This article considers the intersections of\u0000 prayer and language practice, and I make central two arguments. The first is\u0000 that educational prayer—a particular type of teacher-led extemporaneous\u0000 prayer in Catholic schools—is a linguistic phenomenon, a highly-flexible set\u0000 of linguistic resources, captured within a special interactional frame\u0000 marked by ambiguous boundaries which contains both prescribed formulaic\u0000 linguistic properties and those which allow the performer to attend to real\u0000 time classroom contingencies. Drawing on interactional data from a Catholic\u0000 school classroom, this article delimits the contextualization of linguistic\u0000 signs during prayer: how teachers indicate the connection between their\u0000 words and the sociocultural frameworks which are relevant for that action.\u0000 The second is that both interactional sociolinguists and Catholic school\u0000 researchers would greatly benefit from attending to these linguistic\u0000 features, from seeing prayer unfold in real-time.

The\u0000 results suggest that while diocesan seminarians are generally supportive of\u0000 Catholic schools, they are more positive about the value of Catholic schools\u0000 and the importance of providing financial support than they are about the\u0000 effectiveness of Catholic schools, especially their religious effectiveness.\u0000 The seminarians’ sentiments toward value and financial support are\u0000 comparable to those of previous studies of priests. The seminarians’ own\u0000 backgrounds in Catholic schools, selection of the most important purpose of\u0000 Catholic schools, age, Hispanic ethnicity, and whether the seminary provided\u0000 academic instruction about Catholic schools are factors that influenced\u0000 their sentiments, particularly of effectiveness. S. that\u0000 have left far too many Black and Hispanic male students behind with respect\u0000 to academic skill development, high school graduation, and college success\u0000 have led Catholic groups to provide alternative secondary school models to\u0000 advance the academic and career success of urban students. One of these\u0000 initiatives is the NativityMiguel model school, the first of which opened in\u0000 New York City in 1971. The present study examines the lived experience, with\u0000 respect to benefits of this education on the subsequent academic and career\u0000 successes, of male graduates of two of these schools, one for African\u0000 American, or Black, students and one for Mexican American students in\u0000 different parts of the country. Analyses of interviews with 37 graduates\u0000 showed that they benefitted from the schools’ approach to academic skill\u0000 development and the building of resilience, leadership, and a commitment to\u0000 service in the context of a community that continued to support the\u0000 development of resilience after middle school graduation. Differences in\u0000 aspects of the two programs are examined along with the implications for\u0000 making use of the schools’ initiatives on a larger scale.
