Unsupervised and supervised classification and the maximum likelihood algorithm were used for the classification of satellite image pixels. Training polygons for justification of the classification were established after the repetitive checking of all classification units during the classification procedure. On that basis the mapping ofdifferent habitats, specific for the temperate zone and especially for Estonian nature, using a classification scheme with an emphasis on spectral separation of wetland and related forest types on satellite images was developed. The resultant map (1:50 000, Transverse Mercator Projection) includes 26 mapping units and fits rather well the Estonian habitat classification scheme. The map can be employed for land use conflict resolution, for monitoring at landscape and habitat level, as well as in biodiversity studies.","PeriodicalId":250336,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. Specific absorption and backscattering coefficients of these cyanobacteria were used in an optical model to simulate water reflectance in the case of different concentrations of cyanobacteria. MODIS band 1 (620-670 nm) response to changes in the concentration of cyanobacteria was simulated from the spectral reflectance data. The results show that MODIS band 1 response to changes in the concentration of cyanobacteria is nonlinear. Band 1 response is strongest in the case of Nodularia spumigena, indicating that quantitative mapping of this species in bloom conditions is easier than in the case of the other two species of cyanobacteria investigated.","PeriodicalId":250336,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. Remote sensing measurements with an airborne imaging spectrometer (AISA) were carried out on Finnish lakes and the Archipelago Sea to test the suitability of passive optical remote sensing methods for quantitative monitoring of different water properties. Eight water characteristics were under investigation: concentrations of chlorophyll a, pheophytin, suspended matter (Nuclepore and Whatman GFC filters), total phosphorus, total and dissolved organic carbon; water turbidity; and the Secchi disk depth. Over 70 retrieval variables from simple spectral ratios and their combinations to more sophisticated functions were tested. The suitability of two different spatial resolutions (20 x 20 and 100 x 100 m) was tested. Tallinn Bay is a semi-enclosed basin in the Gulf of Finland with a mild wave regime and an exceptionally heavy density of high speed ship traffic. Several implications resulting from the difference between the periods of wind waves (typically 3–4 s, maximum 7–8 s in extreme storms) and waves excited by fast ferries (10–15 s) are described. It is shown that ship-generated waves may play a decisive role in certain coastal processes. They cause unusually high near-bottom velocities at depths of 5–25 m. The influence of ship waves may trigger an additional sediment transport mechanism and cause considerable changes in the existing balance of sediment transport processes.","PeriodicalId":250336,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences.
