A phytobenthos monitoring programme has been carried out in Estonian coastal waters since 1995. Monitoring activities include six sea areas representing different sets of environmental conditions and anthropogenic impact. Methods used in the programme are based on internationally accepted techniques developed for the HELCOM COMBINE programme. During the observation period, the most important events described were the decline of the Fucus vesiculosus population in the northern Gulf of Riga and the Vainameri ar ea, which has triggered several changes in phyto-benthic communities. A new invertebrate species for Estonian coastal waters, Orchestia cavimana, was described in Kudema Bay in 1999. Its population has remained stable since then. In the nearest future the phytobenthos monitoring programme will be reorganized in connection with the implementation of EU WFD in Estonia and the need to include new sea areas in the monitoring activities. The plants studied can be divided into three groups according to their sensitivity to cytokinins benzyladenine (BA) and kinetin (K). (1) Plants (gerbera cultivars) whose multiplication on BA media is not recommended. Permanent high K level must also be avoided. It must be decreased gradually during a long-term culture. After the 8th or 9th subculture the shoots are to be transferred to the resting medium with 0.1 mg/L K and 1.0 mg/L indoleacetic acid. (2) Plants ( Cordyline, Dracaena, Dieffenbachia) that may be multiplied on media containing either BA or K, the latter being preferable as its concentration may be varied within a larger range (0.5-4 mg/L) without negative side effects. (3) Plants ( Philodendron, Spathiphyllum, Musa) that may be multiplied on BA media without even relatively high BA concentrations (5 mg/L) leading to vitrification. However, in order to obtain the best shoots for rooting, the BA content of the multiplication media has to be reduced to 1/2-1/3 of its original value after the 5th or 6th subculture.","PeriodicalId":250336,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. Lankov","doi":"10.3176/biol.ecol.2006.1.04","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3176/biol.ecol.2006.1.04","url":null,"abstract":"The concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/PCDF) were studied in two fish species, Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras L.) and sprat (Sprattus sprattus balticus Schn.), in Estonian coastal waters and the open Baltic Sea in spring and autumn 2002. For analyses, 493 individual herring were combined to 20 pools and 246 individual sprat were combined to 8 pools. A positive correlation between the PCDD/PCDF concentration and age of herring (length, weight) both in spring and autumn was found to be statistically reliable. Bioaccumulation of PCDD/PCDF into the organism of fish from the studied waters depends on the age, length, and sex of the fish, and the fishing ground.","PeriodicalId":250336,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. Its distribution, abundance, ecology, and growth rate were studied in this area using SCUBA diving. The growth rate of juveniles and adults was studied by direct observations in the nature on artificial substrates and by reconstructing the linear growth from annual rings. Growth rate analysis was performed for five local populations dispersed widely in both the Finnish and Russian parts of the Gulf of Finland. It was found that the dispersal of zebra mussels to the west of the gulf is limited by the average salinity level of 5 PSU. During the last decade, the abundance of the mussels increased from one to two orders of magnitude. The growth rate of the zebra mussels in the Gulf of Finland is probably the lowest worldwide.","PeriodicalId":250336,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. Biology.
