploy than the former.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128239984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work aims to minimize energy cost when distributed data fusion is deployed for Active Networks computing paradigm. An approximate solution with much less computational complexity than optimal solution is proposed for large networks called P2lace, which includes two phases, task graph partition and task graph placement. An extensive experimental evaluation compares approximate solution with optimal solution. The results show that our approximate solution is scalable to different task graph characteristics and network size and only causes little more transmission cost than optimal solution.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129991657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It allows the system-level performance evaluation (e.g., packet transmission and energy consumption) with elaborate models of sensor nodes. IDEA1 uses a clock-based synchronization mechanism to support simulations with cycle accurate communication and approximate time computation. Its accuracy has been validated by a testbed of 9 nodes. The average deviation between the IDEA1 simulations and experimental measurements is 5.9%. The performances of IDEA1 have also been compared with NS-2, one of the most widely used simulators in WSN research. To provide a similar result (deviation less than 5%) at the same abstraction level, the simulation of IDEA1 is 2 times faster than NS-2. By using existing cross domain open standards in contrast of proprietary solutions, technologies and deployments are not tailored too tight for specific applications. Nevertheless, 6LoWPAN is only the first step. Still efforts on higher layers on top of 6LoWPAN are an urgent need to provide the seamless connectivity and interaction of highly resource constrained devices with higher valued applications and services. This paper describes a new approach to bind SOAP to the emerging Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) protocol. Thereby, CoAP provides a lightweight but reliable transport binding for SOAP. Compared to the widespread TCP based HTTP binding, round trip times can be reduced by 43% in an exemplary scenario because of the omitted expensive bidirectional TCP handshake mechanisms. Combined with dedicated XML compressors like EXI, SOAP based protocols become also applicable in WSNs.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128860491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
