The capacities of the buffers influence the throughput, by altering the waiting times for tasks that need to read or write data from or to the buffers. The buffers are realized using memory. To minimize the memory usage, we look for algorithms to compute the minimal capacity requirements for buffers to execute an application under a given throughput constraint. Synchronous dataflow (SDF) is a common formalism used to model applications in such algorithms. SDF however, is not suitable to describe today's dynamic applications, as it cannot express task variations. Finite-State-Machine Scenario-Aware Dataflow (FSM-SADF) is an extension of SDF that allows for not only task variations, but also structural variations, making it suitable for a wide range of dynamic applications. This paper provides the first throughput-bufering trade-of analysis for FSM-SADF models. The analysis provides the Pareto space of throughput and storage space trade-offs. The trade-off analysis is done by a guided Design Space Exploration (DSE) that cuts-off the exploration on non-critical buffers. The core of such a DSE is an FSM-SADF throughput analysis that, given the capacity of every buffer, obtains the throughput, as well as the critical buffers. We demonstrate the feasibility of our analysis with a number of examples.","PeriodicalId":236964,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 26th International Conference on Real-Time Networks and Systems","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114916873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such a situation is forecasted for next generation avionics networks, in order to better use communication resources. Indeed, the present situation, where the Avionics Full Duplex switched Ethernet (AFDX) network is reserved for critical avionics flows, leads to a very lightly loaded network. Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms such as service disciplines are mandatory in order to cope with the heterogeneous constraints of the different kinds of flows. Weighted Round Robin (WRR) is envisioned in the context of avionics. Worst-case traversal time (WCTT) analysis is mandatory to ensure that temporal constraints of flows are met. Network Calculus (NC) is a popular solution for this analysis and results exist for WRR. They lead to pessimistic upper bounds. The main contribution of this paper is to show how existing NC results for WRR can be applied and improved in the context of an avionics configuration. The resulting analysis is evaluated on an industrial size configuration.","PeriodicalId":236964,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 26th International Conference on Real-Time Networks and Systems","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124633403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to certification and safety issues, time-predictability - in the sense that the timing behavior must be analysable and validable off-line - is a mandatory feature. We present a complete framework, from high-level system specification in synchronous languages, to implementation on a multi-core hardware platform, which enforces time-predictability at every step of the development process. The framework is based on automated code generation tools to speed-up the development process and to eliminate error-prone human-made translation steps.","PeriodicalId":236964,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 26th International Conference on Real-Time Networks and Systems","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125578491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, there is a renewed interest to establish server based scheduling as a mainstream scheduling paradigm in automotive software development and to that end, we provide a response time analysis that provides tighter bounds than the existing state-of-the-art approaches for a system containing deferrable and periodic servers. Our proposed approach can also analyze periodic tasks with offsets and tasks with backlogged activations. We further perform experiments on LITMUSRT in order to demonstrate the tightness of the proposed response time analysis.","PeriodicalId":236964,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 26th International Conference on Real-Time Networks and Systems","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130966969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, interference and noise can cause delays and packet losses that can degrade control system performance, which leads us to find the optimal network configuration to minimize that impact. Another problem of wireless networks for control systems is caused by time-varying fault patterns, which motivates us to do network reconfiguration at runtime. We focus on the online wireless network reconfiguration in an embedded networked and cyber-physical system (CPS), with four main contributions: (1) the design and implementation of a novel network reconfiguration framework with offline and online components that consider time-correlated link failures; (2) a network imperfection model; (3) six online reconfiguration algorithms for wireless control system; (4) a case study with 12 hops and up to 50 nodes that controls a nonlinear small modular nuclear reactor. Our network imperfection model is accurate (with 0.993 Pearson correlation) and our online reconfiguration algorithms have smaller error and longer network lifetime than a state-of-the-art static scheme.","PeriodicalId":236964,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 26th International Conference on Real-Time Networks and Systems","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131015520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We derive bounds on central timing parameters relating the execution demands of tasks to the available budgets which, if satisfied by the tasks, allows us to establish probably approximately correct (PAC) bounds that quantify the long-term evolution of quality of execution. Such large-deviation bounds furnish proof that tasks achieve their desired QoS levels at an exponentially-decaying rate, and, once attained, these levels are sustained and guaranteed for the entire (possibly indefinite) operation horizon, in spite of random fluctuations in budget availability. We study the case when task execution requirements and/or available budgets are dependent, and we derive sufficient conditions under which non-trivial system-wide PAC-type quality guarantees exist under limited dependence. We do so through a novel application of the Lovász Local Lemma. We also present a use-case involving an application of our bounds to safety-critical systems, where the goal is to synthesize runtime monitors and their timing characteristics under a rather general isochronous execution model on multiple processors. We show how to compute monitor worst-case execution times so that tasks attain given QoS levels and also meet their hard deadlines. We treat the related scheduling and feasibility questions, and we show how to derive feasible isochronous Dp-Fair schedules, if they exist, in polynomial-time.","PeriodicalId":236964,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 26th International Conference on Real-Time Networks and Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128488418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When dealing with a wireless low-power network in which the network traffic alternates between no traffic and high traffic a compromise must be accepted. Using a low power protocol may not guarantee the performance needed when the traffic increases above a given threshold; using a high-performance protocol may waste precious energy when the traffic in the network is very low. This paper presents WiseTOP, a multimode MAC protocol, which adapts to strongly varying network traffic conditions. Although, WiseTOP has been initially designed for an arm prosthesis, this approach is relevant in other scenarios, typically duty-cycled, such as sensor networking in cars, planes, drones, etc. In addition, WiseTOP aims at providing a good protection against 2.4GHz external interferences, by adopting a channel-hopping scheme. Our results show that switching from one protocol to the other decreases the energy consumption and increases the communication performance, measured as correctly delivered packets and latency.","PeriodicalId":236964,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 26th International Conference on Real-Time Networks and Systems","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123903983","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the WCET of tasks in a single core system can be upper bounded in isolation, the tasks in a manycore system are subject to shared memory interferences which impose high overestimation of the WCET bounds. However, manycore-based massively parallel applications will enter the area of real-time systems in the years ahead. Explicit message-passing and a clear separation of computation and communication facilitates WCET analysis for those programs. Thereby, the separation is especially ensured if applying collective communication. We propose a process of analysing state-of-the-art communication patterns with respect to worst case timing. As MPI is the standard for performing collective communication, we use it to show how to evaluate the timing behaviour in detail. We compare different communication patterns and show the tremendous impact of choosing an appropriate one.","PeriodicalId":236964,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 26th International Conference on Real-Time Networks and Systems","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116520369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we present an approach to create a contention-free communication schedule for a Network on Chip (NoC) using a global Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) schedule. TDMA can provide an isolation property among interfering tasks and a bandwidth guarantee for different communication paths. The approach allows the derivation of a predictable timing behavior for the communication. The communication schedule is designed using two scheduling strategies: a first-fit greedy strategy and a solver-based approach called rectangular allocation. In the experiments, the approaches are evaluated with synthetic communication task sets on a 2D-meshed NoC-topology.","PeriodicalId":236964,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 26th International Conference on Real-Time Networks and Systems","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122388976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
