We first introduce the novel analog canceller design which utilizes optical components to construct sufficient effective taps to enable wideband active analog cancellation. A novel tuning algorithm is then proposed to reduce the usage of optical carriers to save the space and energy of such design. We also explored the minimum efficient number of taps under various hardware conditions to avoid spare taps created. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time such an analytical approach is proposed for an efficient canceller design. Simulations results demonstrate that the 5G In-Band Full-Duplex (IBFD) system can be implemented with the help of the novel optical domain based design. With a 12 bits analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and 20 effective taps, it is experimentally proved that the SI is efficiently suppressed in a 3GPP LTE specifications compatible system within 1GHz of operational bandwidth.","PeriodicalId":248190,"journal":{"name":"2020 54th Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and Computers","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130502249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We aim to design efficient distributed beam scheduling algorithms such that the network utility which is a function of the average throughput can be maximized subject to the (average and instantaneous) power consumption constraints of the base stations. We propose a Medium Access Control (MAC) and a power allocation/adaptation mechanism utilizing the Lyapunov stochastic optimization framework which can be cast into two stochastic/deterministic optimization problems, where the first one can be solved via convex optimizations and the second one can be solved by \"max-weight\" type algorithms or non-cooperative games. The main novelty of the proposed approach is to formulate an optimization framework that is applicable for different MAC schemes with optimizable parameters such that the optimal values of the network utility function under such different MAC schemes can be achieved for distributed beam scheduling. To illustrate the proposed approach, we consider two MAC schemes, namely, non-cooperative game and p-persistent medium access control. We conduct simulations to justify the effectiveness of the proposed optimization framework. Interestingly, the non-cooperative game based approach can converge faster but with a worse optimal value compared to that achieved by the p-persistent based scheme. Hence, in this particular case, we suggest to start with the non-cooperative game scheme and then adapt to the p-persistent based scheme.","PeriodicalId":248190,"journal":{"name":"2020 54th Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and Computers","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127855147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We also focus on millimeter-wave (mmW) systems, where the array gain is important in compensating for the large free space path loss and channels are likely to be relatively sparse. We discuss the importance of channel state information (CSI) at the UTs, and propose an approach using SVD-based precoding with zero-forcing to eliminate inter-user interference. Recent advances in class parallelism significantly reduce the communication overhead of model parallelism to a single floating-point number per machine per iteration. However, traditional fault-tolerance schemes, when applied to class parallelism, require storing the entire model on the hard disk. Thus, these schemes are not suitable for soft and frequent system noise such as stragglers (temporarily slow worker machines). In this paper, we propose an erasure-coding based redundant computing technique called robust class parallelism to improve the error resilience of model parallelism. We show that by introducing slight overhead in the computation at each machine, we can obtain robustness to soft system noise while maintaining the low communication overhead in class parallelism. More importantly, we show that on standard classification tasks, robust class parallelism maintains the state-of-the-art performance.","PeriodicalId":248190,"journal":{"name":"2020 54th Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and Computers","volume":"1994 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125549809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Human agents are assumed to make threshold based local binary decisions, where the thresholds are considered as random variables. The proposed hybrid system consists of multiple human sub-populations, with the thresholds of each sub-population characterized by non-identically distributed random variables, and a limited number of machines (physical sensors) whose exact values of thresholds are known. For such a hybrid system, we derive the asymptotic performance at the fusion center in terms of Chernoff information. When available, the effect of side information for human sensors is also studied in this paper. Moreover, a budget-constrained human worker selection optimization problem is formulated to determine the optimal number of workers selected from each sub-population according to different costs so that the best decision making performance could be achieved.","PeriodicalId":248190,"journal":{"name":"2020 54th Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and Computers","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126502015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address this challenge, we present in this paper a phase-coherent distributed MIMO architecture, based on off-the-shelf, low-cost components. In the proposed architecture, up- and down-conversion are carried out at the central unit (CU). The RRHs are connected to the CU by means of optical fibers carrying oversampled radio-frequency (RF) 1-bit signals. In the downlink, the 1-bit signal is generated via sigma-delta modulation. At the RRH, the RF signal is recovered from the 1-bit signal through a bandpass filter and a power amplifier, and then fed to an antenna. In the uplink, the 1-bit signal is generated by a comparator whose inputs are the low-noise-amplified received RF signal and a suitably designed dither signal. The performance of the proposed architecture is evaluated with satisfactory results both via simulation and measurements from a testbed.","PeriodicalId":248190,"journal":{"name":"2020 54th Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and Computers","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126491912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The APs are physically grouped into predetermined \"cell-centric clusters\", which are connected to different cooperative central processing units (CPUs). Given the cooperative nature of the considered communications network, we assume that each user is associated with a \"virtual cluster\", that, in general, involves some APs belonging to different cell-centric clusters. Assuming the maximum-ratio-combining at the APs, we propose a user-association procedure aimed at the maximization of the sum-rate of the users in the system. The proposed procedure is based on the Hungarian Algorithm and exploits only the knowledge of the position of the APs in the network. Numerical results reveal that the performance of the proposed approach is not always better than the alternatives but it offers a considerably lower backhaul load with a negligible performance loss compared to full-cell free approaches.","PeriodicalId":248190,"journal":{"name":"2020 54th Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and Computers","volume":"3 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126104508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we consider per-antenna power allocation with a given finite set of power levels towards maximizing the long-term energy efficiency of the multi-user systems, while satisfying the QoS (quality of service) constraints at the end users in terms of required SINRs (signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio), which depends on channel information.
