With the use of a hand-held, portable ultrasonic device a user may have the ability to quantitatively assess the progression of fingernail properties on-the-spot and over the long term. This device would be applicable to both clinical and cosmetic applications alike. Its application in the medical field to chemotherapy patients in a pilot study is also introduced. No device is currently on the market to quantitatively investigate the properties of fingernails hence this would be the first of its kind. This paper outlines the hardware, software and applications of the ultrasonic probe prototype for use by certified professionals or by the general public.","PeriodicalId":238720,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 30th Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (CCECE)","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126228219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The developed system is part of a low-cost wireless sensors network node. This work demonstrates the study, development, and troubleshooting of battery-assisted sensing platform compliant to the RFID standard electronic product code Gen-2. Two main scenarios are tested to connect the sensors; passive and semi-passive tags. The two architectures allow collecting data based on either the RFID reader command or a signal processing program to save the sensing data using the integrated circuit memory. Temperature and pressure measurements are performed based on the integrated and external sensors combined in the RFID circuit board. Besides the fully integrated temperature sensor with a sensing precision of 0.5 C over the target temperature range, external pressure sensor is connected to provide a flexible way for additional sensors interfacing. Sensor are connected to a single system as the design is intended for a reconfigurable self-calibrated multi-sensing platform. The proposed sensing tags are fully verified through measurements.","PeriodicalId":238720,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 30th Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (CCECE)","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129371841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The OFDM PAPR problem is addressed and investigated using SLM reduction technique. Next, an OFDM system with a multi-h CPFSK mapper is considered and its performance is evaluated in terms of the upper and lower bounds on bit error rate probability, and a closed form expression is obtained. Also, the system performance is examined over Rayleigh and Nakagami-m fading channels. The simulation and analytical results show that the performance of the system is superior than the OFDM system with BPSK and single-h CPFSK mappers.","PeriodicalId":238720,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 30th Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (CCECE)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124519151","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, it is crucial point for utilities to outline the requirements of the communication methods and to find the best communication infrastructure to handle the remotely located converters in a reliable and cost effective manner throughout the operation. The purpose of this study is to come up with a low cost wireless communication solution for remote controlled converters. Focusing on low cost, this letter studies about three communication methods which can be applicable to control the remote converters. All three methods are being tested to find out the suitability for data communication. Then this paper provides a comparison of all three methods with cost, measured range and the data rate. And conclude that LoRa is the solution with the highest potential for this application from the compared methods.","PeriodicalId":238720,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 30th Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (CCECE)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121857166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Capability to predict age/development stage of a plant is one of the important factors for plant phenotyping and for analysis of in-situ crops. With the developed technique, these algorithms can predict age of an Arabidopsis plant based on the given images and mutant types. Publicly available dataset containing 165 images at different development stages and with various mutant types was used for this experiment. Results show that with this technique and different regression algorithms, it can achieve 92% prediction accuracy. Comparatively, linear regression algorithms show greater prediction accuracy than nonlinear algorithms. This method of age prediction can help plant scientists and breeders for better analysis of crops.","PeriodicalId":238720,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 30th Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (CCECE)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126728113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed fault detection, isolation and estimations filters are directly constructed by using only the system I/O data at each operating point of the engine. The associated system Markov parameters are estimated by using the frequency response data that are then used for the direct construction of the fault detection, isolation and estimation filters. Our proposed scheme therefore does not require a priori knowledge of the system linear model or its number of poles and zeros at each operating point. We have shown through simulations that desirable fault detection, isolation and estimation performance metrics can be achieved.","PeriodicalId":238720,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 30th Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (CCECE)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127705450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) are used for the acoustical analysis of the audio files. The following steganalyzers are assessed: Support Vector Machines (SVMs), Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs), Deep Belief Networks (DBNs) and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs). These steganalysis methods are tested on three different steganographic approaches. Our experiments were carried out by using three steganographic techniques, namely, StegHide, Hide4PGP and FreqSteg that were applied to the Noizeus corpus. The results showed that the GMMs-based technique performed the best by reaching a perfect classification rate, without any error, followed by the SVMs, DBNs and RNNs.","PeriodicalId":238720,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 30th Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (CCECE)","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127014608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
