Undoubtedly higher levels of fuel economy, reduced emission of greenhouse gases and other pollutants, and a lesser dependence on petroleum are among major incentives for many industrial and developing countries. The ultimate success of this transformation, in large part, depends on development of low cost, compact, efficient, fault tolerant, and quiet adjustable speed motor drives. The present article provides a comparison among major adjustable speed drives which are currently considered for electric propulsion. In addition, Double Stator Switched Reluctance Machine (DSSRM) as an alternative candidate will be introduced.","PeriodicalId":243822,"journal":{"name":"2012 Electrical Systems for Aircraft, Railway and Ship Propulsion","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122388583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem is faced in this paper of studying the electromechanical transient resulting from a sudden line connection of a thruster motor in a shipboard integrated power system of a cruise liner. This case study has been selected because direct-on-line thruster motor start-up is one of the most perturbing scenario for the shipboard power system voltage and frequency stability. The transient is reproduced by means of a complete system modeling in the Matlab-Simulink environment and results are assessed by comparison with measurements taken on the ship. The good accordance between simulation and experimental results proves the effectiveness of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":243822,"journal":{"name":"2012 Electrical Systems for Aircraft, Railway and Ship Propulsion","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130066825","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

EV can become a viable alternative to the internal combustion engine only if they are able to meet certain reliability, safety, performance, and cost criteria. In addition, electrical vehicles have serious disadvantages because of the limitation on cruising range imposed by weight, capacity of the electric accumulators and long recharging time. Improvement of efficiency of motor traction drives is an important issue in pure electric vehicles to improve the running distance on one charge [1]. In this paper, the authors evaluate IPM motor by considering their influence on the performance of the vehicle. The evaluation is demonstrated experimentally.","PeriodicalId":243822,"journal":{"name":"2012 Electrical Systems for Aircraft, Railway and Ship Propulsion","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116024199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An appropriate approach with adapted modelling techniques are therefore required, to cover the design process with an accurate design evaluation while reducing long computing time. SysML and Modelica languages are positioned as important languages for complex system modelling. Surrogate modelling technique also comes up as a solution for decreasing time computing in multidisciplinary optimization. In this paper, an approach combining SysML, Modelica and surrogate modelling techniques is applied to electric vehicle modelling and optimization. Results show that the proposed approach allows designers to integrate easily accurate models in conceptual design level with a significant reduction in computing time.","PeriodicalId":243822,"journal":{"name":"2012 Electrical Systems for Aircraft, Railway and Ship Propulsion","volume":"202 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131578435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been shown that algorithms of synchronized PWM provide continuous phase voltage symmetry for any ratio (integral or fractional) of switching frequency to fundamental frequency of the inverters and also for any ratio between the two dc source voltage levels of these systems. Phase voltage spectra of open-end winding drives for both continuous and discontinuous schemes of synchronized PWM do not contain even harmonics and sub-harmonics during the whole control range, including the zone of over-modulation which is especially important for the medium and high-power traction systems.","PeriodicalId":243822,"journal":{"name":"2012 Electrical Systems for Aircraft, Railway and Ship Propulsion","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130832007","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Air-cooled in-wheel motors are preferred as they allow more passenger space and remove any plumbing requirements within the vehicle. This paper shows a preliminary analysis of the thermal limitations for axial flux internal rotor (AFIR) and axial flux internal stator (AFIS) machines. It is shown that AFIR type air-cooled machines favours low speed machines with traction power between 3.75kW-5kW and motor diameters between 13\" and 15\". This forces the traction power to be distributed on 3 or 4 wheels. Conversely the dependence of the cooling on the rotational speed in AFIS air-cooled machines favours high speed geared motors motor powers up to 7.5kW for a motor diameter of 15\". This enables the traction power to be distributed on 2 wheels or more.","PeriodicalId":243822,"journal":{"name":"2012 Electrical Systems for Aircraft, Railway and Ship Propulsion","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128134198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The electric network supplies the aircraft auxiliaries. It is powered by a turbo alternator and hybridized with other electric sources in order to fulfil the demand of the auxiliaries and to limit the consumption on the main source. In this paper, the studied hybrid system is composed of the main source (the turbine and the alternator), the secondary source (batteries and supercapacitors) and the load representing the auxiliaries. The model of this electric network is organized by using the Energetic Macroscopic Representation (EMR). A Maximal Control Structure (MCS) is determined by inversion rules of the EMR model. An energy management strategy is defined to share the power supplied by each of the electrical sources. This share depends on the dynamic of the load. Simulation results, using Matlab Simulink™ software, are presented.","PeriodicalId":243822,"journal":{"name":"2012 Electrical Systems for Aircraft, Railway and Ship Propulsion","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125287900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
