A wavelength selective switch is employed both as a wavelength router to feed multiple antenna elements, and as a tunable phase shifter to independently control the phase of each signal at any antenna element. In the experiment, two signals at 12.5GHz and 37.5GHz are simultaneously fed to the four output ports of the wavelength selective switch with independent and tunable phase shifts, emulating the independent steering of two signals in a four-element phased-array antenna. The results confirm the precision and flexibility of the proposed scheme.","PeriodicalId":241445,"journal":{"name":"2014 11th European Radar Conference","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127737132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently a multipurpose and multi-channel radar called GigaRad is operated in X band and allows an overall bandwidth of up to 6 GHz, resulting in a theoretical range resolution of up to 2.5 cm. Hence, primary obligation is a detailed analysis of various possible error sources, being of no or less relevance for low-resolution systems. A high degree of digital technology enables advanced signal processing and error correction to be applied. The paper outlines technical main features of the radar, the basic error correction strategy and illustrates some first imaging results.","PeriodicalId":241445,"journal":{"name":"2014 11th European Radar Conference","volume":"158 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116467723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such tiny radar systems open up a vast range of new applications from automotive radar, safety helmet radar, bicycle radar, health monitoring radar, robot guidance radar, micro-UAV surveillance radar, and a host of other applications. Co-operative networks of these tiny radars also constitute an exciting possibility. Considerable progress has been made in designing and building millimeter wave CMOS radar systems and addressing the technology limitations imposed by CMOS. However many challenges remain relating to interference mitigation when there exist large numbers of small radars operating in close spacial and frequency proximity to each other. Waveform diversity and cognitive radar techniques assist in addressing these challenges. This talk will discuss current work on CMOS radar hardware, signal processing, waveform scheduling and the idea of opportunistic radar. Further progress on approaches to determining fundamental performance limitations of tiny radar systems is currently underway.","PeriodicalId":241445,"journal":{"name":"2014 11th European Radar Conference","volume":"04 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129344940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, such models often prove inadequate in near-field imaging due to the complexity of the background and the acquisition setup. Here, we propose a calibration technique to efficiently acquire the necessary field information via measurements of a known calibration object containing a sufficiently small “point” scatterer. Only measurement data is needed to generate the images, i.e., the simulation or analytical incident-field model is replaced by a measurement-based model. The approach is validated through experiments with a planar raster scanning system. Two different tissue mimicking phantoms are imaged: i) dielectric cylinders embedded in a 5-cm thick layer of high-loss dielectric material and ii) tissue phantom containing porcine and bovine meat samples as well as grape inclusions.","PeriodicalId":241445,"journal":{"name":"2014 11th European Radar Conference","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114697174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Presently, there is insufficiency of published experimental FSR sea clutter data at near zero grazing angle over the sea. Such data is fundamental for the development of FSR systems for maritime applications. Therefore clutter experiments have been undertaken and data has been recorded at frequencies of 7.5 GHz and 24 GHz with static, medium gain antennas for low sea state 1-3 on the Douglas scale. Analysis of forward scatter propagation phenomena is presented, and spectral and statistical analysis of forward scatter clutter is performed.","PeriodicalId":241445,"journal":{"name":"2014 11th European Radar Conference","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130010051","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to keep power consumption of these ADCs acceptable, their resolution has to be kept as low as possible. We investigate which ADC resolution is required for a typical 79 GHz person detection scenario. The analysis is based on simulations performed with an end-to-end Matlab simulation chain, taking into account the waveform specifics, chip implementation, propagation effects, targets and environment. We conclude that in the considered scenario a 4 bit ADC is sufficient. This result shows that complete 79 GHz radar system-on-chip implementations in advanced CMOS nodes are feasible, enabling a wide array of novel applications in automotive, industrial and consumer products.","PeriodicalId":241445,"journal":{"name":"2014 11th European Radar Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131006433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
