{"title":"Implementing Digital-Mediated Extensive Reading for Agriculture Students in Post-Pandemic: Inspiration from The Online Teaching","authors":"Mushoffan Prasetianto, Hafida Ruminar","doi":"10.4108/eai.14-8-2021.2317632","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4108/eai.14-8-2021.2317632","url":null,"abstract":". Extensive reading is believed to be beneficial to help students acquire a language. Nevertheless, it is not easy to implement extensive reading, especially in the non-English department. The first constraint is cost because most of the extensive reading strategy uses a grader reader, which is expensive to buy. The second constraint is students’ interest to read printed materials. The third constraint is reading log management. During the pandemic, we are inspired by how to implement extensive reading because we applied online learning. This new experience with online learning expands our insights. This paper aimed to elucidate how to implement extensive reading in the post-pandemic, which is not costly, and inform the strengths and weaknesses of implementing it. The research method used was a narrative inquiry. The authors highlighted prominent aspects during the implementation of extensive reading as the data of the study. The data was analyzed qualitatively. Some recommendations are discussed in conclusion.","PeriodicalId":249595,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th UNNES Virtual International Conference on English Language Teaching, Literature, and Translation, ELTLT 2021, 14-15 August 2021, Semarang, Indonesia","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116636412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper discusses the forms of local words in Baturraden folklore text and investigates the techniques applied by the students in translating the folklore. The participants are the students of Indonesian-English Translation Course at English Education Department, Jenderal Soedirman University who are a half from outside Banyumas and the rest are Banyumas residents. The research applies content text analysis and interview and the data is served in descriptive qualitative study. The local words found in Baturraden text are in the form of honorific titles, peerage, social status, names of places, plants and fruits, animals, costumes, weapon, body parts, musical instruments and onomatopoeia. Less than a fifth of the local words have equivalent lexis in the TL while the rest includes as Culture-Bound-Terms (CBTs). Result shows that the dominant techniques used by the students are formal/literal, cultural-equivalent, hypernym formal technique, couplets; the combination between formal-descriptive equivalent technique, cultural-functional equivalent technique, cultural-descriptive equivalent technique and the technique of local attribution-cultural equivalent technique. Both students have similarity in categorizing familiar and unfamiliar words. It indicates that both participants from different area of origin have the same level of difficulty in translating local words. The factor affecting the translation lies more on the attitude in translating the folklore. Major number of students who concern the most to provide culturally acceptable translation for TL readers tend to replace the CBTs while the rest of the students tend to keep the origin of the CBTs as cultural affirmation.","PeriodicalId":249595,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th UNNES Virtual International Conference on English Language Teaching, Literature, and Translation, ELTLT 2021, 14-15 August 2021, Semarang, Indonesia","volume":"199 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127312981","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nurjanah","doi":"10.4108/eai.14-8-2021.2317621","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4108/eai.14-8-2021.2317621","url":null,"abstract":". The existence of urban legend is believed by many people to this day. Each region certainly has a similarity or difference in concept and purpose from urban legends; this is because urban legends are the reflection of the existing socio-cultural existence in a society. This research is in a form of literature study that focuses on American and Indonesian urban legend horror figures in the movies. The purpose of this research is to make comparisons of urban legend horror figures in America and Indonesia, moreover, to ascertain the purpose of their existence in the movies. Descriptive qualitative method is used in this research by comparing the existence of urban legend figures from two different cultures, and also finding the main purpose behind the creation process of these figures. The result obtained from the basic idea of urban legend horror storytelling in Indonesia and America, is based on the motive of revenge. Some characteristics that are different are that the urban legend horror figures in Indonesian movies emphasize the character of ghosts based on the experiences and beliefs from the Indonesian people which is dominant with Indonesian culture, while the characters of ghost figures in America are the pure result of a fictional character creation process and have a very strong peculiarity of American culture. The urban legend horror figures in Indonesia aim to provide moral and ethical learning to the public to respect and obey local culture and customs. Otherwise, the existence of urban legend horror figures in America is purely entertainment.","PeriodicalId":249595,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th UNNES Virtual International Conference on English Language Teaching, Literature, and Translation, ELTLT 2021, 14-15 August 2021, Semarang, Indonesia","volume":"792 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116133331","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"SFL: Fundamentals and Its Applications in EFL Classrooms","authors":"Napak-on Sritrakarn","doi":"10.4108/eai.14-8-2021.2317606","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4108/eai.14-8-2021.2317606","url":null,"abstract":". Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is a theory which describes language in its social context. Based on this concept, SFL provides teachers with a grammar that focuses on meaning rather than form and concentrates on whole texts and their organizations as well as on sentences. For learners, SFL suggests that language should be learnt “trinocularly”, not only ‘from below’- as with traditional grammar- and ‘from above’- as with much communicative language teaching- but also ‘from within’ or ‘from round about’ (McCabe, Gledhill & Liu, 2011: 37). The SFL model therefore has been widely applied in educational settings around the world, both from research and pedagogical perspectives. In an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning context, a number of studies have employed different approaches of the SFL theory and reported the findings from different classrooms. By focusing on the context of Asian countries, the present paper discusses the fundamentals of the theory, summarizes the findings from the collected publications, illustrates the potential challenges from the applications in EFL classrooms, and discusses directions for future research.","PeriodicalId":249595,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th UNNES Virtual International Conference on English Language Teaching, Literature, and Translation, ELTLT 2021, 14-15 August 2021, Semarang, Indonesia","volume":"69 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131990225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study investigated how linguistic complexity and fluency of ten L2 learners' oral performance correlate with their writing ability. After creating a written speech, the students' are administered to present the speech via zoom meeting. The recorded speech is transcribed and analyzed along with the written speech. The fluency is investigated using Kormos's (2006) measurements for oral performance and Abdel Latif (2013) for the written text. The finding of this study is reveal that only one of lexical complexity measurement has the sig. (2-tailed) value is not higher than 0.05 (LD=0.034, LS=0.941, and LV=0.674), which means there is a significant difference in lexical density while other measurements are not significantly different between their writing and speaking performance. Regarding the comparison of syntactic complexity, two of five indices of comparing the syntactic complexity of two-language production showed value <0.05 which means these two indices are significantly differ the writing production from the speaking performance. The sig. (2-tailed) value of comparing five indices of syntactic complexity such as MLS, MLT, C/S, VP/T, and CP/ is 0.0023, 0.064, 0.954,0.042 and 0.760, respectively. Concerning the fluency, it is found that the association of speaking fluency and writing fluency is not always in line.","PeriodicalId":249595,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th UNNES Virtual International Conference on English Language Teaching, Literature, and Translation, ELTLT 2021, 14-15 August 2021, Semarang, Indonesia","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130683798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
