The main purpose is to make lighting controls easily accessible which enables residents to make the best use of a lighting design. Selecting technologies and using them effectively is a true challenge. This project chooses lighting control, as light is the primary electrical appliance used in a house. One main switch panel has been developed where we can control all the lights in the house from different places. The developed switch panel gives convenience to users especially in time consuming. One could easily control and monitor the light in one place at one time, without going to every room to check. Panel switch is built with minimum buttons, which is user friendly, and it is easily accessed. The control system is equipped with infrared remote control that enables us easy access of the control lights, barely using any effort or energy, physically. The remote control system maximizes the usage of infrared. To on or off the light, one only needs to move his/her hand and points the available remote to the selected light. Any remote control can be used as the system works due to the steps specified. This system is convenient and helpful to unable person such as elderly or disabled.","PeriodicalId":239300,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Student Conference on Research and Development, 2003. However, it is still not an interactive method for teaching and learning the per-unit representation. Thus, it needs a new approach to make teaching and learning process more interactive and interesting for students. The graphical user interface (GUI) provides the user with interactive visual communication to analyze the power systems. This paper presents the GUI based per-unit representation of power systems with symmetrical components in the visual basic (VB) environment. The software allows the user to draw the single line diagram representing the power system with ratings of each component. This GUI based per-unit system is developed for the teaching and learning environment of the power system analysis. The user can make use of this interactive software to calculate the per-unit impedance with respect to the system common MVA base. The reactance diagram of the three sequence impedances, namely, the zero-, positive-, and negative- sequence impedances, can be drawn either manually or automatically. It is hoped that this GUI software will enhance the learning process and make it more interactive, interesting and user friendly.","PeriodicalId":239300,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The design procedure starts from the formulation for the width dimension of the microstrip antenna. Upon achieving the most appropriate antenna width, the design proceeds to determining the most appropriate antenna length. The designed antenna is then simulated using a full wave electromagnetic simulation software. Analysis of one port characteristics is carried out on the designed antennas. The performance focuses on the return loss, input impedance, voltage standing wave ratio, current distribution and charge distribution. The designed antenna is then simulated with perturbed structures introduced. It is found that the antenna is well matched at its corresponding frequency of operations.","PeriodicalId":239300,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Student Conference on Research and Development, 2003. Location management enables the network to track the locations of users and their terminals between call arrivals. The operation of informing the network about the current location of the mobile user is known as location update. A READY timer (RT) mechanism was proposed in 3GPP 23.060 to determine when MS ready to switch from cell tracking to RA tracking. The main idea of location updation is to reduce the unnecessary location update and paging cost. We propose a dynamic counter mechanism to reduce the location update and paging cost in this system. The updation takes place only when the mobile moves to the new routing area (RA). A simulator based on Matlab, which can study the location updation performance, and signalling activities was developed. Initial result shows that the average location updation could be reduced by using dynamic counter.","PeriodicalId":239300,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The system performance is evaluated over Nakagami fading channels in the presence of partial band interference with numerical method. This paper presents a method for developing various non-linear load models so as to analyze the current harmonic waveform characteristics of these loads. The electromagnetic transient simulation program (PSCAD/EMTDC) was used in modeling some of the non-linear loads such as personal computers, uninterruptible power supply and fluorescent lamp with electronic ballast. Simulation results provide the estimate of the harmonic currents in terms of the total harmonic distortion and the individual harmonic current components. The results obtained from simulations are then verified by the experimental results.","PeriodicalId":239300,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Student Conference on Research and Development, 2003. Process industries such as petrochemical, pharmaceutical and semiconductor industries have shown that by doing minor alterations in the design stage and the operation of the process industries, a big impact can be achieved in the bottom line of the company's performance. This paper attempts to consolidate die various energy saving techniques that can be used both in a) design of new process industries: layout of plant, load centers like the chillers, cooling towers and boilers, piping arrangements, motor sizing and the importance of the parallel operation of loads and variable speed drives. B) method of operation: selecting the optimum running combination of loads, determining the number of pumps required to meet a certain demand in the industry. Finally the paper spells out a procedure for \"daily tracking of the energy costs\" in industry by means of a simple Excel spread sheet that can be used by the managers to keep track of the utility costs thus effectively controlling the company's profitability.","PeriodicalId":239300,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
