Seaweb interconnects the underwater nodes through digital signal processing (DSP)-based modem by using acoustic links between the neighbouring sensors. In this paper, we design and investigate a global positioning system (GPS)-free passive localization protocol using seaweb technology. This protocol uses the range data and planar trigonometry to estimate the positions of the discovered nodes. We take into consideration the small displacement of sensor nodes due to watch circles and placement of sensor nodes on non-uniform underwater surface, for precise localization. Once the nodes are localized, we divide the whole network field into circular levels that minimizes the traffic complexity and thereby increases the lifetime of the sensor network field. We then form the mesh network inside each of the circular levels that increases the reliability. The algorithm is designed in such a way that it overcomes the ambiguous nodes errata and reflected paths and makes the algorithm more robust. The synthetic network geometries are so designed which can evaluate the algorithm in the presence of perfect or imperfect ranges or in case of incomplete data. A comparative study is made with the existing algorithms which proves our newly proposed algorithm to be more effective.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128299809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Itaipu hydroelectric dam creates a unique scenario for the development of this type of WSN with more than 200 square kilometers of natural forests. In this context, FLORA project is aimed at developing a habitat monitoring WSN to be deployed in the Zoo of Itaipu and in the Tati Yupi Biological Refuge. The deployment includes more that 50 nodes. The paper describes the two scenarios of this ambitious and challenging application and presents the routing and topology control protocol developed in the framework of FLORA. The protocol was designed to fulfil the requirements of the application, extend the lifetime of the network, and to adapt to continuous nodes deployment and potential failures. It is based in several protocols already reported in the literature. The novel proposal is a reliable and lightweight routing protocol for wireless sensor network based on vector distance, collection tree, and energy aware distance vector protocols. The main idea is that each node of the network finds the shortest path to the sink with the best link quality, in order to guarantee the delivery of data to the sink despite the dynamic and lossy nature of wireless transmissions. The functionality of this novel protocol is presented as well as the results based on a TinyOS implementation and traditional WSN nodes (motes) including a CC2420 radio.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127264081","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The IPv6 over Low power Wireless Personal Area Networks (6LoWPAN) standard enables the use of IPv6 in networks of constrained devices. 6LowPAN enables the use of Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) in WSN. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has defined the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP), a web transfer protocol which provides several Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) functionalities, re-designed for constrained embedded devices. CoAP allows WSN applications to be built on top of Representational State Transfer (REST) architectures. This considerably eases the IoT application development and facilitates the integration of constrained devices with the Web. This work describes the prototype design and development of a Web platform which integrates a REST/CoAP WSN with a REST/HTTP Web application and allows a user to visualize WSN measurements in the Web browser. Since the WSN Web integration relies on a non-transparent gateway/server, we also show how to provide transparent cross-protocol resource access by means of an HTTP-CoAP proxy. The paper describes the major building blocks, functionalities and the implementation approach.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114195318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As soon as authorities become aware of a crisis, they should organise a response just before the dissemination of warning messages to citizens in the crisis zone. Thus, it is important to prevent the leak of information before the communication to citizens. This paper explores the use of threshold cryptography for sharing valuable information (or secrets) in PSNs. There has been intensive research in this area, but most work uses simulation as the only evaluation method; however, it is not clear whether the performance gains seen with simulation will translate into benefits on real networks. To explore this issue, we have implemented ATP, a transport protocol designed specifically for wireless ad hoc networks. We choose ATP because it uses a radically different design from TCP and because reported results claim significant improvement over TCP. We show how ATP must be modified in order to be implemented in existing open-source wireless drivers, and perform a comprehensive performance evaluation on a mesh testbed under different operating conditions. Our results show that the performance of ATP is highly sensitive to protocol parameters, especially the epoch timeout value. To improve its performance we design an adaptive version that utilizes a selfadjustable feedback mechanism instead of a fixed parameter. We illustrate its advantages by using a measurement study to compare it with the original ATP and to a standard TCP Tahoe implementation.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122566396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous DTN research mainly focuses on routing and information propagation. However, with large number of wireless devices' participation, how to maintain efficient and dynamic topology of the DTN becomes crucial. In this paper, we study the topology control problem in a predictable DTN where the time-evolving network topology is known a priori or can be predicted. We first model such time-evolving network as a directed space-time graph which includes both spacial and temporal information. The aim of topology control is to build a sparse structure from the original space-time graph such that (1) the network is still connected over time and supports DTN routing between any two nodes; (2) the total cost of the structure is minimized. We prove that this problem is NP-hard, and then propose two greedy-based methods which can significant reduce the total cost of topology while maintain the connectivity over time. Finally, we illustrate how the proposed methods can work for undirected DTNs. Simulations have been conducted on both random DTN networks and real-world DTN tracing data. Results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed topology control methods.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124048194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing PPA protocols employ the per-tag authentication, in which the reader has to sequentially authenticate the tags within the detecting region. Such a processing pattern becomes a bottleneck in current RFID enabled systems, especially for batch-type processing applications. In this paper, we propose an efficient authentication protocol, which leverages the collaboration among multiple tags for accelerating the authentication speed. We also find that the collision, usually considered as a negative factor, is a helpful media to enable collaborative authentication among tags. Our protocol, termed as Multiple-tags privacy-preserving Authentication Protocol (MAP), authenticates a batch of tags concurrently with strong privacy protection and high efficiency guarantee. The analytical and simulation results show that the efficiency of MAP is better than O(logN) and asymptotically approaches O(1).","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116681746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We introduce to jointly optimize trajectory planning for the mobile sink and workload balancing for the network. By doing so, the mobile sink is able to efficiently collect network-wide data within a given delay bound and the network can eliminate the energy bottleneck to dramatically prolong its lifetime. Such a joint optimization problem is shown to be NP-hard and we propose an approximation algorithm, named RPS-LB, to approach the optimal solution. In RPS-LB, according to observed properties of the median reference structure in the network, a series of Rendezvous Points (RPs) are selected to construct the trajectory for the mobile sink and the derived approximation ratio of RPSLB guarantees that the formed trajectory is comparable with the optimal solution. The workload allocated to each RP is proven to be balanced mathematically. We then relax the assumption that mobile sink knows the location of each sensor node and present a localized, fully distributed version, RPS-LB-D, which largely improves the system applicability in practice. We verify the effectiveness of our proposals via extensive experiments.","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117189978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, we propose a novel Multi-tier communication Security model for Emergency and rescue operations (MuSE) that addresses an acceptable trade-off between performance and security of information exchange in those environments. Based on in-depth user requirements analysis, MuSE deals with the communication system upon three tiers: federation, incident network and mobile client. At the federation tier, MuSE specifies an efficient Role- and Certificate-based Single Sign On solution (RC-SSO) for interorganization communication. In contrast to its counterparts such as SAML, RC-SSO does not depend on an identity provider and reduces the SSO steps to a minimum. At the incident network tier, MuSE prescribes a Position Aware Secure and Efficient Route discovery protocol (PASER). It aims to secure the network based on lightweight cryptography. PASER deals with the network in a hierarchical way and supports nodes positions' exchange, providing both satisfying level of security as well as an advanced network management. At the mobile client tier, MuSE restricts the network access to the rescue fighters' clients based on the lightweight standard EAP-PSK and a novel TETRA-based Dynamic key Distribution method (TEDDi).","PeriodicalId":253543,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Eighth International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Sensor Systems","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127342002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
