In the present new production method on the route of bulk mechanical alloying, the elemental constituent granules or agglomerates with any selected composition can be used for direct solid-state synthesis into single or dual phase thermoelectric materials. The Bi-Te-Sb system is adopted as the target thermoelectric material to investigate the effect of fine-grained structure on the figure of merit. In addition, temperature and pressure conditions in hot pressing are widely varied to describe the effect of process parameters on the thermoelectric properties. We have prepared artificially ordered Bi/Sb alloys with different (Bi/Sb) periods from 7.7 /spl Aring/ to 55 /spl Aring/ by MBE. Atomic-scale ordering effects on the structural and transport properties have been studied. The formation of an ordered alloy was confirmed by the presence of XRD superlattice satellites. Using electrical resistivity, thermopower, and magneto-transport measurements, we have observed a semimetal-semiconductor transition in an ordered BiSb superlattice. The intentional ordering of the layered Bi-Sb structure has produced a new phase and the measured differences in the electronic spectrum relative to the random alloy are a consequence of its atomic structure.","PeriodicalId":253439,"journal":{"name":"Eighteenth International Conference on Thermoelectrics. It is a sodium concentration cell which uses a /spl beta/\"-alumina solid electrolyte (BASE) tube as a separator between a high pressure region containing liquid sodium at 900-1300 K and a low pressure region containing a condenser at 400-700 K. As a power system, AMTEC is expected to deliver /spl sim/20 W/kg with a 15-20% thermal to electric conversion efficiency. AMTEC has been baselined as the power conversion system for the Ice and Fire missions in NASA's X2000 Program and is being developed as part of the NASA/DoE Advanced Radioisotope Power Systems Program. The measurement of cross-plane mobilities in thermoelectric superlattice structures cannot be performed by conventional techniques such as the van der Pauw method. Therefore, alternative techniques must be used to obtain this important parameter. Magnetoresistance is the increase in material resistivity due to a lengthened path for charge carriers in a perpendicular magnetic field. The magnetoresistance is related to the magnetic field strength as (/spl mu/B)/sup 2/ in the standard configuration, but the field dependence is also influenced by device geometry. This work focuses on measuring superlattice samples of composition Bi/sub 2/Te/sub 3//Sb/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ that are removed from their growth substrate and mounted on metal-coated substrates. This resulting mesa structure has a 100 /spl mu/m-square contact metallization. Technical issues related to the sample preparation for the measurement are discussed. The magnetoresistance effect is expected to be small due to the anticipated low mobilities in Bi/sub 2/Te/sub 3/-based materials. Magnetoresistance studies with such superlattice thermoelements were attempted using a dc magnetic field, but the sensitivity was insufficient. An ac magnetoresistance with lock-in detection can yield improved sensitivity.","PeriodicalId":253439,"journal":{"name":"Eighteenth International Conference on Thermoelectrics. However, no single thermoelectric material is suitable for use over a very wide range of temperatures (/spl sim/300-1000 K). It is therefore necessary to use different materials in each temperature range where they possess optimum performance. This can be achieved in two ways: (1) multistage thermoelectric generators where each stage operates over a fixed temperature difference and is electrically insulated but thermally in contact with the other stages; and (2) segmented generators where the p- and n-legs are formed of different segments joined in series. The concept of integrating new thermoelectric materials into a segmented thermoelectric unicouple has been introduced in earlier publications. This new unicouple is expected to operate over a 300-973 K temperature difference and will use novel segmented legs based on a combination of state-of-the-art thermoelectric materials and novel p-type Zn/sub 4/Sb/sub 3/, p-type CeFeSb/sub 12/-based alloys and n-type CoSb/sub 3/-based alloys. A conversion efficiency of about 15% is predicted for this new unicouple. We present the latest experimental results from the fabrication of this unicouple, including bonding studies between the different segments of the p-legs, n-legs, and p-leg to n-leg interconnect. Thermal and electrical tests of the unicouple are in progress and are briefly described.","PeriodicalId":253439,"journal":{"name":"Eighteenth International Conference on Thermoelectrics. Assuming short ranged interatomic forces we thereby evaluate the force constant matrix between La and Fe and between La and Sb. The strongest interactions are central bond stretching and that force constant is positive for the La-Sb interaction and negative for the La-Fe interaction. The potential seen by a La atom in the fixed environment of Sb and Fe atoms is found to be quite harmonic for energies even corresponding to T somewhat greater than room temperature, and the quartic term is positive and hence constraining. By incorporating the LDA information into a lattice dynamical model for CoSb/sub 3/ the two peak structure discovered in an analysis of inelastic neutron scattering data is explained. The specific heat is also calculated and found to disagree with previous experimental results, but those results have recently been superseded by other experimental results that agree with our calculations.","PeriodicalId":253439,"journal":{"name":"Eighteenth International Conference on Thermoelectrics.
