A novel efficient method for coding quantized DCT coefficients is proposed. It is based on coefficient separation into bit planes, taking into account correlation between the values of neighbor coefficients in blocks, between the values of the corresponding coefficients of neighbor blocks as well as between the corresponding coefficients of different color layers. It is shown that the designed technique allows for images already compressed by JPEG to additionally increase compression ratio by 1.3...2.3 times without introducing additional losses.","PeriodicalId":238993,"journal":{"name":"ISPA 2005. These filters basically consist in a data transformation to the time-frequency domain, a data-adaptive weighting of the localized spectra, and a back transformation. We illustrate that the inverse S-transform of manipulated spectra not necessarily transforms the localized signals as expected from the imposed weighting. The time localization is not directly translated and spurious signals and noise can be generated. We discuss this problem and suggest a new inverse S-transform which may come helpful to many applications to take more advantage of the time-frequency localization.","PeriodicalId":238993,"journal":{"name":"ISPA 2005. We consider a set of segmentation agents organized around a coordinator agent. Each segmentation agent performs iterated conditional modes (ICM) starting from its own initial image created using a chaotic mapping. The coordinator agent diversifies the initial images using a crossover and a chaotic mutation operators. The efficiency of our chaotic MAS approach is shown through some experimental results.","PeriodicalId":238993,"journal":{"name":"ISPA 2005. A special attention is paid to method based on mutual information known from information theory. For experiments a set of 16 different homogeneous texture images from Brodatz album was selected. Texture features obtained based on mutual information technique was compared to those estimated using two techniques: Fisher coefficient and combined probability of classification error with average feature correlation respectively. Performed experiments shown advantage of features selected using mutual information based approach on texture classification. For additional evaluation of feature selection methods unexampled coefficient, based on classification results for every 1, 2, and 3 feature subsets is proposed. Based on this coefficient it is demonstrated that mutual information value indicates which feature is statistically better for classification. It is also possible to determine the optimal number of histogram bins for discretization of feature values.","PeriodicalId":238993,"journal":{"name":"ISPA 2005. While most image and video recognition systems discriminate identities using pixel-based information, our approach exploits the head dynamics; in particular the displacement signals of few head features. Due to the lack of standard video database, identification and verification scores have been obtained using a small collection of video sequences. The results for this preliminary approach are nevertheless encouraging.","PeriodicalId":238993,"journal":{"name":"ISPA 2005. The proposed algorithm combines both sequential Monte Carlo (particle filter - PF) and local search methods to achieve an accurate real-time hand tracking. The system allows to control different mouse actions through a reduced set of hand movements and gestures. Hand are segmented using a skin-color model based on explicit RGB region definition. The proposed hybrid tracking method increases the performance of general particle filter. It also improves the quality of the hand tracking task (the standard deviation between hand spatial positions for LSPF is reduced a 75% with respect to the PF algorithm). More precisely, a local search enhances a hand-simulated mouse cursor to smoothly move and thus recognize gestures for performing their associate actions.","PeriodicalId":238993,"journal":{"name":"ISPA 2005. This work presents a new methodology and software developed for this task, its main features are the visualization and quantification of the motion and deformation of the myocardial wall along the cardiac cycle, using sequences of ultrasound or magnetic resonance images. The software measures displacement of the different sections of the cardiac wall, and calculates velocity, strain and strain rate, in their radial and longitudinal or circumferential components. These parameters can also be displayed as a parametric image in color superposed to the original one. To evaluate the software and method, a clinical trial has been carried out on 12 sequences of healthy subjects and 12 sequences of patients, showing that this application could be a useful tool for the diagnosis of cardiac ischemic disease.","PeriodicalId":238993,"journal":{"name":"ISPA 2005. The proposed approach is applicable to nonlinear and non-Gaussian models for the target dynamics and measurement likelihood, where the environment is characterised by high clutter rate and low detection probability. The number of targets is estimated by continuously monitoring the events being represented by the regions of interest (ROIs) in the surveillance region. It follows that the proposed approach utilises the sequential importance sampling filter for recursive target state estimation, in conjunction with a 2-D data assignment method for measurement-to-target association. Computer simulations are also included to demonstrate and evaluate the performance of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":238993,"journal":{"name":"ISPA 2005.
