A drastic decline in land snail populations has been revealed in the oligotrophic areas of acidified regions of Europe. Since snail shells are an important calcium source for forest passerines, this decline causes severe reductions in forest passerine reproductive rates. In Estonia, about 40% of all woodlands consist of pine forests on poor, naturally acidic soils. It has been shown that birds breeding in such forests suffer calcium deficiency. A research project was carried out to estimate the current situation in Estonian forest land snail populations. This was the first large-scale quantitative investigation of forest snail fauna in the eastern Baltic area. Data about the abundance and species richness of snails are presented by geologically different regions and forest types of Estonia. The effect of industrial forest liming, occurring near some big oil-shale and cement works, was studied. Our data confirm that the number of snails in a substantial portion of Estonian forests is very low, and therefore birds breeding there may be vulnerable to possible increases in acidification. However, atmospheric pollution with calcareous materials in some ecologically problematic industrial regions seems to compensate for calcium deficiency for snail populations.","PeriodicalId":250336,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. Peipsi, one of the largest lakes of Europe, started already one and a half centuries ago, complex studies were initiated in the 1930s. The paper gives a brief survey of research into the hydrochemistry, macrophytes, bacterio-, phyto- and zooplankton, zoobenthos, fishes, and fisheries management of the lake. Special attention is paid to the main findings. Intensive anthropogenic eutrophication of L. Peipsi started in the 1970s. The nutrient content reached its maximum in the 1980s and decreased thereafter. An expansion of reeds, increase in the similarity between different lake parts, and decline of rare macrophyte species have occurred. Regarding phytoplankton, L. Pihkva has become strongly eutrophic, whereas L. Peipsi s.s. has eutrophied to a smaller extent, its northern part has maintained a mesotrophic appearance. In 1965- 99, the number but not the biomass of zooplankton increased. The number of small-sized zoo- plankters (especially rotifers) increased. No essential changes in the composition and distribution of macrozoobenthos in connection with eutrophication of the lake were observed. Dreissena polymorpha, introduced accidentally in the lake in the 1930s, has become the most significant animal population in L. Peipsi. Considering annual fish catches L. Peipsi surpasses all large lakes in North Europe. The main commercial fishes are smelt, perch, pikeperch, roach, bream, pike, and until the 1990s also vendace. At present it is changing into a smelt-bream-pikeperch lake.","PeriodicalId":250336,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. Biology. Analysis of electrophoretic data indicated a significant amount of variability in the studied populations of D. glomerata and P. maritima as judged by the number of isoenzyme phenotypes and isoforms detected. Phenotypic affinity between D. glomerata and P. maritima was evaluated by calculating four coefficients of similarity/distance: SI, DCD, Ih, and DE. Phenetic analysis demonstrated that D. glomerata and P. maritima are more distantly positioned in comparison to other closely related grass species that share common genomes. Systematic position and affinity between Dactylis and Puccinellia within Poaceae are briefly discussed.","PeriodicalId":250336,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences.
