This paper further investigates its narrowband interference suppression capability. Effects of different jamming parameters such as the number of jamming tones, jamming power, and data rate ratio of narrowband to UWB signals, are studied. Using varactors based on barium-strontium-titanate (BST) thick films, a figure of merit FoM = 29deg /dB has been measured at 2.8 GHz. The bandwidth of the realized circuit using 3 unit cells reached 10%. The agreement of the presented result from simulation and measurement is good, the differences can be explained by tolerances of the used components. Additionally the simulations of a 180deg phase shifter based on the same components for the unit cell is presented. To reduce the effect of misalignment in the multilayer coupler, we propose a novel multilayer coupler structure which is insensitive to misalignment. The package has ports on the ground plane for the SMT, and a cover on top of the circuit to protect the circuit. Every transmission line is simulated as an embedded micro-strip line to account for the cover effect. All the internal ports are connected to the output ports at ground plane through via transition. The total number of LTCC layers is 5 including the cover layer. It is shown by analytical derivations that the novel scheme has similar performance to that of the older scheme. The new scheme also has the advantage of lower implementation cost by removing the necessity of having a calibration transceiver. Impulse-based ultra wideband (I-UWB) is an attractive radio technology, and we have developed four medium access control (MAC) protocols to support I-UWB radios in such networks. The four MAC protocols are multichannel ALOHA (M-ALOHA), multichannel pulse sense multiple access (M-PSMA), PSMA with collision avoidance (PSMA/CA), and busy signal multiple access (BSMA). These MAC protocols permit random, distributed medium access with no central point of failure. This paper characterizes the energy efficiency, throughput, and delay of the four protocols. It exhibits less than 0.7/spl deg/ phase and 0.3 dB amplitude I/Q mismatches over a bandwidth of 220 MHz. The low spatial fading of UWB signals compared to NBI signals is exploited to provide \"interference diversity\". Whereas classical diversity techniques are designed to increase the desired received signal power, the aim of interference diversity is to minimize the effective NBI power. Selection diversity (SD), equal gain combining (EGC) and maximal ratio combining (MRC) methods are investigated. It is shown that SD and ECG result in a 3-dB performance improvement when the number of receive antennas is doubled. Also, MRC yields additional gains over SD and ECG. The modulator discretely changes the phase of a constant envelope carrier according to the input digital data bits. A test chip was fabricated in a 0.13/spl mu/m logic CMOS process. Experiment results show that the modulator consumes 2 mA, has an operating frequency range between 1.5 GHz and 3.3 GHz with EVMs below 4%, and can support a data rate up to 225 Mbps with EVMs lower than 5.5%.
