Results of the study have verified that the extent to which the expatriates adjust to overseas assignments is likely to depend on five major factors, i.e., national culture, individual attributes, work organization, community, and family members. The findings facilitate strategic plans to satisfy the expatriates' social service needs and to maximize their adaptability in the foreign workplace.","PeriodicalId":246202,"journal":{"name":"Employee Assistance Quarterly","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124118702","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It explores the dissonance that has occurred in the social work profession arising from the conflicting views of the socioeconomic status of clients that social workers are most obligated to serve. The effect of a major shift towards privatization of the Australian social service system and the ability of occupational social workers to more readily adapt to this shift based on their experience outside of the public sector is also examined. The specific activities and contributions occupational social workers have made to assist workers in restructuring and downsizing is highlighted. Limitations of schools of social work to train occupational social workers are also explored. The article concludes with a discussion of the challenges faced by Australian occupational social workers in the future.","PeriodicalId":246202,"journal":{"name":"Employee Assistance Quarterly","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115023837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cost effectiveness of employee assistance programming is measured by analyzing both obscure and explicit factors. This discussion explicates these factors, and explores how EAPs can minimize losses in the industrial setting. The impact of the consumer'S “grapevine” is also noted. The corollary between increased utilization and cost-effectiveness is studied in the review of EAP services at a nuclear power plant.","PeriodicalId":246202,"journal":{"name":"Employee Assistance Quarterly","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130113259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pre-and post-treatment measures were obtained on 11,756 employees who accessed treatment over a seven-year period. Sixty-six percent of these employees reported at least moderate symptoms of depression at the time of intake. After treatment, approximately half of the depressed subjects reported no such symptoms. Applying results from research conducted by Stewart, Ricci, Chee, Hahn, and Morganstein (2003) to the present study indicated substantial cost savings associated with the EAP treatment of depression. The purpose of the evaluation presented in this paper was to identify levels of satisfaction with the established EAP in a particular ambulance service, using a scientifically robust approach. Hence, a mixed method was adopted which incorporated the collection of quantitative and qualitative, objective and subjective data. Survey data (n = 667) supported high to very high levels of satisfaction with the individual services the organization provides, the EAP program in general, and a high level of usage of these services by ambulance personnel. Usage data demonstrated that more than half of the staff in the organization utilised support services at least once in a given year and qualitative data reiterated the relatively high levels of satisfaction as well as elucidated some issues that require further investigation. Results supported the structure and delivery of this service's staff support program and provide orientation for future research.","PeriodicalId":246202,"journal":{"name":"Employee Assistance Quarterly","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-07-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134229731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
