The focus was placed on the iron intermediates as well as the conditions under which condensed phases of iron or iron- species could be expected in a flame. For this purpose, equilibrium calculations were carried out for iron seeded hydro- gen/oxygen/argon and propene/oxygen/argon gas mixtures at combustion relevant conditions. Varying stoichiometries over a wide range of temperatures and pressures were investigated. The results allow a prognosis which gas phase iron species may be expected in measurable concentrations at given flame conditions, and also whether condensed phases of iron or iron species are likely. Also, the effect of sampling probes on the gas mixture composition due to flame cooling is discussed.","PeriodicalId":238681,"journal":{"name":"The Open Thermodynamics Journal","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133656722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We show that a correlation for cloud point, or wax apppearance temperature, obtained for pure-substance waxes may be extended to mixtures of hydrocarbons, thereby generalising the usefulness of the correlation. We apply the colligative equation for freezing point depression to quantify the analogous activity of wax inhibitors. The limits of applicability of an empirical formula that relates wax molecular weight and wax density are examined. We extend the analysis to the high molecular weight asphaltenes.","PeriodicalId":238681,"journal":{"name":"The Open Thermodynamics Journal","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126134590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A viscosity model has been developed based on the similarity between PVT and TμP relationship. The viscosity model can also describe the relation of the saturated vapor pressure with temperature. A modified Rijke tube with segments having different sections is found to have lower threshold levels of heat addition rate needed for exciting the fundamental acoustic mode of the tube. Experiments indicate that about 115 W of heating power is required to produce sound in the 90-cm-long segmented tube, while over 230 W is needed in 60-cm-long and 90-cm-long tubes with constant-area cross sections. One of the causes for lowering the threshold of heat addition rate is due to a significant reduction of the resonator natural frequency. The presented results suggest an impor- tance of including the system geometry details into analysis of practical devices prone to thermoacoustic instabilities.","PeriodicalId":238681,"journal":{"name":"The Open Thermodynamics Journal","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116054987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

[2]. This is concerned with gas hydrates, and in the relatively short time since its submission to OTJ I have myself undertaken some work on the thermodynamics of natural gas hydrates [2-5]. These are of course gas hydrates with methane as the ‘guest molecule’. The authors of [1] emphasise that phase equilibrium exists in the hydrates upon which they perform their measurements. It means that the guest molecules in the hydrates and the same chemical species in gaseous form contacting the hydrate are in phase equilibrium. I have been concerned in my own work with whether under such circumstances the system can be treated as a single component one, in which case the ice has the role of a passive container.","PeriodicalId":238681,"journal":{"name":"The Open Thermodynamics Journal","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115618476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These calculations are made by means of an intermo- lecular potential of the Lennard-Jones type (12, 6), slightly modified by using a Jagla linear ramp in the repulsive part of the potential. For the Helium we find a Ti in agreement with both previous calculations published by other authors and with experimental results. For Ne and Ar our results are also within the interval of values previously reported, and for Kr we also obtain a very high inversion temperature as some other authors. However, for H2 we find a Ti approximately twice to big than its estimated experimental value. This last calculation is corrected if we use a short ranged Lennard-Jones potential of the type (24, 12), obtaining a result in good agreement with the recognized experimental value.","PeriodicalId":238681,"journal":{"name":"The Open Thermodynamics Journal","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125950937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eng. Sci., vol. 55, pp. 1981-1999, June 2000). In the present study, isothermal phase equilibrium (pressure - composition) relations for the methane + ethane mixed-gas hydrate system were measured accurately at 279.1 K - 288.1 K. In addition, the equilibrium composition in the mixed-gas hydrate phase was investigated by mass and volume balances analysis. At all temperature conditions, the equilibrium curves exhibit discontinuity around given equilibrium compositions (water free), which supports that the structural phase transition occurs. The pressure of structural transition point increases as temperature rises, and the mole fractions of both hydrate phases at the structural transition point are almost independent of temperature.","PeriodicalId":238681,"journal":{"name":"The Open Thermodynamics Journal","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121730369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
