Three test methods were applied: the agar diffusion test, the dilution test and the suspension test. As was to be expected the antibacterial effect of the zinc chloride solution was dependent on concentration. Both root planing methods gave rise to a scalloped surface of the root cement. The ultrasonic root planing however showed a more discrete scalloped surface with very small tears and having a hammered appearance. {"title":"[The microbial colonization of the dentin close to the pulp in the permanent teeth following deep caries therapy].","authors":"S Kneist, R Heinrich, W Künzel","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>In a clinical microbiological study the microflora of cavity floors in 41 permanent teeth was investigated after several month of caries excavation and with or without Calxyl application on hard dentine prior sealing with zincphosphatecementum and amalgam. The cavity floors were only lowly infected. Actinomycetes or acidogenic and aciduric streptococci and lactobacilli dominated in the CFU. After application of Calxyl actinomycetes (A. israelii) were found 3-fold more frequently in the remaining population than streptococci (S. mutans) and lactobacilli. Without application of Calxyl their ratio was 1:1. {"title":"[The clinical significance of bacteremia following tooth extraction].","authors":"V Pávek, Z Broukal","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>A group of 61 patients underwent conservative and surgical dental treatment in general anesthesia and their blood was sampled for bacteremia before and after treatment. The antibiotic antibacterial prophylaxis was administered in 21 patients one hr. before treatment (both in conservatively and surgically treated patients). Immediately after the treatment the prevalence of bacteremia amounted to 80% in a group of ATB-free patients. The anaerobic-aerobic mixed flora with predominance of anaerobes verified in the microbiotopes \"sulcus/gingival pocket\", \"socket\" and \"extraction wound 2 days after extraction\" was identically. The flora of the root canal was distinguished by a smaller amount of microbes with predominance of aerobes. {"title":"[The determination of the optimal individual position of the mandibular anterior teeth].","authors":"D Segner","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Determining the individually optimal position of the lower incisors is one of the important factors in diagnosis and treatment planning. The study compares the accuracy of a number of methods postulated by different authors. It clearly shows that regression models display the highest accuracy in predicting the optimal incisor position. The most important variables in the prognosis are ANB angle and the prominence of the chin as measured by the distance of pogonion to NB line.
