Various fractions were further analyzed using this conventional method for phytochemical composition and concentration dependent antioxidant activity. Due to the presence of phenolic compounds in the formulation, extracts were analyzed for total phenolic content, flavonoid content, and in- vitro antioxidant activity. Antioxidant capacity was determined using total reducing potential, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2-azinobis-ethyl-benzothiozoline-sulphonic acid diammonium salt (ABTS) and nitric oxide inhibition assays.\u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000Primitive phytochemical screening revealed the presence of steroids, saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids and tannins which were confirmed using thin-layer chromatography. The antioxidant activity of Abana tablet extracts decreased in the order ethyl acetate > ethanolic > chloroform > petroleum ether comparable to that of ascorbic acid and butylated hydroxytoluene.\u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000The current investigation suggests that the ethanolic extract and fractions of Abana polyherbal formulations exhibit significant antioxidant activity. Our results strongly imply that polyherbal compounds are a potential source of antioxidants capable of scavenging free radicals. The strong positive connection between antiradical scavenging activity and overall polyphenolic concentration in polyherbal drugs demonstrates that polyphenols are significant components capable of scavenging free radicals. The genus Lycium comprises 87 recognized species and is distributed in arid and semi-arid regions in temperate to subtropical zones around the world. China is currently the greatest supplier of goji berry, or wolfberry, products in the world and commercial amounts of wolfberry are grown in this country. Goji berry is densely cultivated around the southwestern part of China. Recently, goji berry became a popular fruit in Turkey due to containing health beneficial compounds, especially phenolic compounds (phenolic acids and flavonoids), carotenoids, tocopherol, and ascorbic acid and having antioxidant properties. Lycium fruits were used as remedies since ancient times in Asian countries, especially in China, for their emmenagogue, diuretic, antipyretic, tonic, aphrodisiac, hypnotic, and hepatoprotective effects. After the discovery of the medicinal and aromatic characteristics of goji berry products, interest in goji berry has increased around the world. Goji berry is regarded as a superfood because of its nutrient profile. Especially in recent years, the goji berry has been cultivated and used widely as a medical aromatic plant in many European countries, following its use in Southeast Asian countries. Over centuries, the main route for probiotics transfer into humans and animals is through fermented dairy products. However, currently, the selection of new probiotic strains and the development of new administration carriers due to consumer preference and conditions are on the rise, especially with the emergence of vegetarians. However, a number of uncertainties concerning the type of probiotic strain and the carrier exist. Therefore, this review seeks to elaborate on some plant-based probiotic carriers and discuss their shortfalls as well as report on some recent methods being used to protect probiotics in foods to serve as a basis for researchers and probiotic producing industries to correctly select the best strains for a particular carrier and modify existing plant-based probiotic carriers to promote survivability of probiotics to meet the high demands for plant-based probiotic products especially by vegetarians. This review reported that, transferring health benefits and maintaining bacterial cell viability for longer storage have been a major shortfall in the plant- based probiotic products industry due to challenges such as easy loss of cell viability and sensory attributes as a results of fermentation activities by probiotic bacteria. Hence in reducing these problems the review suggested that the adoption of techniques such as selection of resistant probiotic bacteria, prebiotics, encapsulation, and use of appropriate packaging and storage conditions would improve probiotic bacteria cell viability and maintain the sensory attributes in plant-based probiotic products to increase consumer acceptance.\u0000","PeriodicalId":251049,"journal":{"name":"Current Functional Foods","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115210183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Flaxseed is a crop of blue flowers that produce small, flat seeds of golden yellow to reddish-brown color. It is a native of the Mediterranean and West Asia. Due to its health benefits associated with the high content of linolenic acid (ALA), flaxseed has played a major role in diet and research. The ALA is an essential omega-3-fatty acid, and also due to its presence a major lignan, i.e. secoisolaricyrcinol diglucoside (SDG). There is also a wide range of uses of flaxseed oil in skin health, anticoagulants, anticancer, ulcer treatment, muscle growth, and weight loss. The nutritional composition of flaxseed is about 30% carbohydrate, 18% protein, and 39% fat. Flaxseed contains most carbohydrates in the form of fiber and contains more than 45% omega-3 fatty acids. It also contains dietary fibers, proteins and polyunsaturated fatty acids. All the ingredients possess different health benefits. Although plant resources are the key ingredient in drug discovery, the popularity of flaxseed always fascinate scientists, the number of articles giving information about the chemical components of flaxseed and its potential clinical use is very little. Actinidia deliciosa, also known as “Kiwi fruit”, is a dioecious plant that is native to China and distributed widely across the Asian continent. Commercial planting of kiwifruit was started in the early 20th century when it reached New Zealand from China. In recent times, Kiwi fruit has gained a major demand due to its high content of vitamin C. Kiwi fruit also contains dietary fiber, iron, carotenoids and is a rich source of antioxidants. These may aid in lowering blood pressure, improve wound healing, blood glucose control and improve bowel health. Vitamin C, choline, lutein, and zeaxanthin are antioxidants that assist in the removal of free radicals from the body and may prevent the body from various diseases and inflammations. Herein, we state the health benefits found in diverse compounds from Actinidia deliciosa, highlighting the source, morphology, chemical constituent, cultivation, production, traditional uses, nutritional value, health benefits, toxicity studies, clinical trials, and pharmacological activities while highlighting side effects associated with kiwifruit. This review provides a bird’s eye insight mainly on the morphological, phytochemical, and pharmacological activity, which could be beneficial in making use of technological and scientific advances.
