Martinez","doi":"10.1109/POWERENG.2009.4915259","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/POWERENG.2009.4915259","url":null,"abstract":"Traditionally, the design of the primary undergrounded circuits for electrical distribution has been based on technical exploitation criteria, as load capacity, reliability, service quality, losses, and economical concerns as installation cost, being so achieved a compromise which minimizes the investment cost on the basis of optimizing the cable section. This procedure maintains its validity from the technical point of view but, nowadays, a new environmental and economical concern should be taken in account in order to determinate the optimum section of an undergrounded cable. This new factor is just the emission of greenhouse effect gasses, as CO2, consequence of the primary source of energy used in the electrical energy production. The ecological impact of these emissions is being increasing its relevance as increases the social conscience on environmental concerns, in particular, since the signature of the Kyoto Agreement. In this work, we present a designing method which considers the part of generation of energy necessary to cover the losses in the undergrounded distribution lines, and includes the cost of the CO2 emissions in the computation of the optimum section of the cable. It is concluded that by increasing the section in such a way, a relevant amount of the Joule losses can be saved in comparison to that produced by the cross section obtained by a classical procedure. However, due to the complexity of the power systems networks, for an effective instruction of this topic it is required to use a computed simulation environment to provide a complement to analytical methods. Therefore, a methodology for the modeling of power systems on the transient analysis using a MATLAB/Simulink program is proposed. This methodology allows producing voltage and current transients that correspond to fault events, instabilities and the introduction of power electronics equipments in the power systems. Furthermore, this also allows students take advantage of the mathematical models they have derived to perform the desired simulation. Since state space models are used, this simulation tool is useful to study the transient phenomena and easier to compare with power systems laboratory results. So, students can understand how a simulation program have been developed, their capabilities and limitations. The plug-in vehicles will affect utility operations by adding additional electricity demand. There has generally been the expectation that the grid will not be greatly affected by the use of these vehicles, because the recharging would only occur during off-peak hours. Several scenarios of PHEVs' penetration are studied considering the grid-for-vehicle (G4V) energy transferring as a primary approach. Depending on the power level, timing, and duration of the PHEV connection to the grid, there could be a wide variety of impacts on grid constraints, capacity needs and emissions generated. In a strong penetration scenario, if many households charge their PHEVs over the same time period, especially if it is when the owners first return home and the domestic consumption is increased, then the peak may be higher than the utility expects. The design of the tracking system is approached as a mechatronic concept, integrating the control system in the mechanical model of the tracking mechanism. The paper proposes a design strategy based on two steps: designing the optimal tracking system that intends to minimize the actuating forces necessary to track the Sun path, and designing the optimal control law in order to minimize the energy consumption for orientation. The structural solution of the tracking system for study is developed using a method based on the multi-body systems (MBS) theory. Renewable energy is regarded as a solution to this problem, particularly considering its transformation in electricity but this does not include the impact of the transportation sector, which represents a significant component of the imported fuels consumption. The other main limitations associated to renewable electricity consists on the need to increase the storage capacity that might attenuate the effect of renewable energy sources intermittence and disparity between supply and demand. In both these main problems associated with renewable energy management, the Plug-in Electric Vehicles (EV) could be a part of the solution in that the use of the vehicle to grid (V2G) technology can provide storage of electric energy during low demand times and use it to match the demand in peak hours and/or to avoid fossil fuel consumption. However, could the large scale EV penetration lead to increasing the fraction of electricity from renewable? Is the usage of EV batteries like as a storage system truly the best solution? Is the EV a better solution for the vehicle's owner than the internal combustion vehicle from an economical point of view? Topic of power quality is also of crucial importance for the widespread application of renewables and deep penetration of energy sources of distributed power generation. Due to the insufficient ability of batteries to absorb power surges and spikes and to deliver high energy bursts, batteries based uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS) are simply purely suited for short-term bridging by power drop or spike compensation. To handle power surges and short-term power outages the energy market needs supercapacitors with their significant benefits in power- and peak-assist. Supercapacitors are reliable, maintenance-free, short-time power source with long lifespan and are suitable to avoid the effect of voltage twist and of electrical noise or to buffer short-term outages on the power grid. In particular, the Vector-Space Decomposition (VSD) method, which is widely used for n-phase machine analysis, requires different transformation matrices to be used depending on the displacement angle between successive phases, as discussed in a companion work. The proposed multi-index nonlinear coordinated controller can effectively coordinate the dynamic and steady-state performance of the controlled system. It can enhance the stability of the system, improve the dynamic characteristics of state variables, and can improve the control accuracy of output variables such as terminal voltage, active power output of the generator. Simulation results show that to control BESS and generator coordinately has the advantage of enhancing the stability of the system.
